Vilnius mayor crushes car in wild tank ride for Swedish TV show

The mayor of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius has has been filmed driving an armoured vehicle over a parked car as both a prank for a Swedish TV show, and as a blunt warning to drivers to observe the city's regulations.

The film was recorded in connection with the popular Swedish TV show "99 things to do before you die" hosted by comic duo Erik and Mackan.

The episode features Mayor Arturas Zuokas, who has been described as a "militant cyclist", riding in the tank together with Erik and Mackan towards a parked car.

The armoured vehicle is then driven over the car, crushing it in the process and drawing shock and consternation from its owner, who is a witness to the demise of vehicle from a nearby pavement.

"In my profession, you have to have a sense of humour," Zuokas explained to the camera.

The mayor continued to explained that a "tank was the best option" to solve the problem of luxury car owners who he argues consider themselves above the law.

"That's what happens when you park illegally," Zuokas declared after the Mercedes car was demolished.

The owner of the vehicle is then told by the mayor that "next time park your car legally", with the white-suited driver seemingly in sheepish agreement.

The film ends with the mayor sweeping away glass splinters from the road and cycling down the road on his bicycle.

The City of Vilnius official website currently features the film as a warning to all those tempted to take a chance and park their cars illegally.

The show is broadcast on Viasat owned TV6 and among the other antics deemed worthy of "doing before you die" have included featuring on a US chat show, getting close up and personal with great white sharks, and manning the controls of a helicopter.

The Local's attempts to contact TV6 and the show's production company OTW Media for a comment on Thursday were unsuccessful.

"The film ends with the mayor sweeping away glass splinters from the road and cycling done the road on his bicycle."

I think it is "Cycling down the road on his bicycle"

As Lithuanian cars are left all over the place in Stockholm and they never pay parking fee's, Perhaps they should do the same to a Lithuanian registered car in Stockholm. Instead of an armoured car running over it, I think a big Bofors gun would be more spectacular.

Car drivers with sense of humor must be waiting for him to get off the bike zone someday.

They should roll this out in Ireland and the UK.

Good solution for these who got their driving licence improperly. Learned the rule and obey it unless there are fatal danger or extreme emergency.

cool give this man a Tank so he can run over people who think they are above the law ;D

They should do that to Illegally parked cars here. Cars are parked everywhere around here. They don't care about parking lines or areas, they'll park where they see fit. Or the city should start towing cars, it's great money for the kommun, and it'll make people not be jerks and park whereever they feel.

How can it be legal to purposefully and unnecessarily destroy a car?
13:32 August 4, 2011 by RitaPita
Fairly certain that this had nothing to do with Swedish television. All other news sites are explaining it as just a type of advert to prevent illegal parking.

Swedish tv just happened to be there and notified about the prank. Don't make it sound like a collaboration!
14:04 August 4, 2011 by Grindsprint
RitaPita, I don´t understand your comment... I mean, you are just assuming that there was no collaboration. what do you actually know?
00:24 August 5, 2011 by Smallnose
The ad shows how strong a Mercedes is? The roof only has a minor dent?
12:14 August 5, 2011 by RitaPita
Also, the mayor's office confirmed that it was all set up. The car was bought out before the incident. Honestly The Local... DO your research!!! You can't keep posting half-news.

@ Grindsprint

I got my information from about 5-6 other media sources who say otherwise.

If they aren't even able to get the story right, then what's to say they aren't stretching the truth a little bit also?
