'At least 15 countries' spying on Sweden: report

Published: 17 Jun 11 11:18 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/34416/20110617/

Over fifteen countries are systematically conducting intelligence operations against Sweden, in Sweden or against Swedish interests overseas, according to security service Säpo.

The intelligence gathering tends to be focused on the the illegal acquisition of information on Swedish politics, defense, economy, technology, science, or about refugees, according to security service Säpo's annual report for 2010, released on Thursday.

Agents from foreign states also attempted to influence Swedish policymakers, or tried to purchase Swedish businesses in order to gain information or technology.

At the same time, Säpo also ramped up efforts to prevent foreign agents from spying on refugees.

Last year Säpo investigated 800 people seeking asylum in Sweden for possible connections to efforts to spy on refugees already in the country, a figure up by 120 from the previous year.

The probes stopped several cases of refugee espionage, according to regional newspaper Sydsvenskan.

Säpo suspected that the people stopped wanted to enter Sweden to spy on countrymen who had previously been granted asylum.

In a number of cases, Säpo made sure the Migration Board (Migrationsverket) refrained from issuing visas to individuals the security service suspected of being foreign intelligence agents.

anybody can be a spy...doesnt matter where ur from

Not surprised in the least. With the amount of Muslims coming in and with the increase in bombings, there is bound to be added interest from countries that are worried. Along with the Muslims comes the threat of terror.

The First Law of Diplomacy is that everybody spies on everybody else.

The Second Law of Diplomacy is that nobody ever admits to spying.

The Third Law of Diplomacy is that diplomats are responsible for covering up the spying.

The second and third laws require all diplomats to be accomplished liars as well as spies.

I rejoice over the work of Säkerhetspolisen. They are responsible for protecting state secrets and the rights of Swedish citizens and immigrants. tadchem's comment says everything.

Here is a policy suggestion for the Swedish government. Reverse wholesale the immigration policies of having borders open like a sieve to masses of Muslim refugees.

Then you won't have as much consternation from foreign governments with respect to possible breeding grounds for Muslim terrorists and sleeper cells, etc. in Sweden.

I am being serious. If the intelligence community is this singularly focused on Sweden, it is axiomatic that there is a reason for it.

Why couldn't we have the list of these 15 countries included in the story? I have my own suspicions, but would rather not start the rumor mill. One of them is definitely Iran though. Wonder if Norway, Luxemburg, St Kitts, or Kyrghystan are included?
21:54 June 17, 2011 by cupidcub
@philster61:

Man.. its really funny when you say that any Muslim is a terrorist.. which actually means 23% of the world population are terrorist.. lol

I really don't understand why should a learned person like you would get crazy listening whatever the western media says instead of using your your brain.

How many Muslims have you found harmful, personally ? I believe none.

From the picture associated with this article it should be fairly easy to catch the spies ... because, apparently, all the spies in Sweden use binoculars to steal their information.
22:15 June 17, 2011 by wakak
Is it possible to know what they are spying for? The recipe of fika, perhaps?
23:58 June 17, 2011 by belardo
i think Swedes should feel flattered! Yes! These spies want to know how things are done in Sweden so they can implement it in their own countries. They are learning from the best, and Sweden one of those countries.

This article reminds me of the Russian spies captured in the states. They were not spying for military stuff, rather social, and business matters.

And for those who claimed these spies come from muslim countries better get a reality check. There is no where in the article mentions the origin of these spies and their intentions.

Oh ohhhhhh here we again with some hatred comments against religion.

guyz whats the idea behind you guyz blaming the entire Muslim's ? seems you guyz are stagnated in a brain cell which doesn't develop any further, similarly i just want to ask you guys. is there any word in the dictionary as "Christian terrorists" ? if u do not know about the history.....Eg how many people did "Hitler" killed ? and how do you rate him ?

i guess you guyz do not prefer "peace" because you "saw the hatred seeds" publicly and force automatic recruits against you.but still i do not blame your religion even though you are a small sprat.

May be sweden is giving assylum to the most wanted from the mentioned countries, the truth is its only here where you come and claim unsafe and you get residence. The migrationverket needs to expertise its information source network to really understand the kind of people they let into this country in the name of refugees and assylum seekers

.......hey belardo , .. get this from a top international lawler ,,,,,, " the empirically designed , legal system in sweden is built upon , an administrive authoritative tradtion , FAR BELOW the level of scientifically based requirments for modernn society ........ seems a long way from the best , more like a banana republic !!!! ,,,

You would think that as they all belong to the same club they could cut back the numbers and share the information!

yes anyone who speaks out against the fascist papacy system and its subsidiaries is a terrorist so that means if you are a real Christian or a Muslim then you are a terrorist technically (as soon as you open your mouth, you are a hate speech terrorist) because your culture is "wrong".

It is safer to be a murderer as you only get a few years in the crown hotel.
