Swedish lesbians forced to pay more for sperm

Artificial insemination costs vary widely across Sweden, forcing some same-sex couples to pay significantly more than heterosexual couples who save thousands of kronor by bringing their own sperm.

“We think that it is discriminatory that there are different prices for insemination,” Ulrika Westerlund of the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (Riksförbundet för homosexuellas, bisexuellas och transpersoners rättigheter - RFSL) said to the Aftonbladet daily.

Lesbian couples gained the right six years ago to undergo artificial insemination at Swedish clinics.

In some counties the couples however have to pay for the procedure themselves. In Västmanland, for example, couples are obliged to fork up 12,000 kronor ($1,850). The going rate for the same procedure for a heterosexual couple is meanwhile a more modest 300 kronor.

Karin Lundström, the Västmanland county health care official, said to news agency TT that the reason behind the price span is the cost of procuring donated sperm, rendering the procedure more expensive for lesbians.

“It costs 12,000 kronor for anyone using a donor. Of course, for lesbians there will always be a donor, but we are talking about actual costs. That’s why it costs more,” she told TT.

But Ulrika Westerlund argues that the treatment is the same regardless of the sperm's origin and thus the cost should be the same. Furthermore, she points out, some counties elect not to make a distinction between those who bring their own sperm and those who obtain it from a donor.

RFSL would like to see a development of uniform regulations which apply across the country.

“But that would be complicated and would require the state to go in and regulate. However, we think that the rules should at least be the same within the county council; as many attempts and the same fees regardless of whether it is a same–sex or a heterosexual couple,” Westerlund said to the newspaper.

But according to the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (Sveriges Kommuner och Landsting – SKL) this is not a medical problem and therefore it is up to the individual counties to decide.

I'll donate for free if I can do it for these couples in the traditional way.

The Local news must you lay emphasis on the increasing cost implication of insemination for swedish lesbians? Freedom has a price, what frees one man can enslave another. Everyone has the right to choose but no one has the right to choose from the consequencies of his or her chosen. If the cost increases tomorrow to 100,000 kronor let them pay for it. In real life do we isolate men from women? If their mothers were lesbians the existence of the so called lesbians today would have ended up as nightmare. Nonsense.

Why pay for something obtainable for free (or a drink at the pub at least)

yes we need to screen this procedure carefully so we don't breed the ugly nasty lesbians (we got enough of that flavour already)

perhaps we can all stand back and blow into a cup till it is full give it a stir and then let evolution choose since they seem to like that idea, solves the anonymity issues too! free if you take the lotto option! charge them more for being picky! double the price!

Artificial insemination should not be covered by the state no matter what your sexual orientation is. That's my opinion. Not being able to get pregnant is not a disease, it's just an unfortunate thing that sometimes happen. Not something we should waste tax money on as far as I'm concerned. But if we do, obviously sexual orientation should not be an issue.

Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Romans 1:22-32

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

A non story. The facts could also be reported as hetrosexual couples, who cannot provide their own sperm, are being discriminated against. They have to pay 12000kr for insemination whilst lesbian couples, who bring their own sperm, are charged only 300kr.

The difference in cost is because it costs money to harvest and store the sperm.

Why not charge everyone 12000kr and subsidise the treatment of real illnesses?
