Kitten straddles gas tank in 70-km ride of terror

When Kristina Karlsson arrived back from work on Monday afternoon she found her car was occupied by an unusual stowaway.

While driving she had heard unusual sounds from the inside of the car and arriving at her home in Söderbärke, in central Sweden, she suspected there may have been an animal hiding somewhere in the vehicle's body.

But after an extended but fruitless search, which even involved removing the wheels of the car, Karlsson decided to take the car to her autoshop some 30 kilometres away.

"I drove really carefully and I felt I had no choice," Karlsson told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Upon arrival, the mechanics struggled to remove the wheels and loosen the car’s gas tank.

There they found the curled up, dirty little kitten clinging to the tank.

"But it sat there safe and protected in a corner behind the gas tank," said Karlsson.

The mechanics quickly removed the terrified animal and fed it some milk after which it appeared to calm down.

Despite several car journeys totaling an estimated 70 kilometres, the month-old kitten was found to be completely unharmed and Karlsson subsequently found it a home with one of her colleagues.

“She was a little shaky and scared the first day,” the cat's new owner, Marie Lundqvist told The Local.

“But now the little rascal is very lively," she said.

Lundqvist is now taking suggestions at work to give the young cat a proper name, and at the moment she's leaning towards Kajsa Kavat, the name of a character from a popular children's book by renowned Swedish children's author Astrid Lindgren about a plucky orphan girl who grows up under the care of an elderly lady.

“It was quite plucky to get through this ordeal,” said Lundqvist.

And as we are in Europe the word is petrol not 'gas'.
20:34 September 2, 2011 by Farugia
@spy.

Ah, those Britons who think they can tell everyone how to speak English ...

It's 'petrol', not gas in British English. But in continental Europe, they say 'gas", like the rest of the world.

It's Sweden's News In American !
00:50 September 3, 2011 by hassaan
What kind of media is this?? Is this very important news to publish on?? I think there are a lot of important issues all over the world to publish and to make the people aware of them.
02:50 September 3, 2011 by anonymous4
Finally an article published that is of interest. We are dealing with far too much bad news. What a heart touching story!
07:22 September 3, 2011 by rybo1
How did the kitten get in that position? Seems to me that a perverted cat hater put the creature in that position. Question: How can it be curled up and clinging at the same time?
07:48 September 3, 2011 by StockholmSam
Hassan, it is called a "human interest" story.
08:22 September 3, 2011 by rude boy
@StockholmSam Nobody cares what you call it. It's not news, it's entertainment. And it's pathetic to have this as the top story. Feels like a joke.
10:21 September 3, 2011 by spy
@Farugia

The English are the best people to comment on the English language - certainly they are more qualified than unworldly 'septics' who have bastardised our beautiful language for far too long.

Now why don't you toddle off and start a website covering Sweden's news in American.
10:53 September 3, 2011 by Miss Kitten
Really? Maybe I'm a bit biased (check my username) but isn't anyone here at all happy that the poor kitten is okay?

Do you honestly care more about the fact that someone used the word "gas" for petrol? Wow.

And don't we get enough "real" news as it is? You know, news reporting on the depths of human misery and depravity. The really uplifting and "important" stuff. There's nothing wrong with a little feel good human interest story once and a while. Nobody died. The kitten is okay. And I think that's just lovely. No apologies.

You may now begin heaping abuse on me.

Don't be such a moron, rude boy. The Local has NO TOP STORIES. It is not a real newspaper. It translates stories from other papers and puts them on the website in the order that they are completed. What happens to be at the top of the page is just the latest to be added. It is a FRIGGIN' BLOG you dipsh*t and there are tons of people interested in lame stories like this. The Local knows this and so do The Local's advertisers.
12:25 September 3, 2011 by Svensksmith
I'd rather read a hundred stories like this rather than one story about a mad man killing kids.
12:41 September 3, 2011 by anonymous4
rybo1, Cats climb under cars and up inside them because it is warm there! I really like this story instead of all the blood and guts.

I liked this story too.
13:28 September 3, 2011 by Monitor Lizard
The kitten in the picture they chose to use with this story looks real surprised. It made me laugh.

:)
16:20 September 3, 2011 by Visew
I think that is THE kitten in the story. "Photo: Marie Lundqvist" - the new owner of the kitten.

When people click on the headline to look at the story, they already show that they are interested in that topic, and I agree with StockholmSam that The Local and the advertizers who fund it know that too. If you do not like the topic, don't click, the paper is not written for only one or two people. It's for all kinds of readers. I like world news better but I don't complain.
19:16 September 3, 2011 by Nightlight
Kitten in the photo is like "Whut?! Whut is dis clicky fing u pointing at me? It bettur not be anodder car..."

People, come on. The kitten is cute and it survived. I'll take a story like this over the usual thefts, killings, and politicians calling each other idiots any day.

Front page news............

And as we are in Europe the word is petrol not 'gas'.

And as we are in a so-called English copycat "newspaper", we can call petrol, gas or whatever.

00:50 September 3, 2011 by hassaan

What kind of media is this?

Good question that has just one answer that we all are aware of… well, some are not.

02:50 September 3, 2011 by anonymous4

Finally an article published that is of interest. We are dealing with far too much bad news. What a heart touching story!

If any medium published this type of stories more often, they would not sell a copy.

07:22 September 3, 2011 by rybo1

How did the kitten get in that position?

Because the kitten was laid there by The Local. Just watch the photo. The cute cat is trying to relax in a nice soft cushion or whatever.

10:21 September 3, 2011 by spy

And in Spanish it is called "gasolina" and so what. Are we discussing the fate of the little cat, or how to sell petrol, gas or "gasolina" Just wondering! Oh, but in English the word gasoline can be used.

@Farugia

The English are the best people to comment on the English language -

And they are also the best to teach how to be a pirate of the Caribbean.

10:53 September 3, 2011 by Miss Kitten

Really? Maybe I'm a bit biased (check my username) but isn't anyone here at all happy that the poor kitten is okay

Of course, what worried me is that the poor kitten was a passenger of that woman.

12:09 September 3, 2011 by StockholmSam

Don't be such a moron, rude boy. The Local has NO TOP STORIES. It is not a real newspaper.

You just discovered the luke warm water and the hole for doughnuts.

Have a good trip to the country of Utopia.
04:15 September 5, 2011 by waffen
I am delighted that the kitten is safe and living with a caring person.

Whether the little animal was on the gas or the petrol tank is of little consequence.

The little bugger obviously crawled up threre to get out of sight, and the person who heard the mewing did everything that she could to find the kitten. Both she and the mechanics are to be commended for their humanity towards this tiny creature.
16:36 September 5, 2011 by soultraveler3
I'm so glad the little kitty was alright!

It's always nice to read stories like this and it gives us a break from the usually depressing news. There should be more reporting of nice things in the news.
19:58 September 7, 2011 by circle8
The kitten should be named "Tank". I don't know what the Swedish word for tank therefore not sure what it would sound like when used. If not there is "Rider" or "Hitch Hiker.

Something similar happened to a friends cat who was in the engine compartment for 50Km in -10C weather. He got out of the house and apparently tried to get warm but when she left for work the cat was in for a ride. The cat survived but doesn't sneak out of the house anymore.

To the person complaining about the word "gas"..: Instead of saying "petrol", we here in Sacramento say "You Suck".... I mean, really??? Kitties are awesome, English snobbery is boring.... Your post gave me petrol..... nooooo it gave me GAS, you ninny!

And of course, the brave little kitten MUST be named "Mad Max", for the kitty is a true road warrior...

Hello from California and Thank you "The Local" for making me smile today with the kitty and the drunk moose.....
