Swedish MPs seek gun law review

Published: 26 Jul 11 07:39 CET | Print version

Several political parties want to see a review of Sweden's gun laws in the wake of the twin terror attacks in Norway.

"The sad fact is that gun laws in Sweden allow the type of weapon that Breivik used in Norway, a type of semi-automatic weapon which is almost of military origin," said Christian Democrat Tuve Skånberg to Sveriges Radio's Ekot news programme.

The Centre Party, Liberal Party (Folkpartiet), Social Democrats and the Left have also voiced calls to review the legislation.

Swedish police stated yesterday that Anders Behring Breivik, who has admitted perpetrating Friday's attacks, who never have been able to obtain a licence for the weapon used in the massacre on Utøya.

Behring Breivik had obtained his permit for a Ruger semi-automatic rifle as he planned to hunt deer.

Lars Tonneman, director of the police law section at the National Police Agency (Rikspolisstyrelsen) said that licences would only be given in Sweden in extraordinary circumstances.

Roughly 2,500 individuals in Sweden have licenses for submachine guns. According to the Swedish Shooting Sport Association (Svenska skyttesportförbundet), this is the only type of automatic weapon that is used at Swedish shooting clubs.

Justice Minister Beatrice Ask has said that she is working on the issue on whether current legislation is in need of a review.

You can't beat a knee jerk reaction by the lefty politicians. It would be better if they legislated against people going mad.
09:47 July 26, 2011 by OddNewfi
Um err - sorry why do you need a submachine gun to take down a deer. Are roe deer now wearing bulletproof vests and carry a glock..? Red deer, come with shotguns and APCs...?

Would seem quite reasonable to me, to review the existing legislation to see if there is something that needs to be changed...? Lefty politicians...? How about just normal people who wonder - how many people do actually have automatic weapons and how are they regulated...?
09:49 July 26, 2011 by Grokh
who the hell needs a submachine gun, or an assault rifle?

there are plenty of weapons to hunt you dont need to shoot down animals with a pass by car mafia style, hunting weapons only need to do one shot isnt that why they call it a sport?

once ur using a bazooka its kinda pointless and it has been proven time and again the people who buy these weapons end up using them wrong.

and dont give me the "guns dont kill people, people kill people" sure with GUNS! if the norway guy had a knife how many would have he killed?

geez, on one side we have lefty who swing everyones way, and on other we have right wing gun nuts.

how about everyone stfu sit the Fuk down and think that although people can have gun to hunt they dont need an uzi , or an m60 -_-x

The Liberal and the Centre parties are lefty? You don't know much about politics, do you?
09:57 July 26, 2011 by J. L. Belmar
Poor Swedes! As usual, they cover the well after the child has drowned. Politicians to examine the law? Remember Ebbe Carlsson and his Anna Greta Lejon. They will revise the law after buying guns for themselves. Then and only ten. But, wait a minute. Swedes really believe that terrorists or mass murderers

need to buy weapons from a gun dealer. Thrt is naive. Illegal weapons are sold everywere in the whole damn world. Ask the taliban, the FARC, the IRA. Does Lars Tonneman really think that murderers and terrorists would look for a "license to kill"? The only one who has such a license is 007 James Bond and he did not get it neither in Sweden, nor in Norway. .

hehe, your arrogans is only amusing. :P
10:46 July 26, 2011 by occassional
They'd do much better to review the lax immigration laws that have allowed for things to precipitate to where they have. How many more alienated laser men and self proclaimed Knights will it take before they wake up from their naive slumber? Why does it have to take massacres and crises? Guns on their own do not kill. Alienated people have to pull their triggers.

I think it should be mandatory for adults that haven't been convicted of violent crimes to own a assault weapon, and carry a concealed weapon, both with proper training. And also teach kids in school firearm safety. If a criminal type thinks you might be armed, he might be less inclined to mess with you. If the adults at that camp in Norway would have been armed, at least they would have had a fighting chance to save some lives.

Many of these atrocities often take place in countries who allow power guns to be used for hunting animals .These guns are stricly controlled in Britain which dosen't have a hunting culture and the majority of British households do not contain guns to hunt animals to death . Of course some people will always get hold of illegal weapons but until this hunting culture of owning legal hunting guns is curtailed there will always be a likelihood of mad people being able to commit mass murder .
13:37 July 26, 2011 by Observour
After this we should also start legislations on how to take our guns out of the middle east where 1000s not 100s are killed

'People from the global south are humans too' can be the name of this legislation
14:04 July 26, 2011 by KungsholmenGuy
Belmar, the Virginia Tech massacre was carried out by someone who bought a handgun at a gun store. He had to fill out a form, which included the line: Are you mentally ill, to which he replied, 'No'. This is an example of a laughably weak gun ownership legislation.

The fact that there are ways to obtain guns illegally does not automatically imply that no effort should be made to be more careful with who can buy a gun, and what types of guns can be legally acquired at gun shops.
14:10 July 26, 2011 by rafa1981
For me, and following the beliefs of the first American founder presidents, firearms should be legal with restrictions.

Anyhow, it's an interesting debate with a lot of room for discussion.

What it's clear is that people on the top always want take profit in situations like that.

Would the Greek security forces be able to control an armed Greek population when they want to impose measures (the Greek rescue is a bailout for German banks, not for the Greeks) against the people's will as it is happening now? Who benefits of that?

This quote from #5 "Poor Swedes! As usual, they cover the well after the child has drowned." is full of ignorance. Several other countries do the same thing. It boils down to a lax attitude and not being pro-active to prevent the obvious. Granted situations like these come without warning, sometimes people just snap, but to say that Sweden is not going to put proper steps in place to prevent it from happening again, only after something like this has happened, well, just look at the World Trade Towers and what happened there. Like it or not firearms are everywhere. One must remember that it's the person not the gun who is the problem. Several people all over the world have firearms for sport, defense, fun. Ranging from semi-automatic, bolt action, tactical, full auto etc. It doesn't matter frankly, you must remember that it is the person yielding the weapon. One would question the BMW M5 owner, why do you need such a powerful car when you can get a small economy car. Again the answer is because he/she can, it's fun, etc. If only people would quit fighting over stupid things and just live life.

Totally agree with #8. If only a small amount of people on that Island would have carried legally obtained permitted firearms, they could have taken out the guy after he fired his first rounds. Potentially saving the lives of 60-70 children and young adults.
15:39 July 26, 2011 by millionmileman
Here we go again, Let's blame the Gun!"

The saddest aspect is that the Police took 90 minutes to reach the island and the boat took on water as they departed to leave for the interdiction. As much as Norway relishes in its dismal relationship with Israel their Police should beg forgiveness and go there for some serious remedial lessons in defense. There is no finer University on the planet for this kind of education.

Here in Wisconsin one of our own sheriffs just took such a course of which he was amazed at what he learned. Sadly I heard his report at a meeting full of liberals (me excluded) and they asked him on the side if he could kindly remove his gun and holster, before giving his report.

This is insanity because if law abiding citizens have guns then these murderous madmen can be taken down saving a lot of lives and grief. Bad people will always without any exception obtain a weapon but good defenseless people are just that. DEFENSELESS!
17:02 July 26, 2011 by Birger Johansson
Breivik did not have a sub-machine gun (kulsprutepistol).

He had a Ruger Mini-14 semi-automatic rifle (self-loaded rifle, to use old British terminology).

Since this rifle is mainly used for military purposes, Breivik would not have received a license in sweden to use it as a hunting rifle.

LOL. If anything we need less regulation on guns, not more. There's probably not a country in the western world with tougher gun laws than us. I'd like to be able to buy a gun for personal protection in my own home.
21:49 July 26, 2011 by Coalbanks
was it a sub-machine gun or a semi-automatic? Not the same item. Canada allows small calibre semi-autos with 10 round clip, large caliber with 3 round clip, few handguns are permitted, none with barrel length under 5 inches & no semi - auto handguns with more than 10 round clip. Full auotmatics are forbidden to civilians. Ruger Mini 14 is allowed as it is a small calibre sem-auto. Used by a home-grown killer in Montreal who murded more than 10 women one day in complaint of "feminism". Firearm legislation is a hot political item - at every election but soon dropped after the votes are counted.

Gun laws prevent crime the same way laws on the buying of beer prevents drunken drivers. What was your crime rates like 30 years ago when you laws were not as strict?? I woulld venture to say much the way they were here in the US.

Lol, love the white supremacist attitude. It's not about whacko people acquiring guns, it's about the dirty smelly immigrants erm... living here. That a human being cannot simply tolerate or handle such occurences in their mind shows that it is these racists are at fault, not "what they've been driven to".
12:44 July 31, 2011 by Earandur Lissesul
A firearm is an inanimate object, it takes a person to fire the thing. All the gun laws in the world won't stop the criminal obtaining them. Just look how many incidents with firearms have happened in the UK since, Hungerford and Dunblane. We have some of the strictest gun laws in the world. Even our Olympic pistol team has to train and keep their weapons abroad.
03:56 August 4, 2011 by nimshubur
In so far as I know, the Ruger Mini-14 is not used by any military in the world, and was not designed as a military weapon. It has no parts in common with any military weapon. Pull the trigger once, it fires once. It is not a machine gun, it is not an "assault rifle," whatever that is, and is a commonly-used hunting rifle in many jurisdictions.
