Hollywood pirate ship docks in Stockholm

While no Captain Sparrow or men with swords were in sight, another celebrity from the popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" films has been in Stockholm over the weekend - the good ship Bounty.

The Bounty has been called the most famous ship in the world and has starred in several films and TV shows. It's most famous recent role has been to play host to the likes of Stellan Skarsgård and Johnny Depp in the Disney-produced "Pirates of the Caribbean" films.

The Bounty is now taking a break from its Hollywood day job to go on a Baltic Sea tour and has put in to port near the Loch & Quay restaurant at Skeppsbron in Stockholm as part of its voyage.

Captain Robin Walbridge, who has been in charge of the ship for 16 years, explained that he wants to bring the ship to the public and let them see her beauty in real life and not just on screen.

“This is a part of history that has been lost,” he told The Local. “You don’t see ships like this anymore.”

The Bounty was built in 1960 to star in the Marlon Brando movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" and is a replica of the original merchant ship built in 1789 that the film is based on.

Captain Walbridge told The Local that the ship was supposed to be set on fire in the 1962 film but Marlon Brando grew so fond of her he threatened to not finish filming if the ship was burned.

The Bounty is 53 metres long and 35 metres tall and is one third bigger than the original ship.

Having starred in the very popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" films with Johnny Depp at the wheel, the ship has gained movie star status once again.

Captain Walbridge’s favourite film starring the Bounty is however "Treasure Island" from 1992, with Charlton Heston and Christian Bale.

The ship and its crew set off from Puerto Rico in April and have already been to England, Ireland, Belgium and Poland before stopping off in Sweden. It is due to leave Stockholm on Tuesday to travel to new destinations and expects be back in Puerto Rico in December.

While in Stockholm the captain and the crew will offer tours around the ship to tell the history of both the original ship and The Bounty in its alter-ego of "the movie star".

The word 'celebrity' has become seriously diluted.

It looks like it would be a lot of fun to walk around that ship.

I've seen this ship. It put in port where I live in the Pacific NW, USA one time for repairs it suffered during a storm.

Good stuff. Go see it.

And starred in a film made in 1962. A time traveller, indeed.

I saw it yesterday and my immediate impression was "I'ts so f*ing small" and it's one third bigger than the original.

Actually the boat is the replica built for the 1962 movie. It was refitted in 2006 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine USA, which is where I saw it. It was very impressive. There was another replica built for the 1984 movie with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins. That ship is currently in Hong Kong where it is used as a tourist attraction.
