Gonorrhoea on the rise in Stockholm: report

Published: 31 Jul 11 10:13 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/35260/20110731/

A recipe of summer fun, a little sun, and unprotected sex have brought a spike in the number of cases of gonorrhoea in Stockholm, according to new statistics from the Stockholm Disease Control (Smittskydd Stockholm).

While the numbers of chlamydia and syphilis cases hold a steady line, mid-year statistics reveal that the number of gonorrhoea cases in the capital are escalating.

”Gonorrhoea has gone up a bit in recent years. It has probably spread a bit more in the heterosexual and youth groups,” Björn Eriksson, a deputy medic with disease control centre, told newspaper Dagens Nyheter (DN).

There have been 245 cases recorded so far this year, compared to 254 cases in total during 2009 and 430 in 2010.

The same reports show that more than 4,000 people have been infected with chlamydia to date this year. Last year totalled about 8,950, which is a likely total for 2011, said Eriksson.

”People go and get tested after the summer in September and then the numbers go up,” he added.

In a joint effort, Stockholm’s County Council teamed up with Vårdguiden, the Stockholm Health Care Guide, and the main hospital in Södermalm, Södersjukhuset, in March 2010 to launch a project for chlamydia home-tests.

A free test kit can be ordered online from Mina vårdkontakter, an e-service for healthcare requests. A simple test is then done at home and sent in for testing. A few days later, results are available on the Internet.

”What we see is that we can detect it better here, especially with young guys who might not otherwise have tested themselves without this chance,” spokesperson for the Health Board Management in Stockholm Hanna Holmquist Karlsson told DN.

About 250 people a week are conducting the home tests through Vårdguiden, with more than 16,000 people tested since the project began.

Of the administered tests, about six percent have been diagnosed with chlamydia.

I suppose this is the outcome of the good sex education that is taught to all Swedish children as discussed on a previous thread? The paradoxes in this country are just too much sometimes. The conditioning of the people is so strong here that they are unable to see for themselves. They only see what they are told and cannot come to conclusions from their own observations.

Sadly people here think safe sex means that the girl uses the pill. Unfortunately people here don't think condoms are important when having one night stands. The government really needs to teach the importance of condom use for prevention in STDs and unwanted pregnancies.

My swedes' teenaged cousin is about to have her 2nd abortion. Seriously when are her parents going to say something about using a condom.
10:56 July 31, 2011 by Polarbear
@Tennin

You bring up an important point. Many use the day after pill for safe sex (birth control) as well.
11:42 July 31, 2011 by byke
That's a statistic that some Swedish women may find hard to swallow.
11:53 July 31, 2011 by dtrocilo
Swedes are so arrogant and think that they've got everything right. Therefore they tend to think that Sweden is the only place in the world where you can have unsafe sex and won't get anything. Because, you know, these diseases belong to the third-world...
12:35 July 31, 2011 by Grokh
at least they are not teaching abstinense which led united states to be the number one teen pregnancy in the world with twice as the follow up slovakia lol

and how can people criticize swedish sexual education when only about 500 people caught ghonorrea in a 10 million people country ? id say its a bloody sucess , not to mention some of those people might not have gotten swedish education so there you have it then.
15:32 July 31, 2011 by kenny8076
@Grokh...... uummm where and in what state were you taught abstinence? In my sex ed class in highschool we were NEVER taught that. We learned about STD's how to put a condom on a cucumber, about all the different condoms, pure pressure, pregnancy..... so where did you hear this garbage you spread? And please dont say a catholic school!!

and your numbers game is EXACTLY what us Americans are always saying..... hypothetically we might have 5,000,000 people have herpes...... but that is out of 310,000,000 people....... i think our country and our numbers are too big for swedes, they cant understand it or grasp it, most dont have a clue California alone is bigger than Sweden, of coarse we will have more of everything....... not rocket science

Gotta say, I love the picture of the happy couple holding hands. So that's how a person contracts gonorrhea! I promise I will never hold my girl's hand again without wearing a glove.

And, more importantly, if there is more chlamydia, and more gonorrhea, then there must be more HIV. Sad, but true.

What ever happened to, "No Glove, No Love" ?
22:20 July 31, 2011 by wxman
You want truly safe sex? Both partners practice monogamy all the time. End of problem.
23:26 July 31, 2011 by repat_xpat
@wxman. Monogamy has worked for my wife and I for over 20 years. No STD's here.

Condoms are better than nothing, but 20% of people who use them for birth control end up with pregnancies. Our second son was conceived while using a condom. If a woman can only get pregenant 1 week a month, and 20% of couples using condoms end up pregnant, what is the true effectivness against STDs?

Again, don't be stupid and not use one, but its better to be smart and be monogamous. This is the truth that neither U.S. nor Swedish schools teach.

@kenny8076

Sex education in the United States is taught in two main forms: comprehensive and abstinence-only. Comprehensive sex education covers abstinence as a positive choice, but also teaches the benefits of contraception and the avoidance of sexually transmitted diseases between sexually active individuals. Abstinence-only sex education emphasizes abstinence from sex prior to marriage and rejects methods such as contraception.

im not swede , nor american. usa is the teen pregnancy country in the world and abstinence only is taught on many schools there thanks to religious lobby.

as for my numbers they are more directed at stupid religious people who criticize teaching kids about sex in schools to prevent STDs is immoral.

Careful Grokh...the numbers are differently calculated between Europe and the US:

You cannot teach anything in Sweden that the Swedes do not know better. Safe sex means to them having sex where no one can see them. What is a condom? The majority think it is a funny balloon that you have to put in your cucumber after having sex with a girl, any, who will have one more child out of marriage. Teaching sex campaings is nothing else but another jippo the government has for letting the nincompoop voters know that they are doing something important.

I one of the two got ghonorrea is because the other already had it. Everthing is reduced to the Swedish way of thinking: "I am above that. I am a viking and nothing will happen to me". Sorry, but that is the naked truth.
10:47 August 1, 2011 by conboy
The Swedes know it all until they mess up then they descend into sullen silence the price of arrogance and selfishness perhaps?
