June figures dip in strong auto market

In June there were 27,485 new cars registered in Sweden, a drop by 2.8 percent compared to the same month last year, according to industry organisation Bil Sweden, representing manufacturers and importers of cars, trucks and buses.

2011 started strong for the car industry and so far 157,042 cars have been registered in Sweden this year, which is an increase of 13.7 percent compared to last year.

“The minor decrease in June was affected by there being fewer days to register this month compared to the same month last year, equivalent of a decrease by 10 percent,” said Bil Sweden’s CEO Bertil Moldén in a statement.

He also added that the market was gaining strength this time last year.

“So we're comparing against strong figures from last year,” he continued.

Looking at the full picture, the market has been “very strong” for the automotive industry the first 6 months of 2011, according to Moldén.

In June 221 Saab cars were re-registered, which is a drop by 73.6 percent compared to the same month last year. Since the beginning of the year 3,137 Saabs have been registered, signifying a decrease by 1.6 percent.

The number of new registrations for Volvo increased in June by 10.5 percent to 5,258 and in total in the first 6 months of 2011 by 19.7 percent to 29,338.

Saab’s decline was expected, according to Bertil Moldén.

“The factory has been at a standstill for weeks. If you don’t have any production you won’t be delivering cars to customers and hence you have no new registrations,” he told TT

Volvo can thank its diesel engine cars for the strong figures, according to Moldén.

“Diesel is getting increasingly more popular and June has been the best diesel month so far, “ Moldén told TT.

Saab will be just fine, the Brand has significant value (yes $$$ value), and there are some that know this and others that do not. In the United States, marketing has been poor, the cars are MSRP-d a levels that anyone even starting their research says, "I can get a 5 series BMW or 6 Series Audi for the same price and they never make it to the showroom. Depending on what state and the dealer, I can usually over the last 30 years, get 3-8 thousand off MSRP, then the competition is Nissan, a Honda, Toyota. A Saab, is just a better and safer car (though they depreciate a tad faster). Standard options are amazing, power and fuel economy are not matched, but Saab needs to define their market, and it is not against BMW and AUDI.

Remember, a computer company was near bankrupt numerous times in the late 80's and 90's, I think the name was Apple (highest value tech company in the world now). It will play out, Saab got some new top brass from Subaru and Chrysler (Jeep division) and will be back on the block. Also, I challenge anyone to drive the new 9-5 and they are giving 10K off, and give it some serious consideration. I have two 9-3's now, and have had 7 Saabs to date and feel good when my family is driving around in them, as the new 9-5, they blow away the crash comparisons each and every time.

What i would like to know is why cars in Sweden are up to 100,000kr more than in other parts of Europe. I am looking at a Skoda Yeti. top of the range in Uk is £25,000 in Sweden it's over 300,000. why when the Kr is so strong. Also you get a 5year guarantee in the uk but only a 2 year in Sweden. They were even paying the Vat in Uk. which is 20% now. This was reported in the Swedish news paper that cars were 100,000kr more here. I am looking into importing one.

i love Saab and Volvo too, i'm from Romania and here nobody buy these cars, i dont know why, many knows Volvo as the safety car, about Saab many don't talk, but i saw one last year...but Bmw it's much, audi and vw, old model's under 2006, here is poor and poor cars with low engines. I have had Dacia 1310 old car, but worked very good, i sold it because the engine drink too much petrol, i think how much a Volvo of 180 hp gasoline. Now i dont have money to buy a modern car, i must to buy again dacia i think...to import one, exemple to buy a Volvo S40 diesel, because here is common diesel, damn, maybe in Sweden one second hand is about 30.000 kr and the taxe for register in romania cost 80.000 kr more than value car. The state romanian steals from people and the taxe is aberant big. And to buy one new, the bank no acording credit, so i stay at Dacia 1410 1.4 which cost about 1000 euros and cheap to maintan.
