UK bail conditions 'dehumanising': Assange

Published: 16 Jun 11 21:01 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/34400/20110616/

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange clocked up six months on bail Thursday, with the whistleblowing website slamming his "unfair" restrictions as he fights extradition from Britain.

The 39-year-old, who is living at a friend's mansion in eastern England, must wear an electronic ankle tag and observe a curfew as he appeals against his extradition to Sweden to face rape and sexual assault allegations.

In a statement released to some media including The Daily Telegraph newspaper, WikiLeaks bemoaned Assange's position.

"He has not been charged with a crime in any country. The conditions of his detention are excessive and dehumanising," the organisation said.

"Whilst fighting this battle, and trying to continue with his important work for freedom of information, he is being forced to remain in unfair and undignified conditions."

Assange maintains that the claims against him by two women he met during a seminar in Sweden last August are politically motivated because of his work.

The Australian former computer hacker rocked the diplomatic world and infuriated Washington last year when his website began releasing hundreds of thousands of secret US State Department and military documents.

WikiLeaks began publishing around 250,000 cables in which US diplomats give their often candid views on world leaders, to Washington's acute embarrassment.

He was detained in London under the European arrest system in December.

Assange has claimed his greatest fear is eventual extradition to the United States, where his lawyers argued he could be sent to the Guantanamo Bay detention facility or face the death penalty.

"The allegations as they are made do not amount to crimes in the UK. If he were to go to Sweden he would be kept in detention indefinitely and incommunicado," WikiLeaks said in the statement.

"If charged, he will be subjected to a trial held in secret. He will not be allowed to see all the evidence against him.

"Outside observers will not be able to scrutinise the merits of the case."

"The Swedish government has refused to state that it will not hand over Mr Assange to the United States. This is why he is fighting this disproportionate and unfair extradition order."

His appeal hearing at the High Court in London will take place on July 12-13.

Having to stay in a friends mansion...must be awful...just like guantanamo bay..

He is surely welcome to travel back to Sweden if he is not happy.

Personally i think the charges should be dropped but he must realise that he is considered a flight risk so bail conditions are normal until the trial

If he were smart (he seems to think he is the smartest guy on the planet) he would just be quiet and not give "the system" more motivation to rattle his cage. The Squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Okay... what? @repeataftermenow that makes no sense. Does it make sense that Assange is the CIA?

I believe that there are conspiracies against Assange. I believe that these accusations made against him by these women are deeper than what they seem to be. I believe it's the Government trying to get back at him any way they can, because they can't assassinate him. If they do, everyone will know it's the Government.

But anyway, you're absolutely ridiculous. You sound like one of those conspiracy theorists who don't know what they're talking about and who can't think with logic.

Julian Who?

And the Aussies call us whingeing Poms ... seems like the shoe is on the other foot!

Three speed cameras were installed last month by the British government on the tiny lane that leads into the country estate where Assange is held under house arrest.

This is perfectly normal. In England speed cameras are always erected outside the homes of everyone held under house arrest to control the traffic, and record who might be coming and going. Nothing strange here!

A lot of people would love to be forced to live in a mansion with no bills.

If he is so hard done by he should move to Sweden or the USA.

can you imagine he has spent six months on just extradition case.he could have been in Sweden on his will and face trial to prove his innocence.there is a smelling fish somewhere.assange is hiding something somewhere.his lawyers should have been preparing for the main case (rape charge)other than extradition.this is ridiculous. everyone is blaming the government but this guy tried to bring down same government.all those files released we know the contents, has it made the world better? i do not think so !!

Liberate this narcissistic poser from his shackles. History stands witness to characters reflected by the likes of Jullian Assange--left to his own devices, he will self-destruct. Most recent example of this natural process is U-S Congressman Anthony Weiner.

There is a massive difference between Weiner's weener being sexted to a phone and the release of "secret" documents.....Get real.....

@Farnoxo you are right about the Aussies taking over the status of whiners but I don't think that Julian Assange fits into this category. Think about his position. Under house arrest while Sweden battles with demons in regards about what constitutes rape. Personal politics gone too far and an insult to people who have been raped.

Those who believe that Assange is no body must be living in a box. Assange has created a computer program that helps the Victoria Police Australia catch pedophiles. He assisted the UN in developing a computer program to protect the identity and personal details of refugees. Wikileaks will be, if it is allowed to develop, the best safe guard against corrupt actions of governments and corporations. Do people remember the circumstances surrounding the lead up to the Iraq War? All that money. All those deaths.

There are millions who support Wikileaks and who are dumbfounded by Sweden's involvement in Julian Assange's current situation. More people aren't expressing their points of view about it because they know that secret services are monitoring people. Säpo you can earmark me as a supporter. I never thought that a mechanism that could effectively achieve organisational transparency would occur in my life time. Thank you Julian Assange.

However even with my solid support, I don't care if Julian gets his arse kicked. Make him take an Aids test. Taint his name in the media. But if he is extradited he will sits in detention for over six months to have his case heard. It will be judged by people with out legal backgrounds. The case will be heard in camera allowing emotions and not legal doctrine to dominate the proceeding. Given how this case is reported in the Swedish media I don't blame him for avoiding the Swedish courts. Can we have some proportionality? Please!
17:58 June 17, 2011 by zoroastrina
Kenny W's request for proportionality falls on deaf ears in the impenetrable and briary undergrowth of the Swedish legal system which, like many another legal regime, is in in urgent need of reform. Perhaps Säpo does good work in attempting to protect Swedish industrial secrets and other necessarily classified infromation and in weeding out foreign agents who spy on and attempt to intimidate immigrants, but Säpo by its nature must contain big-brother elements. I do, however, want Julian assange to be exonerated and allowed to continue to expose the bastardization of diplomacy, political corruption and the total lack of transparency by an often politically corrupt and venal elite.
20:30 June 17, 2011 by zryder
If Julian Assage had actually committed a crime he should be charged for it and taken to the Hague where he could get an honest and fair trial. It is common knowledge that the "Swedish Way" is blackmail and extortion and impossible for me to believe the allegations of two Swedish women. If anyone needs to be on trial in Sweden it should be the corrupt judges and the entire antiquated Swedish kangaroo court system of justice which should be relegated to the trash bin and replaced with Common Law.

He should come over to sweden if he feels the mansion is not comfortable. We will get a better accommodation for him in one of our prisons. I heard of people becoming more robust when they visit the prisons in Sweden

Yo Prince T, Get a clue, your opinion only further exemplifies the prejudicial nature and discrimination of a corrupt system that needs to disappear and join the dinosaurs.
