New millions for Swedish synagogue security

The Swedish government has promised new funds to help boost security around the country's synagogues following accusations that Sweden hasn't done enough to protect it's Jewish population.

The government's autumn budget, set to be released on September 20th, includes 4 million kronor ($622,000) in new spending to “increase security and reduce vulnerability for the Jewish minority”, according to a statement from integration minister Erik Ullenhag.

“Anti-semitic remarks and other negative treatment based on racist assumptions is never acceptable in a democratic society,” Ullenhag said in a statement.

The money, which is a one-time expenditure for 2012, is meant to send an important signal that Sweden takes anti-Semitism seriously following accusations that the country wasn't doing enough to protect its Jewish population.

In December 2010, the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Centre issued a warning to Jews advising them to avoid traveling to southern Sweden.

“We reluctantly are issuing this advisory because religious Jews and other members of the Jewish community there have been subject to anti-Semitic taunts and harassment,” said Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director of International Relations Centre, said in a statement.

In addition, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has urged Sweden to do more to fight anti-Semitism.

Speaking with the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper, Ullenhag said he was “disappointed” that Sweden has been viewed as not doing enough for its Jewish minority.

He explained that Jewish groups in Sweden have repeatedly expressed their security concerns, which sometimes result in people deciding not to attend religious services out of fear for their safety.

“Clearly, that is totally unacceptable,” said Ullenhag.

“Jews are one of our national minorities and the state has a responsibility to ensure that people can go to synagogue are arrange in Jewish activities and feel they have the security they believe they need. That's a fundamental human right.”

Ullenhag explained that the funding is primarily meant to pay for an increased police presence, but that security cameras could also be paid for by the Swedish state if Jewish groups express the need for such equipment.

Recent statistics from Sweden's National Council on Crime Prevention (Brottsförebyggande rådet – Brå) revealed that there were 161 reported hate crimeswith anti-Semitic motives in 2010.

Overall, Sweden's Jewish community is estimated to include about 20,000 people.

Is it a racist hatecrime to point at the people those Jews have to be protected from?
12:37 September 5, 2011 by RobinHood
Southern Sweden, particularly Malmö, seem to be the seat of the problem when it comes to persecuting Jews, and Malmö's threatened synagogues will presumably receive the bulk of the tax payers' millions.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre lays the blame firmly on the famously "uninformed" Social Democrat mayor Ilmar Reepalu. "Uninformed" because months after the persecution of Malmö Jews was reported in the Swedish and international press, Mayor Reepalu said he didn't know anything about it, and that if the Jews in his city were being persecuted, it was their own fault anyway for supporting Israel. What a decent man he must be!

The mayor's ignorance of what goes on in his city, and his innate anti-semitism, is now costing the Swedish taxpayer millions to put right. No doubt the mayor will offer to pay for this from his own, the Social Democratic Party, or the city of Malmö's funds. The problem is very much of his own making. Why should everyone else have to pay to protect citizens of his city? Citizens that he declared to be "fair game in the first place.

The "Unalienable Rights" of Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Assembly, and Freedom of Religion are the cornerstone of modern constitutional democracies. Shame on Sweden for not protecting the rights of all of its citizens. As for Reepalu, he may call himself a Social Democrat, but his actions speak louder than his words, and his actions scream FASCIST.

What are the documented incidents of these hate crimes?

I heard that before Germans invaded Poland, Poles were castering those men with German blood and were killing pregnant nice German ladies in Poland.

Right on Sweden! I'm a Christian from Canada and nobody has given me a knonor yet for my protection. Didn't know it was an option. Can someone in the government please give me a call and I'll give you my bank info where you can deposit my cut of the millions?

Thanks guys! You know, we all should have some bodyguards equally, us Canadian Christians in Sweden need it too! Just read some replies to a few of my posts on the "L" and you will see the lynch mob is after me. hahaha Send the cheque out soon. Thanks a lot Carl Gus, really appreciate the support.

@Just draw a funny picture of Allah or his prophet. Then you can have bodyguards for all the rest of your life.

Who do we have to complain to to get protection in the Swedish medical system?
15:03 September 5, 2011 by J. L. Belmar
If they had all the millions to build the synagogues, why don't they have money to have their own security people protecting the synagogues? Must we pay their protection too, in spite of the fact that they would like to get rid of all of us and have an Islamic state nailed in the Nordic countries?
15:22 September 5, 2011 by Lightbulb
Maybe they should just build moats around the synagoges and fill them with crocodiles and piranhas... And a little bridge flanked with guards. Oh, my, that would be soooo chic!
15:26 September 5, 2011 by millionmileman
@Belmar

As much as I want governments out of peoples' lives, the main function of Government is to provide security for its own citizens. This is in fact how all foreign embassies are supposed to be protected. First by the host country, then as a last resort by the embassy's own security.

In light of the crazy Anti-Israel/Semitic threats would Swedish Law even permit Jews the right to bare arms for defense? Even in the USA very few states would even consider arms in any houses of worship.

I know you would not want the IDF landing in Skåne, in C-130s ala Entebbe, Uganda, 1976!
15:46 September 5, 2011 by J. L. Belmar
15:26 September 5, 2011 by millionmileman

Thank you for your comment, but the synagogues are not foreign embassies at all. So, next step will be that the Swedish government will protect whoever wants to be protected just because they are afraid of being attacked? Like restaurants, nightclubs, whatever?

Furthermore, what are the synagogues afraid of? If they are in Sweden in the name of peace and to promote peace, who would like to attack them? The SDs? The Israeli secret service disguised as Missionary priests?

Or, perhaps the security services paid by Sweden will protect the people inside who are conspiring how to commit a terrorist act? And where? And how? And when?

The more and more I read news like this, the more and more I am convinced that if Kafka had been a Swedish writer, he would be one of the millions.

And millionmileman. Once upon a time, I had a very good friend who participated in the Israeli mission in Entebbe. A very intelligent man and a very tough one too.Like the Shiva woman from NCIS Miami.

@ J L Belmar;

Hey genius..... Synagogues are a place of worship for the Jewish faith.

Mosques are a place of worship for the Muslim faith.

I think even you are capable of remembering that to aid in your further comments.

You are completely right. I apologyse to everybody. I just simply goofed. For one reason or another my mind went upside down and I goofed.

Than you cowboykodp for telling me "genius", but this time I was a complete idiot.
16:58 September 5, 2011 by Grokh
if the police were doing their jobs to protect people in the first place then there wouldnt be need for the government to go out of their way to protect a specific group.

maybe hold the stupid mayor accountable for whats been going on in malmö , specially when all the weird stuff that happens in sweden happens in malmö.
17:10 September 5, 2011 by J. L. Belmar
I apologize to everybody in this thread.

For one very stupid reason that I still have not figured out, I mixed up synagogues with mosques.

Being this the case, I fully agree that synagogues need full protection, but I do say that it the Jewish community had all those millions to build its synagogues in Sweden, why should we, the taxpayers contribute to help boost security around the country's synagogues?

I have been and I am pro-Israel, but here I must say that they have the money to buy their own security without the help of anybody, and specially not from the government who has proven to be always a pro-Palestinian one.

More CCTV, more police....1984 anyone? Ah well, all religion is bull...I never had a problem with people believing in whatever faeries or goblins they want to put making some of my taxes go into funding their protection....erm.....nej! Maybe if they stopped taking land from the Arabs there wouldn't be an issue.....food for thought.
18:33 September 5, 2011 by krrodman
While the headline here is that the Swedish Gov't is going to provide protection for Synagogues, that is not really the point.

The core principle here is that in a free democratic society every individual has the right to assemble and practice their religion free of fear and intimidation. Jew, Muslim, Christian.....It doesn't matter. Everyone has the same right, and the government has the responsibility to ensure those freedoms.

The bad guy here is Reepalu. His failure to defend Freedom of Religion is an international embarrassment for Sweden.

@Lilsocks

It doesn't matter if Israel takes Arab lands. It doesn't matter if Assad slaughters his own citizens. It doesn't matter if Priests molest little boys. Every individual - Jew, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, whatever.... - has the right to practice religion free from intimidation and fear. This core principle of an enlightened society is not negotiable. It's what separates us from the fascists.
19:02 September 5, 2011 by guliver
J.L. BELMAR

The point is not if the Jews have money to build a synagogue....

The point is that the Jews are affraid to meet together in one place and to pray,

The Jewish religion does not say you have to have an huge and wounderfull Synagogue you can pray also in a simple building with the presence of ten persons, you can pray even in nature or in your home, the problem is that these Jews are probably attacked and if it is so the duty of the government is to protect them,

I persoly think if you are living in a land and your life become hell ,leave that land as my parents did when they leaved Germany on 1933,do not wait it to become worse.
19:49 September 5, 2011 by Uncle
@ lilsocks

"Maybe if they stopped taking land from the Arabs there wouldn't be an issue.....food for thought."

Oh, yeah. Swedish Jews are famous for taking lands from them arabs. According to the islamic statistics, swedish Jews tool seventy trillion square miles of land rich with oil, gold, slaves, white tigers, fairies, Gennies in a bottle, magic carpets, diamonds and overall happiness sources....

Oh, no it was other Jews who robbed 70 million arabs of all the above described riches. Then of COURSE it is understandable to threat and beat swedish jews... Same people eh? Lets make them also pay for the damages to synagogues, like the smart nazis did at Kristalnacht.

I heard that there were not so nice Malaysians in Asia. Lets beat up some Algerians in order to take a rightful revenge? Sounds right, eh, lilsocks?

UNCLE Buddy,

Try practicing what you preach. Then your words would have much deeper meaning.

Needless to say.... Agreed.
20:28 September 5, 2011 by guliver

And before 1948 the reason for attacking Jews in Europe was because : they were rich? they were inferior race?they did not believe in Christ and are responsabile for all bad things happen in the world,so what have the Jews in Malmo to do with the decisions of the Israeli government? they are Swedish citizens, living in Sweden,or it is another opportunity to attack Jews, maybee the Nazi propaganda is not so attractive today ,and when you hit the Jews in the name of the Palestinians it sounds better.
21:32 September 5, 2011 by godnatt
Who's harassing and threatening the Jews?

The article doesn't specify for some reason. I'm wondering why.

Who could it be? Hmmm.

"Try practicing what you preach"

I would like to, but the arguments of the opposition, being trying to breach your house with an axe or burning it with all inside are, khmm.. quite convincing....
07:37 September 6, 2011 by karex
Hmmm, once more the reigning assumption that money is the solution to all the world's problems: if people are beigh naughty, increase their taxes; if they're being victimized: give them money. How about doing something that actually would have some effect? Impeach the mayor and overhaul the police force. What's the use of spending more money increasing the number of incompetent police who only react to a crime if it's high-profile (and more likely to either get their names in the papers or trigger a promotion), or if the perpetrator is already dead. Live perpetrators do have a tendency of reacting after all...
07:53 September 6, 2011 by sjuttiosjusköterskorpåsjukhuset
I think the government of Sweden wants to be fair. It has recently supported the Palestinian Authority with millions of kronors. It blames itself for allowing so many Muslim immigrants into Sweden. This in turn has caused widespread anti-Jewish actions in a region of Sweden that has historically been entrenched with anti-semitism and supporters of Nazi Germany. The mayor that Malmö has is an embarrassment for Sweden and he should be impeached. Sweden always chooses the "middle way," despite the perceived contradictions of this course, it's still the fairest.
08:06 September 6, 2011 by RobinHood
@Lilsocks

"Maybe if they stopped taking land from the Arabs there wouldn't be an issue.....food for thought."

What an incredibly ignorant person you are. You should stand for election as the mayor of Malmö. He also believes the Jewish citizens of Malmö should be persecuted for the perceived wrong doings of others who happen to share their religion. This medieval philosophy is of course dangerous nonsense, and has led to the horrible deaths of tens of millions of Jews, at the hands of pitchfork wielding morons going back centuries before the Holocaust.

Please keep your ridiculous and primitive thoughts to yourself in future.
14:52 September 6, 2011 by Andrea77
For J. L. Belmar I don't understand what exactly you want to say. It sounds very interesting, Please explain in more detail.

Thank you.
16:26 September 6, 2011 by Migga
All of you who want the mayor of Malmö to be kicked out of office doesn`t have a good insight regarding the demographic in the city. The mayor has a great support by the muslim inhabitants. They are the ones who are attacking the Jews, but aslong as they vote for the mayor they will come out clean. He won`t do anything and they keep putting him in office for it.

It is a well known fact that all native swedes are complete and utter anti semites.

There is absolutely no problem with Muslims attacking Jews or or Swedes.

The government has declared it so.

So it must be true.

You voted for this pile of excrement.

So don't blame me for the consequences of your stupidity.

Bye Bye Sweden !
18:57 September 10, 2011 by suckfist
Wait a minute---but isn't increased diversity a strength? Why would Jews in Sweden come under threat from the Muslim newcomers if heterogeneity is our strength?

lol at the Swedes all sucking up to a foreign, non native religion - as long as it's not Islam though, eh?

I like the double standards. That you would put millions into a foreign religion and its followers because of attacks from white supremacists and Muslims. But you would not put millions into protecting another foreign religion and its followers because of attacks from white supremacists and Jews (through more insidious, indirect means).

Hypocrites to the end, love you Swedes

The Jews in Malmo lived total peacefully untill the muslems came to that city.

The Jewsih community in Malmo are mainly old people who are affraid to go th their Synagogues because the muslems in the city bother them

"The money, which is a one-time expenditure for 2012, is meant to send an important signal that Sweden takes anti-Semitism seriously following accusations that the country wasn't doing enough to protect its Jewish population."

Why should ONLY Jews be protected, and treated as a "precious people". Why only them?!

Sweden, why are you making some people more valuable than others?! Are not we living in world were EVERYONE has a SAME RIGHTS. EVERYONE . . .

or

Equality just works in some cases. This is how Sweden works

- Oh poor Jews, lets protect them.

- Oh, poor africans lets protect them

- Oh, poor arab lets protect them.

- Heh, do you come from some "developed, civilized, NORMAL" country?! Go, I am not interested in you. . .

Tyskland, officielt Forbundsrepublikken Tyskland

"Tyskland" is in itself already definite, and does not need to be additionally defined by the determinative suffix 'en', which would result in the ungrammatical "The Germany". erlaubt der Duden in diesen Fällen beide Genera für die folgenden Zweifelsfälle:

Ilmar Reepalu is the man responsible for this Islamic attack on the law-abiding Jewish citizens of Malmo. Reepalu should be stripped of his office, furthermore for his inappropriate use of insulting vocabulary blaming the Jews for being attacked because they support Israel is no excuse for them to be insulted, threatened, in many instances forcefully attacked, having their Synagogue(s) and community center firebombed by these illiterate Jew-hating infidels who have been brainwashed from the cradle to the grave by their Judeo-Christian-hating clerics,

Reepalu should be tried in a court of law, because this left-wing so called liberal in effect is supportive of those brain-dead Islamic-hooligans. Sweden is not the Middle-East (maybe I am wrong & Sweden is in the Middle-East) therefore these immigrants should be made to realize that if they want to live as civililized human-beings they should knuckle-down to the western way of life, if they can't they should then be thrown out to whence they originated from, it should be made plainly to them once and for all.
