Former Swedish finance minister Eric Åsbrink has been given a new position as an advisor at the United States' largest investment bank Goldman Sachs.

Åsbrink, who served as finance minister from 1996-1999, will be employed to work with strategic guidance with business development opportunities in primarily Sweden and Scandinavia, according to a statement from the company.

Eric Åsbrink is the son of former Riksbank head Per Åsbrink.

He served as finance minister under two Social Democratic governments, led by Göran Persson and Ingvar Carlsson, and departed in 1999 following reports of a dispute with Persson.

The main point of conflict was widely reported to be the issue of a cap on pre-school fees. The so-called "maxtaxa" was presented by Göran Persson in the run up to the 1998 general election with several ministers kept in the dark about this costly reform.

Eric Åsbrink was informed the night before and the conflict with the prime minister never fully recovered.

Since leaving the government, Åsbrink has been engaged as chairperson of the Swedish Budo & Martial Arts Federation (Svenska Budo & Kampsportsförbundet).

He is currently employed as chairperson of pensions firm Alecta and The Stockholm School of Economics (Handelshögskolan). He is also a member of the Swedish Fiscal Policy Council (Finanspolitiskarådet).

That appointment clears up what the social democrats think of ordinary people and the social safety net in Sweden.

If it wasn't clear who owns what now it is.

One of the most important news on the whole newspaper.

Everyday it passes I strongly believe that we live in a dictatorship with cool tags for bad sounding words.

I saw the documentary 'Inside Job' last evening. Sweden was mentioned as country that joined others in favor of limiting executive compensation. That was after the financial bubble burst -before Asbrick's time. I'm guessing Asbrick does not share the same philosophy.

I'm so tired of the greed and arrogance of these bankers, these self-styled overlords of planet Earth. I'd like to give them a permanent wedgie.
