Politicians to blame for far right growth: Mankell

Published: 10 Aug 11 15:08 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/35466/20110810/

Swedish bestselling author and human rights activist Henning Mankell said in an interview on UK television on Monday that mainstream politicians shoulder the responsibility for the rise of the far right.

Interviewed on the BBC news show Hardtalk, Mankell told journalist Tim Franks that the terror attacks in Norway have shown us that any religion can be hijacked and used a reason for terrorism by a sick mind.

“Terrorism will now always be connected to people that are not only ‘kidnapping’ Islam but Christianity or any other religion,” Mankell told the BBC.

Mankell also said he is concerned about people speaking about Anders Behring Breivik, responsible for the bombing and massacre in Norway in July, as an “evil person”.

“No child is born evil. Evil circumstances are always surrounding evil actions. If we start talking of evil people we go back 500 years in time.” Mankell said.

Mankell also said that Behring Breivik is living in an imaginary world where he believes himself to be a soldier at war, demanding to be allowed to dress in uniform in court.

He also said he believes that examinations will show Behring Brevik to be severely mentally disturbed.

The BBC asked him how concerned the rest of the world should be of the rise of the far right in Scandinavia.

“We should be concerned but we should also be realistic. So far the ultra extreme right wing hasn’t had such a profound impact in Scandinavian society. But we will have to see to that they will not grow too much,” Mankell responded.

However, Mankell blames the mainstream politicians for the increase in support for the far right in the region.

“They have taken the attitude ‘we will ignore them – we won’t discuss with them’ and that to me is completely wrong. You have to take the dialogue with them otherwise they will be left to grow,” Mankell told the BBC.

He might be a great writer but he is a Communist and it is Mankel and his communist friends who are responsible for the rise of the right. By trying to force their communist sick ideology on the public who reject it they make it easy for the right to get stronger. Communism is as sick as Nazism.they both are violent racist ideologies

Typical that the bleeding heart liberal socialist BBC give airtime to this nobody. Another big mouth commie spurting out garbage. There really isn't that much difference between the extreme left and extreme right (well what most people call the extreme right wing). Commies and Nazis are all just socialist at heart. (Just one lot are Nationalists and the others Internationalists. All worthless scum.)

Isn't this geezer off to deliver some more 'humanitarian assistance' to his terrorist mates in Hamas soon?

"They have taken the attitude 'we will ignore them - we won't discuss with them' and that to me is completely wrong. You have to take the dialogue with them otherwise they will be left to grow,"

Like him or not, he's 100% right with this statement.

As long as the other political groups in Sweden continue to ignore them, refuse to talk to or work with them and refuse to acknowledge the Swedish people that voted for them, their support will continue to rise.

I hold Mankell responsible for the bombing in Norway. He supports violent resistance.

Is it really OK for Hamas to murder Israeli children, but abhorrent for Breivik to murder Norwegian children? Really???

Repeat after me, Mankell: All violence is wrong.

Violence against Palestinians is wrong.

Violence against Israelis is wrong.

Violence against Norwegians is wrong.

There will never be peace through violence.

As shown when the BNP came onTo Question TIme on the BBC, their arguments fell apart. It was fun to watch! We know that the vote for Extreme right tends to be a protest vote against politicians who DO NOT listen.

Unfortunayely, there is the odd nuttet who takes it too far and is often a sign if pychotic behaviour or low intelligence or both. That you will unlikely stop, but you could reduce fanning the fire that feeds their madness.

Human rights activist? HA HA HA HA !!! The only "people" who have rights in his fantasy world are the Palistinians.

Tibetans, Sudanese, Burmese, Zimbabwean, Venezuelan, Cuban and other victims of oppression all deserve what they get in the view of this sordid stalinist. As for his views on jews . . . .

By the way, has anybody ever asked himself why exactly this guy lives in Mozambique?

I have a strong dislike of the dumbed down culture which presumes that if a person is celebrated in one area be as an Hollywood actor, sportsman, musician, or as in Mankell's case an author, they deserve a special hearing in the political arena as well.

Mankell's brain is pickled and warped. It's what allows him to write nasty thrillers. But it doesn't make him a wise political commentator, and he shouldn't be granted special treatment to air his political views based on his fiction.

What is wrong you TL? My post were I write that Mankell is quite clever for making media like BBC comment his commie thoughts was deleted. Hope it does not happen again.

Human rights activist Henning Mankell is nothing more than a marketing rights activist. He is very clever when using media and nincompoops to promote his twisted ideas.

He is certainly not a wise political commentator (planet_sweden) and I agree he should not be granted any special treatment at all.

Somethimes he is on the right, sometimes he is on the left, but in the majority of the cases, he is in the wishy-washy line. Are we going to keep on debating about his schizophrenia?

By now, we all should know what happen in Norway and who the guilty ones are. So, Mankell can say whatever he wants, he will certainly not change the truth behind the events.
21:29 August 10, 2011 by Rick Methven
"Are we going to keep on debating about his schizophrenia?"

maybe we should discuss your schizophrenia. Which currently seems much more appropriate
21:34 August 10, 2011 by here for the summer
In his youth Mankell was a left-wing political activist and a strong opponent of the Vietnam War, South African apartheid and Portugal's colonial war in Mozambique. In the 1970s Mankell moved from Sweden to Norway and lived with a Norwegian woman who was a member of the Maoist Communist Labor Party of Norway. Mankell took part in the party's activities but did not join the party.[1]

Thanks for the information. Very enlightening. Did not he join Jack Nicholsson in the "Cuckoo's Nest"? and was enjoying the forking, forking with Louise Fletcher (Nurse Ratched), Rick Tracy's mother?

Mostly sensible comments from Mankell although I think dialogue is too good for the fascist scum of the SD. Rather they need to be driven off the streets through the sustained, militant action of all genuine left-wingers and anti-racists. It's nice to think that you can defeat them simply through polite debate but it hasn't worked in Denmark and probably won't in Sweden either.
09:34 August 11, 2011 by sruk
"communist sick ideology" - that is the point Breivik wanted to make by killing Young Labour kids (interesting that this little fact was almost universally misreported by the media..you assume that the camp was just a group of kids having a fun !!).

So "The Grand Master" and "tglan" i can see which side of the argument you quietly supporting "Nudge, Nudge, wink wink, Say no more"

I did not see the interview, but if you don't agree with the above listed Mankels statements then there is no doubt that you are supporting wrong side..

BTW it is historically well known that most of the centre-right parties always played a dirty game with the far right...

I agree with Mankell that "mainstream" politicians are wrong to openly discourage democracy by attempting to ignore or shot out right-wing political parties.

However, I disagree with his underlying assumption that the growth of right-wing political parties is somehow intuitively "wrong." That strikes me as fundamentally anti-democratic.

In a true democracy, all political views must be allowed to grow and flourish. If there is a significant natural, grassroots growth of right-wing political parties (or any other political party) then ipso facto there is a reason for it that cannot and should not be ignored.

You can't just go around arbitrarily and capriciously pretending that the views of any one political party don't "really" count.

If you follow me.

You are not talking about Sweden, or are you? Because if you do, you are completely wrong. We are in a country where all political views are allowed, specially by the Moderates and the Social Democrats, as seen prior to the last elections, during the elections and after the elections. These political parties, including the Left (read commie, please) and the Green, opened their minds to listen to what Jimmy Åkesson had to say.

Fredrik Reinfeldt was the most accesible to what the SD wanted to achieve and he made the media available to Åkesson. What happened after the elections is incomprehensible, because the views of the SD political party were taken into account.
23:06 August 11, 2011 by Monitor Lizard
I was referring specifically to this article and Mr. Mankell's views expressed therein.

I disagree with his apparent assumption that it is somehow "wrong" that there should be a growth in right-wing political parties. Who is he to make such a judgement?

That would be like couching everything you say in the assumption that centrist political parties are "wrong" and we should all endeavor to minimize the impact of centrist political parties on society because they are too wishy-washy about everything. Or something like that.

I also don't care for the way the headline is worded: "Politicians to blame for far right growth: Mankell"

It is a bit of a loaded statement. What's wrong with "far right growth"? Why exactly is the "far right" not allowed to grow?

Sounds like "Dirty livestock to blame for fecal coliform bacteria growth"

A more objective title for the article could have stated: "Mankell claims far right growth potentially harmful"

Then it would be put in the context that it is only Mr. Mankell's OPINION, and not necessarily fact, and not also the opinion of the reporting news source.

Sweden today and it's politicians are reminiscent of the weak kneed fools who governed Weimar Germany prior to the nazi take over. No one takes responsibility for anything as the establishment stumbles from failed experiment to failed experiment. No wonder Åkesson and his costumed brown shirts are licking their lips with anticipation our only hope is that they will prove to be just as corruptable as their mainstream colleagues. There have already been a number of incidents which indicate that they are being enmeshed in the system amusing really. There was a great deal of wisdom in Mankells analysis if one chooses to think about what he said. By the way the SD and their nazi pals are the ones who want an end to free speech make no mistake about that!
