Christian Democrats uphold sex change sterilization demand

The Christian Democrats on Thursday voted to retain the demand for sterilization for those choosing to undergo a sex change, arguing that if "a woman becomes a man, she should not be able to become pregnant as a woman".

At the party conference on Thursday in Umeå in the north of Sweden, the party rejected an earlier suggestion from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) to remove the sterilization requirement.

“A sex-change means that you willingly subject yourself to treatment in order to change your gender, and if you do that it is also reasonable that you give up some gender-specific properties of your old sex,” Maria Larsson, minister for children and the elderly, said in a speech at the party conference on Thursday evening.

Larsson also said that Sweden is by no means unique in implementing this rule and added that it is also a question of children having the right to “define who is their mother and who is their father”.

According to legislation passed in 1972, to undergo a sex change operation a person must be over 18-years-old, a Swedish citizen, be sterilized and unmarried.

This has long been defended by the Christian Democrats but lately critical voices have risen from within the rank and file that the position is old-fashioned, and on Thursday Larsson met criticism from party members.

“This is state-imposed surgery that is mandatory in a certain situation, a mutilating surgery, and you should have very strong reasons to force that on people,” said party member Olle Sandahl in a speech.

Another party member, Caroline Szyber, said that the Christian Democrats should safeguard the sanctity of all individuals and protect their rights.

“Many, myself included, will associate forced sterilisations with the policies of the post-war era. As long as it is state-sanctioned it is coercion,” said Szyber in her speech.

Between 1934 and 1976, when there was a change in legislation, it is estimated that 63,000 mentally disabled people, epileptics and people with alleged social problems, were coerced to undergo sterilization in Sweden against their will, or pressured into agreeing to the operation in order to be allowed to marry or be released from mental institutions.

In 1999, Sweden agreed to compensate some of the victims of forced sterilization, offering each individual up to 175,000 kronor ($28,000).

Larsson was not amused by the comparison to the state imposed sterilizations in Sweden's past.

“I feel slightly concerned when people compare this rule to the forced sterilizations from history - there is no comparison, let me be clear on that. This is about how someone willingly has chosen to change their sex,” Larsson said.

According to news agency TT, the government is divided on the issue. And at a party leader debate held during last year's Pride festival, prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said he was keen to modernize the law.

“It’s a dark chapter in Swedish history,” he told news agency TT at the time.

But Larsson told Sveriges Radio (SR) on Thursday that, as it is only this point they don’t see eye-to-eye on, she is confident that they will be able to reach an agreement.

The Christian Democrats did however vote in favour of scrapping the demand that a married person who chooses to have a sex change must get a divorce, and the requirement that you have to be a Swedish citizen to have the procedure done.

What is right today may tomorrow's wrong and vice verse. In past homosexuality was seen a social problem in the field of sociology (deviant behavior). Today homosexuality and transsexualism are perceived normal in the post industrial society. You can see in this article that the theme is on sterilization - not transsexualim. If judging others is also considered normal in Sweden I would simply say, this issue is still a social problem, in my simple perception.

If christians, muslims, or any other religious person wants to be sterilized after their sex change, they have every right to go that route.

Those who don't want to be sterilized after their sex change, have every right not to do so.

Problem solved.
14:43 July 1, 2011 by MarshaLynn
Qassim, there is nothing normal about homosexuality. Male homosexuals have been demonstrated by studies (one as recent as 2010 in San Francisco) to generally be hyper-promiscuous -- much more than heterosexuals -- many of them having 100s of sex partners in a lifetime. They are prone to both contagious disease (including AIDS, at which they are still No. 1) and other serious medical problems that often shorten their lifespans -- all of it due to their sexual practices. This cannot be considered normal by any reasonable standards. For society to celebrate this is totally irrational. Unfortunately their practices carry within them the seeds of their own destruction, which is very sad. And there is still no proof that homosexuals are "born that way" any more than any other alternative sexual practices are inborn. In the USA, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders because homosexual activists were staging protests outside their offices. They finally caved to political pressure. There was no scientific basis for making that decision. Totally political.

Sweden can be so off-the-charts incredibly absurd sometimes.

"Qassim, there is nothing normal about homosexuality."

There are over 1500 animal species that practice homosexuality, humans are just one of those animal species.

There is nothing abnormal about it.

Women who want to become men and then have babies are trying to have it both ways. Men can't become pregnant. That's a fact. So if a women becomes a man, why is "he" complaining that he can't give birth? If he wants to give birth, then "he" should remain a "she".

Most earth-human beings are inalienably gifted with free-will. It is anyone's/everyone's right to free-will choose what is their personal, unique desire, with regard to this issue. It is no one else's right to supersede that choice.
17:15 July 1, 2011 by Nemesis
This is a nonsense arguement which is easily dealt with.

If a person wishes to under go sex reasignment surgery they should be given the option of having gametes (sperm or ovum) frozen, before starting any hormone or surgical treatment. If there is a wish post sex reassignment surgery to have children, they can pay for someone to be artificially inseminated if they can find someone willing to do so.

As for someone deciding to get pregnant while in the process of changing from male to female, then that person is not a transsexual but is in fact a dual role transvestite, who has went way to far into there fantasy and should be excluded from transsexual treatment procedures. That type of person most likely has some form of narcistic problem, not transsexualism.

Regarding the sterilisation requirement. That is just a piece of bigotry held over from when Sweden was the Eugenics leader in Europe.

Sex reasignment surgery of a male to female transsexual automatically makes a person sterile due to surgical castration and penectomy, therefore requirement for sterilisation is unnecessarily vindictive.

Sex reasignment surgery of a female to male transsexual makes a person sterile due to removal or ovaries, uterus and vaginal canal, therefore requirement for sterilisation is unnecessarily vindictive.

The European Court of Justice defined a transsexual person in 1996 (PvS case) as a person intending to, undergoing or who has underwent sex resignment surgery, with an emphasis on the surgery. Under that ruling anyone not intending to have sex reasignment surgery performed on themself, is not transsexual. It was a very clear and concise ruling and applies to all European countries including Sweden.

The definition of someone who wears the clothes of the opposite sex but does not intend to have surgery is transvestite, regardless of wether the subject is male or female.

That should be simple enough for the most ignorant redneck to understand, including the Christian Democrats.

I dont agree that some 15000 animals spicies practice homosexualism. Apart from human others are induced. On the other hand i may be wrong, please enlighten me or is this another propanganda?
18:05 July 1, 2011 by Nemesis
@ prince T

Here is some informaiton on homosexuality in animals.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexual_animals

If you know any farmers they will be able to tell you about homosexual behaviour amongst goats, sheep, pigs, etc. A farmers worst nightmare if breeding thorough-bred cattle is a homosexual bull as they are worthless, instead of worth a fortune. They quickly end up in the freezer.

Also homosexuality is a completely seperate and distinct issue from transsexualism.

Those garbage communists talking about a 'person's right to chose' are missing the point that it is a child's biological right to be born from a female.

If the child were to consent at the age of 18 to be born from the womb of a man, then, we should accommodate that, unfortunately we cannot.

Moreover - it is NOT the 'right' of a person to have a state-sponsored sex change operation anyhow.

Any more than it is my right for the state to pay for my plastic surgery.
19:15 July 1, 2011 by Nemesis
@ jomamas,

In a lot of European states social health care pays for sex change surgery. Sex change surgery is not seen as elective, but a medical necessity in Europe.

In Europe it is normal that healcare is paid for by the state, which in turn pays for healthcare from taxes. Transsexual people pay tax as does all European citizens.

If you do not agree with socialised healthcare in Europe, then you have the option of booking a flight out of Europe and never returning.

if you wish to live in a country that does not pay for sex change surgery you have the option to move to any of the following countries, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Belorussia, Russia, Kazakistan, Uzbekestan, Iraq, Nigeria, Uganda, Somalia or USA.

So, it's guarnteed that they'll build me a penis, but there's no certainty that an amblulence will arrive should I need one?
23:21 July 1, 2011 by sweetjessica
I am totally confused by this. A sex change is not something that is undertaken casually - I can't really see any reason to restrict their right to reproduce simply for that. You'd be denying them one of the basic right of being human. Sterilizing them before a procedure, does not prevent them from freezing sperm or eggs beforehand and using a surrogate, so it seems kind of pointless.

But... last I heard, the technology simply wasn't there, anyway. Once you have a sex change, the sex organs are largely removed, not just sterilized. Transexual women do not have cervixes, wombs, eggs... nothing that can develop or give birth to child anyway - so why all the angst and anger over this?
00:14 July 2, 2011 by The Grand Master
Oh please let me pay more and more taxes so that these poor confused people can change sex and then decide they want to have babies after all. It's a farce, stop putting all these ridiculous procedures on the free health service. It's a lifestyle choice, an extreme one but still a choice. I want to pay for those who need genuine help, not this kind of nonsense.
07:11 July 2, 2011 by sweetjessica
Something else to consider... the current thinking on transexualism is that it is a genetic defect passed down through females. Females that are affected have difficulty providing the proper amounts of hormones at the proper times during fetal development - creating a transexual in the womb. So, sterilizing the transexual would be even more pointless than at first glance; you would have to sterilize the transexual's mother to affect any change in the population. The transexual themself is actually the victim in the whole thing; and there's no reason to believe they even have the gene that would cause it, if they bore children... you'd have to start testing heterosexual females, and sterilizing THEM.This whole idea really is stupid all the way around. Perhaps these democrat christians should all voluntarily sterilize themselves; statistically, a few of them may carry the gene. At the very least, the average IQ would go up a bit.
10:08 July 2, 2011 by ooh456
I don't think the Swedish government should pay for people's sex changes at all. They don't even pay for my dental work despite the fact they take 70% of my income in the form of various taxes (35% employment tax, 40% income tax and 25% sales tax). I think being homosexual is fine. Whatever floats your boat. I think having a sex change is a bad idea however. A human being cannot become the opposite sex any more than he can become a tiger or a monkey. All you are doing is giving yourself false hopes and mutilating yourself. I bet most people live to regret it. Accept yourself for who you are! Nature made you a certain sex for a reason.
10:39 July 2, 2011 by Nemesis
@ sweetjessica,

The sex change process leads to complete sterility, by surgical methods during the sex reasignment process.

The pregnant man in the USA is basically an attention seeking female transvestite looking for 15 minutes of fame, nothing else.

Also do you have a reference for your claim of genetic inheritance as a cause of transsexualism, from a peer reviewed journal from the mother? Please do not post anything from the archives of sexual behaviour magazine, as I do not recognise porn and bigotry as science. A peer reviewed journal such as Nature, would be appropiate.

@ The Grand Master,

Transsexualism is not a lifestyle choice. It is a recognised medical condition.

Being a bigot is a lifestyle choice and I for one, refuse to support your lifestyle choice of bigotry.

@ ooh456,

Is there any other minority you want to refuse appropiate medical treatment to such as muslims, jews, black people, disabled, etc?

Socialised medicine is for everyone in society, regardless of who or what they are. That is the principle that universal healthcare is built upon.

If you do not agree with the universal healthcare systems that we have for all citizens here in Europe, then you have the option of booking a flight out of Europe and never returning.

If you wish to live in a country that does not pay for sex reasignment surgery and refuses healthcare to other minorities, then you have the option to move to any of the following countries, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Belorussia, Russia, Kazakistan, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Uganda, Somalia or USA. I am sure you will find people of the same mindset as yourself, in any of those countries.

The real Christians, Jews and Muslims would not turn themselves into the opposite sex. This phenomenon is widely rampant in the growing number of atheist society - have you ever met a gay or a lesbian? After they tell you that he is a guy or she is a lesbian, they would most probably add, "We don't do God thing!" From a medical perspective 'homosexuality' is not healthy and so is 'transsexualism'.

Religous bigots might be described as widly rampant - just this small minority to get on with their own lives & problems, rather than adding to them.

Coming from a country that is so broke and so backward that it is about to turn the world on its head, I find this humorous. I love the fact that Sweden provides health care to all residents (practically) and that they pay for, what some would call, voluntary procedures, but why waste money sterilizing men and women who are scheduled for a gender reassignment procedure? As one comment previously stated, the candidate becomes sterile as a result of the procedure itself. Why spend the limited funds of the state on an obviously punitive procedure?

Honestly, how many people would become pregnant or impregnate someone during this transitional period in their lives? I believe it would be a very rare occurrence and that they would then become ineligible for the gender reassignment procedure. I know, some people (especially some NOT seeking gender reassignment) have no business reproducing, but no state should have the right to dictate this. This is a very slippery slope. One day it is the transgender candidate and the next…? Sterilization should only be used in extreme cases of mental illness or mental disability.

I would say that it is obvious that Nemesis possesses most information about the process than others.

Still, without a full understanding of the ethical problem here, IF there is a situation where a transsexual (or "look-alike" transsexual) has kids, these kids must have some psychological problems, even if the problems are coming from the society around them, rather than their own perception of genders.

These problems must be even deeper that those who are children to lesbian/gay couples (genders still play a different role in the child development and that is why gay couples are seeking more intensive participation of grandpa/grandma in their child's life).

I do not see the problem if that is what CD are trying to defend. From what I read, they care about kids and not the people themselves who decide to go on with the operation.

Qassim - you don't want to start a discussion in regards to what a real muslim WOULD do, that is highly moral and inspiring. (Your 8 y/o has a designated husband from your village elders already, or are you still waiting, risking for her to become a face-showing embarrassment for the ascendants? The pre-payment made, or is it a "payment-on-arrival" deal?)

Good.

Don't forget to have a speech of western rotten ethics at the circumcision celebration of your daughter. Make sure that the piece of metal is properly rusty.

I definitely agree that the free will of western world people who spend their own money on doing to themselves whatever they want is a result of awful ethical deficiencies of the atheist civilization. How can we not see all the benefits of the pure and inviting religious salvation??? Especially women...
