A group of tourists from northern Sweden had an unpleasant start to their holiday in Turkey after a suspected case of food poisoning sent 17 to the hospital.

After landing shortly after 9pm in the Turkish resort town of Antalaya on Wednesday night, the group, which included residents from Luleå and Sundsvall, didn't even make it to their hotel before several starting feeling ill on the bus from the airport, the local Sundvalls Tidning reported.

According to relatives, panic and chaos erupted on the bus, forcing the driver to pull over and call an ambulance.

Speaking with the Aftonbladet newspaper, Isabell Lindholm told of how her boyfriend Alexander Nyström began throwing up as soon as the bus started moving.

"I had to run around the bus collecting barf bags," she told the newspaper.

"There were a lot of people vomiting on the bus. But Alexander vomited the most. He had a bag full of puke."

Seventeen people from the group of 188 travelers were taken to hospital, while two others were also ill but didn't need require hospitalisation.

The food served on the chartered plane, which was operated by Sun Express on behalf of Swedish tour operator Ving, is thought to be the likely cause of the outbreak.

"We think that the airplane food caused this. We've already taken the chicken off the menu and Sun Express has started lab tests," Ving spokesperson Magdalena Öhrn told Sundsvalls Tidning.

Is there such a thing as good airplane food?

Bad PR for Sun Express, which is not a major airline in Turkey. Its just a bad idea to eat stuff like chicken or fish on a budget airline flight anyway.

"Is there such a thing as good airplane food? "

Actually there is. Ironically, its offered by Turkish Airlines.

I agree with Swedesmith. I have basically ceased eating on airplanes. Even on an 8 hour haul. We can only hope that all airlines keep an ample supply of barf bags on hand. Even SAS does not provide gourmet dining any more. Instead I try to relax and enjoy the howls of screaming children. At least you can say no to airplane food. But how do you say now to shrieking infants? Short of killing them? Or their parents? That's a much greater problem than poisonous, chemical, artificial chicken?
