The two Swedish reporters being held in custody in Ethiopia may face a court on Tuesday, but according to the Foreign Ministry it is not yet known what they are charged with.

“They are alive and held by the authorities, but we don’t know how seriously injured they are,” said Linn Duvhammar at the Foreign ministry to news agency TT.

Freelance journalist Johan Persson and photo-journalist Martin Schibbye first entered Ethiopia by crossing the border to Somalia. The purpose of the journey was to shadow the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) Guerrilla and report on the conflict between the Somali guerrillas and the Ethiopian state.

On Sunday news agency TT reported that the UK branch of the ONLF had said in a statement that a pro-Ethiopian newspaper had published the names of the missing Swedes and confirmed that they had been taken into custody by the army.

The paper also was reported saying that the two men’s guerrilla guides had been killed.

Roxwall told TT that Schibbye and Persson had promised to check in with her every third day, but since June 27th it has not been possible for her or for their families to get in touch with them.

Abdi Mahdi, who heads of the UK branch of the ONLF organization in London told TT on Sunday evening that he had been in contact with the reporters three days ago.

“I spoke to them when they were on their way into Ogaden, and we provided them with guides and directions. The plan was for them to tour the whole area but when we didn’t hear from them we began to worry,” Mahdi told TT.

Later on Sunday night it was confirmed by Ethiopian authorities that Ethiopian soldiers had killed 15 ONLF rebels in the Ogaden region.

Schibbye and Persson, who accompanied them, were reported to have sustained minor injuries in the clash between guerrilla and government forces.

“15 rebels, all armed, were killed and six were injured. Two Swedish reporters sustained minor injuries during the fighting,” Shimelis Kemal, spokesman for the Ethiopian government told news agency Reuters on Sunday.

He added that the Swedes were currently held in custody but were receiving treatment for their injuries.

Both journalists have now been able to contact their families, according to Sveriges Radio (SR). But their condition is believed to be serious.

The Swedes have confirmed that they sustained injuries when shot at by Ethiopian soldiers three days ago, but claim that they have yet to receive any treatment.

According to the foreign ministry, Persson and Schibbye have been taken to Jijiga in the Somali region, where they may stand trial in an Ethiopian court on Tuesday.

According to Ethiopian authorities the two reporters have entered the country illegally and are therefore being held in custody.

“We have received information that they will go to court tomorrow but we have not been informed as to what the charges are,” Kent Öberg of the foreign ministry information service told TT.

“We have advised against traveling to Ogaden for some time, partly because it is a dangerous area and partly because we have limited opportunities to help there,” Duvhammar told TT.

“Now the Swedish embassy is struggling to make contact with the Swedes, to get to see them and check how they are,” she said.

the courage of the Swedish two Journalist are tremendous. In the end they want to disclose the suffering and plight of the Ogaden people and rise genuine question to Swedish and Europe donor who fund the Genocide there in the name of development. There is always a reason government refusal of access to media, human right organizations and diplomats. The west shares the blame for funding with out alarm and even not acknowledging the problem.

ONLF is the Ethiopian branch of Al-Shabab. It is beyond logic and reason why the two journalists happen to be with a terrorist organization. Besides, they should not have entered Ethiopia illegally. Therefore, they should get proper medical treatment, and then tried at least in two counts: as accomplices to a terrorist organization and for entering the Ethiopian territory illegally. The fact that they are Swedes cannot make them above the law nor can this fact be a mitigating circumstance.

They will be charged for being whites. What is good for Swedes is good for Ethiopians. Remember the Ethiopians delegates that were "so poor" that they were not granted visas to enter Sweden?

Who is Roxwall? The one who wrote the "news" did not explain who Roxwall is. The Local should have editors on hand. It is beginning to look like a normal tabloid where you have to guess almost everything.

ONLF terrorists machine gunned to death 74 Chinese and Ethiopian oil workers asleep in their beds, killed UN food aid workers...

...But Swedish "reporters" think it's OK for them to make $$$ by crossing border illegaly with ONLF terrorists and publicizing another killing mission. Too many foreign reporters are doing this, enough...make an example of them!

The Chinese were warned and those held alive were sent back to their countries. If there is one terrorist in this region it is TPLF and associates. Do you know that ONLF won the first democratic election in the region ever, and do you what followed after that? it was TPLF who terrorised the people for electing ONLF. They hunted unarmed ONLF party members. The only option left for ONLF was to defend itself and the country and that is what it is exactly doing now.

These 'journalists' have entered Ethiopia without the permission of pertinent authorities. They deserve to be punished atleast for crossing the boundery of a sovereign country illegally. Why would they think they could play above the law? This is not about ONLF or TPLF or the behaviour of the Ethiopian government, but the unacceptable deed of these guys. They should learn their lessons and i hope that the Ethiopian government will punish them accordingly.

I wonder how the Swedes were supposed to enter the Ogaden, ask Ethiopia? I am confident they were denied many times and as Journalists they intended to get to the bottom of the story as to why Ethiopia has blockaded this region of which human rights and other human rights groups say is the focus of a brutal campaign against civilians by the Ethiopian government. The government of Ethiopia is a brutal killing machine that has no respect for the free media, human rights groups and aid organisations who want to reach the suffering millions in the Ogaden. It is a moral obligation upon governments, Media organisations, NGOs, and Human rights group to demand and push for access in the Ogaden. Its time Governments that provide billions worth of aid to Ethiopia to re-think this unacceptable offering, they are directly funding genocide in places like the Ogaden and across other parts of Ethiopia.

Bravo! BravO! A well done job guys. As much as the free press is concerned, the Swedish journalists have proved to commited journalists. keep on the good work and I call the Swedish goverment to work on their immediate release. Ogaden is no go zone, even the swedish government and EU member are aware but I wonder WHY? Gefrey Gettlemen was the first Journalist to uncover the untold stories in the Ogeden in 2007. But him and his other staff from the NY TIMES ware detained and their equipment confiscated. since then Ogaden has had many names. The Unreported world, The hiden world, The forgotted world etc.
