Make Sweden a 'settler country': minister

Published: 7 Jul 11 16:43 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/34804/20110707/

At a press conference on Thursday, resigning Centre Party head and minister for enterprise and energy, Maud Olofsson, revealed that her speech at Almedalen later this evening will point out the three top priority challenges for the Centre Party to tackle in the future.

"I get extremely depressed when I see how poorly we've managed integration. I'm so tired of hearing about immigrants being stigmatised and described in solely negative terms, such as unemployment and criminality," said Olofsson.

The first challenge therefore is making Sweden a "settler country", where immigrants are welcomed, and invited to help make Sweden strong.

The second challenge is creating a Sweden where entrepreneurs can blossom, and small innovative companies can grow.

The third challenge, according to Olofsson, is creating a green and sustainable Sweden.

"Interest in environmental issues is dropping, while carbon dioxide emissions continue to grow. It seems we can only discuss one thing at a time."

Olofsson also presented an open letter to her successor, and to her colleagues in the centre-right alliance. In her letter they are encouraged to cherish those agreements the alliance has made, particularly within energy politics. Olofsson points out that this was the most difficult deal to make, for the Centre Party.

She also reminds them that one of the central point behind the political alliance was that all the parties should be able to contribute and gain from the cooperation.

"I think a great challenge from here on will be to make sure that all four parties are visible and continue to grow," writes Olofsson.

"Everyone has to feel that they have something to gain from this cooperation."

Within the Centre Party there has recently been some discontent with the Moderate Party's overbearing role in the alliance.

Olofsson did not want to criticise the Moderates at the press conference, however, nor did she express concern that her successor would not cherish the alliance cooperation, instead explaining that she simply wrote the open letter to ensure that the "original sentiment" behind the cooperation is preserved.

Her speech on Thursday evening will be her tenth and last at Almedalen. At the press conference Olofsson fought to contain her tears when speaking of her decade as Centre Party leader.

"I'm grateful to have been a part of the political world, and to have been allowed to lead the Centre Party and Sweden. But now it feels good to be handing over the relay baton," she said.

At the end of the press conference Olofsson was unable to hold back her tears, and had to ask her staff for a handkerchief.

Little crocodile tears. Maud Olofsson's three challenges:

The first challenge therefore is making Sweden a "settler country", where immigrants are welcomed, and invited to help make Sweden strong.

Comment: She is dreaming. Once upon a time, they were welcomed. Now they are rejected. The majority is rejected by the same Swedes because of the burden they represent for the Swedish finances.

The second challenge is creating a Sweden where entrepreneurs can blossom, and small innovative companies can grow.

Comment: She must have smoked "marihuana".

The third challenge, according to Olofsson, is creating a green and sustainable Sweden.

Comment: The sales of green paint will increase at 100%.

No wonder why almost nobody likes little tiny Maud. She has been a burden for the government and for the Center Party.

The Minister is quite attractive, but when I see the tears... These crocs...

You are dreaming, and in denial. Do your own work.

Those you let in are ungrateful and bring their wars to your shores.

Integration will never work in SE.

Your country is almost lost and unattractive to tourists.

The SE I saw in '70's was clean, honest, friendly, cohesive. Now you have the Malmo warzone.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Sweden has been settled for up to 11 000 years. Her wording is strange. What does she mean?
20:21 July 7, 2011 by Mb 65
What is wrong with Sweden. The reason Sweden is a great place to live is the lack of people. The fields are disappearing has the towns expand. Everywhere you go there are new houses and flats being built.
21:48 July 7, 2011 by unseen
@torsporre,

'integration will never work in se'

you are 100% right, as long as people like your mentality are hanging around.

@Mb 65,

How can only one woman change the centuries old mentality. These Swedes do not even like to sit next to an immigrant. So much racist. They make discrimination in planning settlements, how would things change. They have a policy of discrimanation at workplace, schools and elsewhere. If Muslims do not want their social fabric to be attcked, why the swedes try to attack in schools, colleges, workplace and else where. Swedes have to learn that Muslims are everincreasing and they will never compromise. Let them live in their own way with their traditions.
22:05 July 7, 2011 by helveeta
A "settler" country??!! That is disturbing. She acts as if it's a barren wasteland with no civilization! That's such an insult to the people who live, work, pay taxes and who's families have built and loved the traditions of Sweden for centuries! Sweden is strong already! It will never be the US and it shouldn't want to be! I am so thankful my children will be grown before these nuts give the ENTIRE country away to all the whack jobs they are allowing to invade it!
22:33 July 7, 2011 by darky
@ Glamshek, I 2nd all what of what you said. There is an illness in scandinavia. I guess my next studies will be to sequence the human genome so as to isolate this gene which codes for racism. From here we can think about what to do. Discrimination is the order of the day. It sucks .......!!!!!!
22:35 July 7, 2011 by glamshek
Sweden is too much uncivilized. Please keep in touch with other views of the worls. read beyond BBC , CNN.

In USA currently there is a big gap between its people and govt. Please be updated that Islam is experiencing its revival in Arab world. Dictators are being taken to the task one after the other. USA is crumbling. Iran is leading the way in Mid East, Pakistan is bracing for war and ultimate liberation from US and its cronies. Braitain is falling. Africa is overhauling its system. The West is going down economically and socially. China is emerging as economic power.
22:47 July 7, 2011 by helveeta
Hey you people unhappy in Sweden with its terrible racists, why not leave? It's such a bad place, you're right.

total crap.

did you know if a EU citizen wants to settle in sweden he/she will stand in the same line as all other immigrants, whilst passing passport control there are two lines - one for EU and one for non-EU citizen.

what's the point with EU? sort it out dumb politicians

"'I'm so tired of hearing about immigrants being stigmatised and described in solely negative terms, such as unemployment and criminality,' said Olofsson"

So, non-Western European immigrants to Sweden don't have dramatically higher unemployment levels, and don't comprise an overwhelming majority of serious crimes in Sweden? It's true that doesn't mean every immigrant doesn't want to work and/or is going to commit a crime, but statistics exist for a reason. You can't ignore facts simply because it might be construed as being "racist" or "bigoted." If I know my neighbor's kid is stealing things out of my garage I'm not going to focus my attention on all the kids in the neighborhood ... I'm going to focus it on the one that steals from me.

Stereotypes aren't always correct in every situation, but they always have an element of truth to them ... otherwise they wouldn't survive as a stereotype. Sweden needs to do a better job of being more selective in who they allow to immigrate to their country -- it doesn't matter where they come from. Simply taking in people from third world countries and expecting them to magically adopt Swedish customs and values because you're really super duper nice to them and give them all kinds of nice things for free doesn't really work. Most of the time what happens is they either import less civilized aspects of their indigenous culture and refuse to assimilate, or developed a overblown sense of entitlement and victim mentality. That doesn't mean ALL immigrants are that way, but I'd wager about 3 out of 4 are ...
01:43 July 8, 2011 by V70
When will the Swedes as a people learn..

Their history and heritage go back thousands of years..thats what makes them who they are..and to attempt to integerate another segment of populace with differing religions..ethics..traditions and values..into this rich culture is foolish

both segments will be alienated..period

Social "engineering" has never worked..You attempt to integrate..historically

different cultures..and although the intentions are admirable..they ALWAYS FAIL

Wake up Sweden...

I am not sure what are the Swedish Govt's general approach to integration. A few European countries seem to be caving under their attempts to build utopian multi-cultural societies.

Reality, migration is not going to disappear, you cannot selectively choose which countries people can migrate from, this breaks equality laws in every civilized country on earth. People must learn to adapt when they move, for many, moving is optional so when you do, integration cannot be optional. No country on the Earth can survive without some form of migration, that is a fact, deal with it. No country on Earth. So we cannot be ignorant about this. People will move into our societies we might not necessarily them nor the act, but it is by no means a licence for exclusion.

Integration is no simple thing to describe, when people move we often try to take along aspects of our identity sometimes so simply expressed as the beloved marmite. There are middle grounds, where migrants can assimilate into society while still keeping some sense of cultural identity. This is not impossible as long as it is not too ambitious. Of course, a key part of integration on a migrants part is as simple as learning the local language. I cannot say how surprised I was when I met a Swedish Citizen who barely spoke any Swedish. How do you relate, make an informed voting decsion or render assistance to a fellow citizen in need.

But further, the perceptions of migrants or those from outside still bears interesting stigma within Sweden. I have friends that won't live in certain areas in the city. Even one who will not use his visa-card at certain types of establishments for fear that it will almost certainly be cloned. These are sometimes unnecessary stigma. Granted, crimes are sometimes associated with different sects of people but if society took approaches like this and exorcise entire communities for the crimes of a few then one would only have to cast eyes on Nazi Germany or even just the Church.

Point in fact, I just a few hours ago was at my local supermarket, while waiting in the queue at the checkout she sent me an sms and I proceeded to reply. The guy in front was paying started to take extra precautions to hide his card and pin. He was not using just his hand but rather some huge brown implement, perhaps his wallet or a bag or something, I though nothing of it so I did pay notice. Now it is my turn to pay, the lady at the checkout decides to give me a stern warning about taking pictures at the checkout when other people are there paying. I politely informed her that I was merely about my business sending an sms to which she replied that, in this case it was ok. Now, of all the possible permutations of things I could do on my phone, both she and the man assumed I was trying to steal his card information.

Now I am not assuming the reasons behind their intentions but if this is a general stigma migrants endure then there is still some work to be done somewhere.

Is this woman Sweden's national idiot?

Immigrants with needed skills/education or the willingness to work hard doing jobs where their are labor shortages and who have the desire to immerse themselves in the culture of their new country are wonderful additions.

Poorly educated immigrants with no work ethic with little desire to adapt to their new country are at best burdens and often much worse.

sure the country is already full of romanian slaves -_-x
08:15 July 8, 2011 by RobinHood
Swedes are as open to immigration as any other race - probably more.

Their issue, as expressed by the rising vote of the SWD in the last election, is:

(1) Why are there so many of them compared with other country's intake?

(2) Why don't they try more to adapt to Swedish culture instead of insisting it should be Sweden that adapts to them? (see #9 above as a splendid example)

(3) Why are most of the huge numbers of immigrants absorbed into Sweden unable, or unwilling to get a job, pay tax and make a positive contibution to the state instead they seem pleased to become a burden to the state for the rest of their lives? There are noble exceptions, but not nearly enough.

(4) Why do some categories of immigrants appear disproportionately in Sweden's records; particularly for of sexual offences, but for many other crimes too?

I have no idea what the answers are to any of these questions. As Maud says, somethings not right. Sweden's immigration policies are a disaster for Swedes and immigrants alike, and it's not just Maud who ought to be crying over this.

Swedish people are not racists. But they are so proud of having Blue eyes and blond hair.
09:58 July 8, 2011 by ooh456
I've lived in 4 counties. Swedes are overall great compared to most nationalities. If an immigrant is respectful and well-educated they will be welcomed with open arms no matter what they look like. It took me 10 months to score a great job and buy an apartment on Sodermalm. I am not blond haired and blue eyed and I have a funny sounding last name. Don't make excuses for yourself and blame Swedes for being Swedish.
10:13 July 8, 2011 by helveeta
A lot of good points in the comments of this article I have to say. @glamshek I KNOW that Sweden has become the US's bitch and I hate it and am trying to figure out why and how. Not much I can do but I live in Sweden and see that the immigration situation here isn't helping anyone. Swedes are unhappy, the immigrants are unhappy but don't know how to fix it. I don't think bringing in more immigrants is not a good idea at this point for anyone.
11:33 July 8, 2011 by axiom
@JoeB - don't be ignorant with your parotic repititions about welfare and jobs. Its high time all intelligent people realise this is nothing more than bullsh*t.

And YES no country in history has survived without migration. It built the Roman Empire and in fact the entire Europe including Sweden. It is how kingdoms were conquered, unions were created and reasons many wars were fought and won. It is how the entire Americas was created, yeh that place that gave us Internet, powered flight and modern medicine.

Migration has been so important, its opposition by the king is cited in the american declaration of independence as a reason to leave the British Colonies. So lets not get ahead of ourselves with our entitlement sydrome "they are coming to steal what is mine, i want it all for myself lalala". That's plain ignorance. The majority of tech companies, Google, Ebay, Yahoo, Intel, etc have all been founded by migrants, you know the job stealing, welfare grabbing people.

If 1 in 10 of these companies should become insolvent tomorrow, the very entitlements you are proud of and boast about would vapourize almost instantly.

Stop being ignorant and learn how to integrate into a changing world dynamics, its not the same world your father had that could just be fixed , apparently by reproduction.

@RobinHood

A probe was conducted in Sweden sometime ago about applicants for jobs. All the non-Swedish applicants, all bar none, were not considered....There were statistics published on surveys to employers on how often they employed a foreigner and they were shocking....so this is not make belief, there is a real reluctance to hire immigrants - even if arbetsfor-wots-his-name is willing to subsidise their pay.

So stop blaming people who are prevented from helping themselves.

The Mexican government does not like to send poor Mexicans to work in the USA. It is a matter of being poor and trying to survive and to take care of the families left behind.

If you do not know what you are talking about, please think before vomiting. And please, do not try to come to Sweden. Swedes might be crazi but not stupid enough to receive more racists like you.
15:04 July 11, 2011 by DamnImmigrant2
The Swedish culture is probably the most advanced culture the human race has created! It is NOT easy for immigrants to understand. Bringing immigrants into Sweden and saying welcome to Sweden, you are free to go about your way, have a nice life - IS JUST PLAIN WRONG!

Not educating immigrants about Sweden and the Swedish way of life - is wrong!

Citizenship in this country is a joke because the government places NO VALUE on this act! I have my Citizenship but I KNOW NOTHING about the government! I KNOW NOTHING about it's history and I KNOW NOTHING about its laws or even law enforcement! WHY DO I HAVE MY CITIZENSHIP HERE? How can the government have such a LOW opinion of this very important document?

Educating immigrants and testing their knowledge of the country they wish to call home and making them sign "Expectations Of Behavior" documents would go a long way to creating a more peaceful, unified and safer society.

@TheLight - the studies that alecLoTh refers to has been done in nearly every country with the SAME RESULTS. It is not just Sweden! They even ran it in the US using Black sounding names and non-black sounding names. The same EXACT resume that was turned down because it had a Black name, was accepted with a non-black name.

I know immigrants to Sweden who changed their names to Swedish names to avoid this problem.
