Anti-Semitic hate crime declines in Malmö: report

Published: 17 Jul 11 16:33 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/34994/20110717/

Hate crimes against Jews living in Malmö, in southern Sweden, are growing less common, reported Swedish radio station SR. The number of reported crimes are less than half as many as 2009's record-high number.

At the same time, racist and islamophobic crime is on the rise in Sweden's third-largest city.

During 2009, as many as 80 anti-Semitic hate crimes, taking the form of threats, violence, graffiti and harassment in schools were reported.

The high number sparked an intense debate, and caused the Jewish organisation Simon Wiesenthal Centre to dissuade Jews from travelling to the city, warning of a high risk of harassment.

New statistics from the Skåne police force show that anti-Semitic crime decreased sharply in 2010, with 33 reported cases.

Susanne Gosenius, hate crime coordinator with the Skåne police, believes that 2009's high figure can be explained by a few exceptional circumstances that occurred that year.

"We can see that the reports made in 2009 were derived from the events that took place in Malmö, for instance two major Israel demonstrations, and the Davis Cup, when Israel were here and played. Quite a few of the reports occurred walking to or from the demonstrations, or the Davis Cup games," she said to SR.

While anti-Semitic crime figures are dropping, Malmö hate crimes with racist or islamophobic motives have increased sharply.

167 racist hate crimes were reported in the city in 2009. One year later the figure was 302. Over the same period, islamophobic hate crimes increased from 7 to 40 reported cases.

"My guess is that within the police we've become better at acknowledging them, and the media discussion that occurred the year before may have made people more likely to report crimes," said Susanne Gosenius.

She underlines that special efforts have been made within the police force to educate about hate crimes.

"We also have special hate crime investigators, and hate crimes are a prioritized subject for us."

Malmö's Jewish community, while happy to see diminishing figures, continues to feel concerned about anti-Semitic sentiments in their city.

"It's an established fact that there is an anti-Semitic current in Malmö. That hasn't changed from one year to the next," said Fredrik Sieradzki, spokesman for Malmö's Jewish community, who also takes care to note that while the crimes persist, the group responsible for them is very small.

A bit has been left out of this.

A lot of jews have left malmö in the last couple of years, so there are less jews for anti-semetics to attack. That is the reason for the drop in anti-semetic hate crimes.

The police in malmö do nothing to prevent hate crimes of any kind.

However the police in Malmö are experts at finding good pizza. They really could get jobs as pizza consultants.

It is all about education for teeangers and unemployment for older ones!

Fix the economy and educate everyone you will see how racism will go away!

The fact that Sweden has less racial crimes is due to high level of education about this issue. But unfortunately not all all immigrants get this education. I suspect most of these anti-Semist and Islamophobic crimes come for immigrants. Only by looking at thelocal's comment section one can see that most Islamohpbic comments come from US/UK immigrants.

Nemesis; Spot on. The Jews booked out from Malmö hence the decline in hate incidents. As to the pizza consultant jobs for Five-O, we can also promote them to the ranks of ticked wardens (Lapplisa)
20:45 July 17, 2011 by Tennin
Exactly Nemesis. Most of the Jewish people in Malmö left it since the police weren't doing anything to help them.

Just last year, The Local posted the article "Jews flee Malmö as anti-Semitism grows":

"He describes for the newspaper how people call him "damn Jew" ('jävla jude') when he walks to synagogue and that his friends are frequently harassed and threatened." (thelocal.se/24632/20100127/ )

Unbelievable, trying to take credit for the crime reduction against Jews when so many have already left town.

Obviously they look on the Swedish population as complete eejits.

I see that it's ok to swear & curse in Swedish on this forum! el desperado show some restraint... everybody gets on good when prices are favorable .. racism is just another form of jealousy .. Malmo has the best falafel anywhere, so I was told by someone in Varberg this week. Falafel wrap in Malmo cost 25 Kronor. Falafel wrap in Varberg cost 75 Kronor. Go figure why people in Varberg aren't really into semitism.

"the truth of the matter is that there is nothing called "Anti-Semitic hate crimes", it is just an empty and meaningless term that was made up by bunch of fabricators"

you mean like "islamophobia"?

@Nemesis, spot on.
23:05 July 17, 2011 by el dorado
@J Jack - In regard to swearing, "jävle jud" was a direct quote from the article written by The Local.

The Local also uses "fvck" in its stories: As in Norway's "Fvck for Forest" and the Swedish government's own safe-sex campaign, "Fvck Deluxe" (from The Local's "Council Worker in Hot Water..." and "Swedes launch 'condom app'").

Posters, however, are not allowed to write "fvck" in standard English. Place names and references to place names are also censored.

Islamophobia is bullsht , i hate the religion as its used as a right wing conservative platform , and its ideals are 2000 year old dogma, i hate the muslim and christian religion with equal repugnance, dont come and call someone islamophobic just because they think their religion is retarded.

Want to play the victim card then take a look at how many victims have religions done.

i have muslim friends and christian friends and even jehova witness friend, i still say their religion is stupid but i still go out and have fun and talk to them as they are my friends.

shove that islamophibic bullsht down your throat and stop playing the victim card just because people dont like what islam , or christian or any religion stand for.

just what we are missing more dramaqueens victims, not liking someting doesnt mean you have phobia of it geez fking idiot

Hate crimes in Malmö against one-legged Albanian lion tamers stood at zero last year. Ilmar Reepalu, mayor of Malmö said he was "extremely proud" of this statistic which shows that "Malmö is obviously a wonderful place to live in - even for Jews."

All eyes are now focused on figures published next month for hate crimes in Malmö against citizens of the Pitcairn Islands who have a tattoo of Britney Spears on their left buttock. Mayor Reepalu said "if these stand at zero too, then I will be the best mayor since the mayor of Warsaw in 1942, who also achieved similar statistics".

@calebian

No, you're the voice of tolerance. The only problem is that many of your so-called tolerant comments here are classified as hate speech in real Sweden!!

In fact the number of hate speech and Islamophbia only in thelocal's comment section is more than 40. Fortunately these racist posters don't dare to do the same thing in real life!

Malmo is very comfortable city, vulgar behavious sometimes have a groups of teenagers, boys and girls.
10:29 July 18, 2011 by Hagrid
Congratulations Comrade2011, you've actually outdone yourself from last week in writing stupid comments. I'm having a hard time deciding which of the following two statements of yours is more ridiculous:

1. "If there were real Anti-Semitic hate crimes, then, the less Jews there, the more crimes will be [sic]" - Anyone following this bizarre logic? Cause I sure can't.

2. "But the truth of the matter is that there is nothing called "Anti-Semitic hate crimes", it is just an empty and meaningless term that was made up by bunch of fabricators" - Right. It's all lies. There are no physical and verbal attacks on Jews in Europe, no synagogues are being burnt, Jewish graves are never spraypainted with swasticas, the Holocaust never happened, the Martians landed in Roswell, and the earth is flat.
17:00 July 18, 2011 by Marc the Texan
I see previous commenters pegged it. The most effective way to reduce anti-semitic violence is to eliminate the target. Malmo's city leadership has been effective in the task they set out to achieve.
19:46 July 18, 2011 by Bleichroeder
Only 33 reported cases in a community of a few hundred old folks....what an impressive success! Good job Mr Mr. Reepalu.

I suspect both numbers (particularly the latter) will diminish further. Decimation of the Jewish people in Europe in general and Sweden/Malmo in particular will proceed for the same reasons as before.
01:00 July 19, 2011 by Alfred Nevada
In the last paragraph, the spokesman for the Jewish community of Malmö pretty much shot down the whole premise of the article (that Malmö Muslims are no longer hostile to the Malmö Jews):

"It's an established fact that there is an anti-Semitic current in Malmö. That hasn't changed from one year to the next."

Earlier today I wrote a comment about there being no humanatarian crisis in Gaza, that they had just completed some resorts right on the Sea, there was plenty of food and medicine and overstocked shops. I wrote this because I saw some Swedes were involved in the recent failed flotilla. Then swoosh, my post was wiped out and the site said there was a problem with my ID number. Having posted on this site before, I gathered someone wasn't pleased with my post.

So have Muslims taken over the online site? I won't be encouraged to keep coming here if they have.
