Nurse used medical records for laundry note

A nurse from Lund, in southern Sweden, is in trouble after using a page from confidential medical records for a scribbled note she stuck up in the laundry room in the house where she lives.

The note was put up with an altruistic aim. It said: “Did you miss your laundry pick-up time? I will be here until 2 pm “ followed by the woman’s mobile number.

The problem was that on the back of the note, a patient’s name and medical information could easily be read.

A neighbour, discovering the note several hours later, reported the incident to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).

The neighbours had identified it as a page from what seemed to be someone’s medical records.

When the neighbours contacted the agency, they were told to send it in order for an investigation to be opened into the matter.

As the nurse’s name was mentioned on the page several times, the board concluded that she would have had access to the file, and obviously used part of it to write a message, in a matter unrelated to work, which could be read by a large number of people.

The agency is therefore demanding answers to a series of questions from the woman.

They want to know why the nurse used a page from a confidential file to write a message to a member of the public as well as if she has more confidential papers left in her home.

The agency also wants the nurse to answer whether this is a single occurrence or if she has left private notes on medical records at any other times.

The nurse has until August to respond to the agency’s queries and explain her conduct.

Only in Sweden could laundry be more important than medical confidentiality!!!

I seriously doubt this nurse will have to take any responsibility for her using a medical record as a note.
18:14 July 21, 2011 by jacquelinee
She should have hit the patient instead, then she would get a fully paid vacation, (oops! I mean suspension) and a full pardon with no investigation as they did with the nurses in Norrköping.'who pinched, sexually groped, shoved hands down a patient's throat and forced another to swallow their own vomit.

And as far as getting action from Socialstyrelsen.... why not just go bang your head against a cement wall. You will get about the same result, nothing except for a huge headache!

Is it me or swedish nurses are something to be afraid of?

Swedish medical people in general ....avoid getting sick or old here unless you can find a doctor who was trained somewhere else and slipped in through the " Swedish Clan Club" screening process. If you can't, I highly recommend self diagnosis from the internet, the prognosis would most certainly be better. It is scary here.

I lost alot of faith in the nurses and doctors here in Sweden from my own health problems I had to deal with.

I do my own prostate exam....just to be safe.

@ Swedesmith

Good for you! At least you know what and where it is. More than I can say for the doctors at Vårdcentralen. Tell them you need a prostrate exam and they would probably put a stethascope to your ear,

Its bad that people started to call the officials, they just could say her directly. If it's first time - no problem. We all can the right for one mistake.
