Medical 'marijuana' coming to Sweden

Doctors in Sweden may soon be writing prescriptions for cannabis, as the Swedish Medical Products agency (Läkemedelsverket) is close to approving a new cannabis-based mouth spray aimed at patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS).

However, according to specialist Hans Sjögren at the agency, the spray won’t give users a high.

“To get high on cannabis you need a rather large concentration which you get if you smoke the substance or ingest higher doses. This is a relatively low concentration. You won’t get a kick from it,” he told Sveriges Radio (SR)

People suffering from MS, which damages the brain and the central nervous system, often experience problems with stiffness and muscle cramps.

The spray, which is used under the tongue, has been proved to be successful in alleviating MS symptoms by a series of medical studies.

The cannabis spray is already available in the UK and Spain. Earlier this year it was approved by agencies in Germany and Denmark.

It is not strictly illegal today to prescribe medicinal cannabis in Sweden but it is a lengthy and complicated process.

The doctor has to apply for a special permit from the Medical Products Agency and if approved the closest pharmacy has to arrange a special import.

According to SR, the agency receives about fifty applications a year, a number that reflects how many people in Sweden are actually prescribed the substance.

In the US doctors have been able to prescribe marijuana to people suffering from depression, anxiety or chronic pain.

According to the company supplying the spray, the aim is to have it hit Swedish pharmacy shelves before the year is out.

Medical marijuana aka Marinol has been widely used in the USA to treat cancer patients, and having working in a Cancer clinic for many years, this medicine is helpful to those who are suffering from cancer and close to death. Aside from all the joking here, it should be approved to help those who are in excruciating pain by get some relief from its effects.

Why not legalize normal marijuana? O wait, then the big pharma companies can't make money from it.

I mean look at Sweden and the US. Everybody know enormous quantities of cocaine are used by the people who can afford it. Why not give the normal guy his fun?

A-pot-ek.....

It will be interesting to see what side effects, or as the industry calls them 'contraindications', are listed for medical marijuana - given the remarkably low incidence of problems among non medical users.

I don't see why the laws are so harsh here for marijuana. Tobacco and alcohol are far worse. I would rather be around a bunch of stoners than drunks.

Hurry up and make it legal so the government can tax the crap out of it and better this country.

It's about damn time! Wise up world pot is not the devil! It can help a lot of people!

Wish they would legalize marijunana altogether with a systembolaget kind of construction so people pay high tax on it. Instead they could release the monopoly on liquor and allow it be sold in supermarkets. It would be a nice income boost for the government, who could then reduce taxes.

i say the side effects are far less than having MS

Banning the use of marijuana has been one of the most stupid laws ever passed.

This is a first step into the 21st century for Sweden with their pot laws

Medical prescriptions for smoking cannibis have been available in Canada since 2000. In a recent poll 53% of Canuks feel that it should be legalized while a significant majority feel it should be decriminalized. Still, we now have an idiot prime minister and conservative government that want to increase penalties for the dealers.

Harvard and Madrid universities have reported in studies that compounds called cannabinoids (THC and CBD) found in the cannabis plant destroy cancer cells. These studies hardly got any media coverage and Pharma companies are not interested in researching this further with humans as they stand to lose billions of dollars if it turns out that a plant which they can't patent and a person could grow at home, extract the oil very easily and self medicate can cure cancer. A biochemist cancer researcher from USA had prostate cancer and treated himself with this oil for 6 months and he cured himself without any other medical treatment. Google 'Dennis hill cancer'. Many people who have had terminal cancer have used raw cannabis oil and no longer have cancer in their bodies. It's not just an anti-nausea medication; these cannabinoids are actually shutting down cancerous cells. Watch the documentaries 'what if cannabis cured cancer' and 'run from the cure' on youtube

How many die every year from cigarettes? How many die every year from alcohol? How many fights have been from alcohol? And marijuana is illegal. Go figure. And not only the fact that cigarettes and alcohol are 100 times worse than marijuana. But marijuana can help with sleep, eating disorders, nausea, pain, stress and mental health. So where is the logic. People who think marijuana is bad are extremely ill informed or refuse to accept it no matter what the scientists say.
