Injured Swede in fatal attack in Spain ‘lucky’

An 18-year-old Swedish woman who survived a knife attack in which her friend was killed in Malaga, Spain Friday night is lucky to be alive, doctors have said.

The injured Swede, who had been stabbed at her hotel in Figuerola del Camp and taken to a nearby hospital, was treated for cuts on her hands and neck.

She was released from the hospital Saturday and taken to the local police station, according to Spanish authorities.

“The doctor told her that she had been very lucky because she had an injury to her neck that could have been fatal,” a source close to the investigation told local newspaper El Pais.

Her friend was murdered during the attack.

Police arrested a 30-year-old North African man with a resident permit in Spain, confirmed a spokesperson for the Spanish authorities to the TT news agency.

The murder took place between 3:30 and 3:50am at the hotel El Cid, when the suspected killer, also a guest at the hotel, broke into the girls’ room with the intent to rape them, reported the TT.

A fight then broke out.

A series of screams alarmed both the receptionist and a Spanish police officer, who was also vacationing at the hotel.

Both fled to the fifth floor to intervene.

Investigators believe the suspect attempted to rape them, and failing his mission, attacked with a kitchen knife.

The young women, both 18-years-old, were on vacation, celebrating their recent graduation.

They had arrived in the resort area of Malaga three days ago and were staying at the hotel El Cid, located in the heart of town, reported El Pais.

According to the owner of the hotel, the primary suspect arrived at the hotel earlier Friday and met the girls at a discothèque that night. The girls returned to their room at 2:30am, he added.

The surviving victim and the assailant were both treated for cuts sustained during the attack.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed the information about the deceased.

UD spokesperson, Cecilia Julin, said the victims are both from central Sweden, but not the same cities.

Relatives of the two young women have been informed of the incident.

Investigators are now working to clarify the manner in which the suspect, who remains in custody, entered the womens’ room. Authorities have no information if the man has been previously convicted of violent crimes.

Local police now have 72 hours to formally charge the main suspect.

wow, i hope the deceased rest in peace and her friend recovers quickly. our world has become so crazy that kids can't even go out by themselves and have a good time just because some idiot can't keep his pervation on a leash.

I don't know how one can ever recover from an experience like that. What a way to start off your adult life. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims family and the survivor. It is indeed a troublesome world that we live in.

I hope the deceased rest in peace.

Just wondering, in such a case, if this had been Sweden, I believe the victim is not allowed to fight back, otherwise he or she will be charged for fighting in return.

So how to handle such a scenario other than running away (which is not possible choice in many such cases)???

Sad news. Girls should practice some self defense skills such as Brazilian Jiujitsu or Sambo. Both martial arts stress using skills rather than strength for smaller, weaker persons to defend against bigger, stronger assailants. Fortunately, but sadly in this case, most swedes are used to live in a peaceful and safe environment. So they are not prepared for such situation. But of course you should always try to run away first, fighting is the last choice in any case.

I hope the deceased rest in peace.

even something as simple as pepper spray would help women to defend themselves from an assailant. What a shame that is illegal here as well...
15:26 June 19, 2011 by Valdemaratterdag
@muscle

If you're not able to run away, you fight back regardless of the law and consequences. Even if things turn against you in a court of law, you do have a fundamental human right to defend yourself.

@irridium

Who cares if pepper spray is illegal? I know women who carry it anyway. Your first duty is to protect yourself in all cases, not worry about whether you're breaking the law when you're in an unsafe place or about to be attacked. I would rather that a wife, girlfriend, mother or daughter were safely in jail and NOT have been raped, beaten or killed because they refused to follow the letter of the stupid law against arming yourself against attackers.

Swedish jails are country clubs. I will visit my wife in jail for using pepper spray and be thankful that she didn't end up on the pages of the local as another crime statistic.

Self-defense is legal in Sweden.

@Valdemaratterdag, no worries, of course my wife carries some, just a shame it is not readily for sale here. I heard wasp spray works well and that can be purchased anywhere.

Every Man has an obligation as a Man to defend the weak. Part of that is teaching the Women and Children in his life to defend themselves, when attacked, because you can not always be there.

Cranberries is right, I would go with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as it uses leverage and skill and being able to defend yourself from your back makes it very useful.

We are blessed in the US that our Women can carry firearms, which are a great equalizer for the weaker and less violent people in society.

May God be with the young victim and the Spanish Police in prosecuting the attacker.
23:12 June 19, 2011 by Corvinus
Well, the firearms are a blessing as well as a curse. With the higher firearm saturation that would involve the chances are this scumbag would have had a handgun instead of a kitchen knife and the body-count may well have been higher.
23:26 June 19, 2011 by wenddiver
@Corvinus- A valid point, since guns are a more efficient weapon system. They are also noisier and alert police, on the good side. I would bet by Sister is probably a faster draw and more likely to draw first than your average criminal.

I would say say five minutes drawing practice a day would be sufficient to beat most criminals. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be taken anywhere even Jail.

its in cases like this that i have no problems with death penalty...

what kind a screwed up ignorant s*hit head does that.. whats the point, grrr
02:12 June 20, 2011 by wenddiver
I don't know if "lucky" is how I would describe somebody a criminal tried to rape and murder on vacation.
08:17 June 20, 2011 by irridium
I practiced Brazilian jiu jitsu for some years. It is great for one on one, but if there are multiple assailants or a weapon is used, you will lose. Pepper spray should be easily accessible in Sweden,
10:03 June 20, 2011 by Puffin
errr ....... so how would carrying pepper spray in SWEDEN stop you from getting attacked IN SPAIN

Come on folks read the article before trotting out the standard comments ;-)

Pepper spray and mace etc are classified as firearms and if caught you will be prosecuted for firearms offences - however hairspray and deoderants are not classified in this way

However I think that carrying these things are mostly a placebo - they may make you feel better - but give you very little help if you are actually attacked

1) as you would not get the time to open your handbag if you are attacked for real

2) the vast majority of attacks are not by strangers but by people you know when you are not on your guard

Women need to be taught to improvise more. The last time I was in Lebanon I defended myself with a piece of rebar. There is always a weapon hearby, you just have to recognize it.
