Sweden Democrats suffer drop in support

The Sweden Democrats have lost one in three voters over the past month according to the latest opinion survey.

Only 4.2 of the electorate described the party as their favourite last month, down by 2.4 percent from the previous month, reports TT.

The voter survey, carried out by Skop, was based on telephone interviews with 1059 people made during the period between June 17th and July 3rd. They were asked the question: "Which is your favourite political party?"

The result was good news for the centre-right Alliance which saw a 2.3 percent rise in popularity, closing the gap on the Red-Green opposition, polling their second best result since the election in 2010. Support for the two largest parties, the Moderates and the Social Democrats, remains at a pretty steady 30 percent meanwhile.

The Liberal (Folkpartiet) and Centre parties have both seen a rise in popularity recently, with the Centre party especially on a roll, having increased in each of the past three months.

The Green Party has also seen a slight increase, but the latest opinion poll has not been so positive for the Christian Democrats. Only 3.1 percent of those surveyed described them as their favourite party.

It remains to be seen how the recent campaigning in Almedalen will effect the electorate, although the Social Democrats leader Håkan Juholt will be hoping for a boost after his speech on Friday during which he presented a sweeping row of new points on labour and employment reforms. The Sweden Democrats Party has lost one in three voters over the past month according to the latest opinion survey.

Oh this means so much, not! Phone surveys? Also, a lot of people don't talk about being SD because there's a stigma attached to it. I was waiting for my husband to finish voting at our local polling place the last election and noticed a woman very uncomfortable with me sitting near to where the cards were placed. Her actions made me pay attention then I saw her picking up SD cards and then knew why.

I guess the next election will tell for sure...

@helveeta,

oh! what a story!

or it just happens that you are another desperate promoter for SD!?
11:12 July 10, 2011 by calebian22
SD dissenters need to remember that before the last election, polls showed SD as being at or below the Riksdag threshold. 5.7 percent came as a big surprise. Hand wringing and shame over "bigoted Sweden" abounded. Considering that immigration policy is business as usual in the Alliance and Red/Greens, an even bigger surprise is coming in 2014.
11:37 July 10, 2011 by johnny1939
Dont' you believe it!!! Who would give out personal info to a telephone canvasser these days anyway? I believe we will see an increase for SD in next election and a decrease of sossarna.

Go SD!!!! Clarity will prevail!
12:20 July 10, 2011 by riose
@johnny1939 If they made 2 surveys with a month of difference, the results are significant, because 1000 random anonymous people cannot coordinate to tell the truth in a survey and to lie in the next at the same time.

Surveys have a confidence interval, which usually is pretty high. They are not 100% accurate, but maybe 95%. This means that maybe SD has lost 2.2% instead of 2.4%, but it is also possible that they have lost 2.6%.

What was the margin of error with this poll? When poll results of any kind are published, it is customary to include the margin of error, but unless I missed something that information is not contained in this article.

Therefore, the headline associated with the article, "Voters desert the Sweden Democrats," is intellectually dishonest and wildly exaggerated. Simply wishful thinking by Sverigedemokraterna opponents.

Helveeta is correct hat the next election in 2014 will be the true test. And I think we all know the SD will pick up additional numbers.

It may not seem important but the survey is not actually asking how you would vote. The question is: 'What is your favourite Political party?' This type of wording is not used by most credible pollsters in other countries (Yougov, Ipsos Mori in the UK for example), as it slightly distorts people's answers. A number of people answer according to who has had the most positive press etc rather than who they will actually vote for come an election. (This has a negative effect on numbers for more extreme parties). So 'voodoo poll' time.

I think the reality is that the SD probably are at the same level of support as at the last election. The reality is they will only gain significant numbers if there is (God forbid) a serious terrorist incident or high profile criminal case involving immigrants. (Or serious breakdown in Law and Order in say Malmo-race/religious riots?)

Whilst the economy remains strong people will still stay with the status quo, the current government will remain fairly popular if they don't say or do something mad (doubtful). The opposition won't make any headway since there are not enough 'negatives' for them to jump on. I think we are most likely to see a loosening of the bond of the Alliance parties and the Greens may well come into that picture. There is no real identity left for the Center/KD parties with the strength of the Moderates.Sweden may possibly see a Moderate/Green based coalition next time round
14:24 July 10, 2011 by helveeta
@unseen. How does my recounting a story make me a desperate promoter?? You're strange. Actually, a week after the vote, the woman's home (she is our neighbor) was vandalized after the SD website was hacked and the names of people who were interested in SD were released. Nice behavior!

Anyways, regarding this "survey" it's 100% propaganda I am convinced. The timing is also in line with my theory.

BTW, I do support SD. I think immigration needs to be halted since SO many have come in the last 10 years and this country really needs some sorting out before more should come. At SFI, some people in my class have lived in Sweden for 8 years and didn't speak any Swedish. Obviously, they lived here without a job all that time as well. Not good for the country!

In America, the Republican party is against immigration and no one says that's racist. Because it has NOTHING to do with race. If there were millions of white Canadians living in Sweden sucking the system and not learning the language, SD would still be saying halt immigration. Some people have chips on their shoulder that's not Sweden's fault.
14:37 July 10, 2011 by Streja
No, SD arre not against immigration from the US or Canada.

all bets are on. unless the alliance do something about the immigration problem SD will reach 10% in the next election - my word.

however if the alliance (and the redgreen) does something about it which they have then SD will most likely stay at the same levels.

on a personal note the immigration policy in sweden sux. a close friend has recently married a british national and she has to wait up to 9 months for her residence permit. in the meantime she cannot leave sweden or she will be deported upon return ..........this is the law.

EU passport holders are placed in the same line as the rest of the world so what is the F point in having EU in the first place in this country - free movement of people NOT
16:29 July 10, 2011 by helveeta
I never said SD are against immigration from the US or Canada. It was a hypothetical situation. There aren't floods of people coming here from those countries--therefore of course they're not against it. People who come here from those countries have to prove they can work and/or have connections here.
17:35 July 10, 2011 by ringorm
http://status.st/

Check the average voting for SD instead.

Also in that poll 3 other parties (V, KD, C) are below the 4% for parliament, should that not be the bigger news?
19:11 July 10, 2011 by jostein
Well, there are two surveys showing the same thing at the same time so whatever it means, it means something. It would be interesting to see where these voters went? Did they go to the seven? Or did they go to the sofa? Or did they go to the "others"?
14:45 July 11, 2011 by helveeta
@Jimmy, probably also depends on where the calls were made.

I'm from Mississauga, Canada. I believed in 'multiculturalism' as a young man, until I watched my culture wiped out and taken away.

No doubt - Canadians to a very good job at integrating immigrants. For that - we deserve accodlaides.

THE DIRT SECRET:

The only way to really make mass immigration work - is to give up all of your customers. No more Christmas (it's a cultural festival, not just religious), possible no more Swedish language (you think that's crazy - it's not - in 2 generations you could all be speaking English as a first language).

In Nice, France, the street signs are written both in French and Nicoise (the old ones) - but nobody speaks Nicoise anymore. It's gone.

In only 2 generations, there will be no more Sweden if you are not careful.

This is something that happens over time, so it's not noticeable. What you think of as 'Swedish' will be diluted, so that you're children's generation think less of it - and don't care as much. Your grandchildren who will speak English better than Swedish won't really care that much.

Ethnicity plays a strong role in this. Those of you who consider yourself' 'Swedish' now - your grandchildren will more likely speak Swedish at home of course. But a Somalian Muslim immigrant? Why should they care? They will speak English first.

We don't have a linguistic problem in Toronto, but we have basically no culture left - over 1/2 the population is foreign.

In Montreal - they have a huge problem - immigrants don't want to speak French, they want to speak English. And a new immigrant from Somali will take your government to court and eventually win the right to have instruction in his language of choice - English.

The language is just one example - everything else will follow.

Look around Swedes - you are the last.

@jomamas

i think your point is full of fallacies even they have little truth in them.people cannot be forced to change.when i moved here.i didn't learn Swedish in my first year because i taught i would just go back home.early in my second year i changed my mind, started learning never been to SFI before, learn Swedish from friends,tv.newspapers everything possible.its bad when people think they know it all.
