Anna Lindh killer breaks silence over murder

The man convicted of the 2003 murder of Swedish foreign minister Anna Lindh, Mijailo Mijailovic, has finally spoken out about the case after eight years in prison.

The 32-year-old Mijailovic admitted in an extensive interview with Expressen newspaper on Sunday that he had not planned the assassination but did it on impulse after seeing the foreign minister at the time outside the NK department store in Stockholm.

He said he then followed her around several stories of the shop on September 10th, 2003, before the fatal stabbing incident which rocked society and changed Swedish politics.

High on the hypnotic drug Flunitrazepam at the time, Mijailovic told how he tracked down Lindh and eventually caught up with her and stabbed her at a Filippa K concession.

”I just went up, took out the knife and it happened there. It happened so fast. I remember that the atmosphere was chaotic, very crowded, and someone yelled catch him. I remember that there was a lot of shouting," Mijailovic told the newspaper, recalling the incident

Despite the attack happening in a crowded shop in broad daylight, Mijailovic managed to flee the scene, much to his surprise.

”I went slowly at first, then when I left through the side entrance, the same one I took on the way in. Then I threw the knife in a trash can.....Then I started running again. I took a taxi at Dramaten Theatre," he said.

"I saw police cars, so it was a bit strange that they did not catch me in town.....Later I sobered up in the woods in Södertalje, where I threw away the clothes. I sat there in the woods and thought: This is my last taste of freedom.”

Mijailovic expressed little sign of remorse during the trial and gave few clues as to his motives.

In the interview he denied that it was motivated by Lindh’s statements over the NATO bombings of Serbia, stating that it had been a coincidence it was Lindh he saw, and that he had previously considered attacking Lars Leijonborg of the Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) a week before the Lindh murder.

”I felt hatred of politicians, both Swedish and Serbian. I blamed all my own failures on politicians,” he told Expressen.

”In retrospect, I realise that it was weak to blame their own failures of politicians. It's not a politicians fault that things go wrong for people in life,” he adds.

Later in the interview Mijailovic admitted that he had made up his defence line about hearing voices as a ploy to plead insanity and thereby escape a sentence in a normal prison.

Mijailovic accepts that he will most likely never be released and is prepared for his fate.

”I cannot be forgiven for everything. I will go to hell, when the time comes,” the 32-yer-old concluded.

Its taken him seven years to accept that? Few things are more appalling than a defenceless woman out shopping, and being slashed with a knife by this nutter!!

This guy is still in jail after eight years? What's become of the Swedish criminal justice system?

Remember that hysterical Swedish risk aversion lent Mijailovic a helping hand. As per instructions, the crew of the first ambulance on the scene waited outside NK for minutes for police protection to arrive, whilst hundreds of shoppers milled around inside unmolested.

Yeah, Lindh would definitely have landed a plum UN job. In a TV interview after her appointment as secretary of state, she admitted that she never read foreign newpapers, magazines, or other publications. With credentials like that, she would have been guaranteed a top-level position.

Interesting politician. Not reading foreign newspapers and still secretary of State? (Later Foreign Minister)

why is it important for Expressen or any other media to interview this fellow? i think that he should not be given a voice nor permitted to torment Lindh's family from his prison cell. he seeks to blame his action on medication whilst admitting that a week prior, he had planned on attacking someone else. he doesn't deserve our sympathy neither does he deserve column space in the press.

The former US secretary of State Colin Powell said that the three things he liked most about Sweden were: the group ABBA, Volvos ... and Anna Lind. She replied in mock horror, "What, Colin? I am only in 3rd place?"

It's quite clear this man is mentally ill. Whether it was caused by his upbringing or some other events in his life I don't know. One aspect of politician's life in Sweden I admire was the freedom they had to go about which unfortunately changed with murder of Olaf Palme and Anna Lind.

1)journalists are working for political police (the same like some people who post comments here) which is mixed in his case, so, it is strange that he gave interview for expressen, there is some hidden motivation behind his interview. I suppose his motivation is visible in his statement that "politicans are not responsible for bad life of people", it means again he tried to speak what government would like to hear, it means he tried to represent himself like "corrected in the prison" so there is no more reason to sit in the prison. of course, he will not succeed, his life is result of racism and racism is not gone. As we see, Uppsala is burnt and France was burnt and Denmark several times, by immigrants who are discriminated. Mijailovic is just one of many who dared to do something.

2)Politicians are responsible for bad or good life of people, any idiot understand so much, in other case, people would not go to elections. who is head in the house/company/state, he/she is responsible for situation in the house/company/state.

Yes, they should do something. They should protect their friendly and beautiful country and their people from having to encounter persons like you.

"He is now faced with the true fact of eternity in Hell......"

Since "hell" is neither provable nor testable, it is hypothetical that he may or may not go there. It is impossible to know. Hell is a religious concept anyway. Its is preferable that he pay for his crime in this life.......

I could never understand why, when it seems that half the Swedish male population between 18 and 30 are security guards , that one was not assigned to her when she was in the store.

Isn't is amazing how some random mental case can just happen to randomly stab an internationally influential politician to death?

I mean of all the people in a large city like Stockholm who this guy might have killed he had to go and stab one of the only European politicians to have the balls to speak out against post 9/11 US foreign policy in the middle east and not some random passer-by in his neighbourhood. I'll say it again: Amazing!

I cannot explain everything fully other than my passions were destroyed when l learned of the terrible basic daylight murder of someone from a land l was in love with.

Anna was loved by her compatriots. She was at Uppsala university during the same years l had begun to feel something wonderful about such a gorgeous part of the world. Thanks Miajailo for "`!%;;;ing everything up.

Rather than getting involved it appears it is easier to take someone's life away. The incident had a massive impact on people world wide.

Without fiction we would be forced to accept the facts. Without the writers and poets she would be dead.
