Swedish 60-year-old convicted of filesharing

An Uppsala resident has been convicted of file sharing after having downloaded 2,880 songs from the internet, according to reports in Swedish media.

The 60-year-old was given a suspended sentence and a 10,000 kronor ($1,570) fine for downloading 2,880 songs from the internet using the file sharing program Direct Connect, according to daily newspaper Aftonbladet.

Current regulations in Sweden limits police to being allowed to demand traffic information from internet suppliers in cases where a prison sentence is a possible outcome of a conviction.

This case therefore sets an interesting precedent, said prosecutor Henrik Rasmusson.

"A suspended sentence corresponds to prison time. Therefore, we now know that if anyone has been sharing files to the same extent as the 60-year-old, we can demand their information from suppliers," said Rasmusson to Aftonbladet.

Without the man's confession, he might have walked away scot-free, as police only had a list of the songs he allegedly downloaded, according to the paper.

"If he hadn't confessed, the evidence would've been shaky. We haven't searched his house, because it was two years since the songs were downloaded," said Rasmusson to Aftonbladet.

Precise ! I dont think he shared 2880 songs deliberately or intentionally......for sure, Born This Way must be there

Sweden is a gangsters parasidse. They keep busy with file sharing kids and seniors while the dope dealers, armed robbers, and extortionists do as they please. Hmmm...maybe I'm in the wrong business?!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record...........

Abuse the elderly, thats fine. Medical malpractice, no investigation, no charges, no problem. Police stealing from citizens, no charges laid...it's all cool.

BUT!..... share a song or save a hedgehog and look out! Prison here you come.

is it only in Sweden that the honest are punished and the criminals go free?

You are not the only one who is in the wrong business. Me too!

It is Kafkanian what happens in this country. They chase everybody but bandits. They spend money in corrupted countries and let poor Swedes to starve, the politicians to lie and the government to cheat.

And yes, dammen! This is the country where it does not pay to be honest because you wind up being incarcerated.

And as Jacquelineee says: "Abuse the elderly, that's fine. Medical malpractice, no investigation, no charges, no problem. Police stealing from citizens, no charges laid...it's all cool.

"BUT!..... share a song or save a hedgehog and look out! Prison here you come."

Good Lord. What shall I do? I downloaded "You are the Top" from Cole Porter. Knock, knock, knock, the police is knocking at my door.

The truth behind this, as my Swedish wife pointed out, is that by doing this type of wrongdoings, the statistics of resolved crimes in Sweden will show an improvement, at the cost

I'm not intimidated by headlines like this one. I will keep downloading. And if everyone keeps doing it, it's not a crime. It's like the prohibition in the USA during the 1930s. And despite statements from the record companies, music won't die because of it. Real musicians will always make good music, disregarding if they get rich doing or not. Just like they did before the record industry came along and made music a business.

Interesting how nobody has pointed out yet that this is even if you get busted worth it? The average cost per song is $0,55, I'm fairly sure that's well under the average cost per song in stores such as iTunes.

It's also highly entertaining to see the flaws behind all this being pointed out, so if you get caught, don't confess and it's all good?

Well, the organized crime syndicate that operates with impunity in my neighborhood of Hisingen Backa is surely shaking in their boots now!

Just make file sharing legal again!!! So an older man is probably lonely and downloaded. Those recording "artists" have made their money.
21:01 September 1, 2011 by colombianska_tjej
In fact, is not the artists who get affected (well, only in a minor extent) but the records company. They lose a lot of money when we prefer to download instead of buying in their stores, so they conveniently made downloading illegal.

And just for the case, If they ever look at my computer, for sure I'll end up in jail, as I barely have legal stuff.

So the 60 yo who downloaded material some 2 years ago presumably for his own private use gets convicted of "file sharing" while the 15 yo who recently downloaded material and was apparently passing them out to his school friends gets acquitted of "file sharing".

Am I the only one missing the apparent double standards operating here?
