Sweden Democrat MP in bouncer 'beating' uproar

Published: 5 Sep 11 16:35 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/35966/20110905/

Sweden Democrat member of parliament Erik Almqvist was reported to police and arrested at the weekend following a confrontation with bouncers at an exclusive Stockholm nightclub.

The incident took place late Friday evening when Almqvist, 29, and his girlfriend decided to visit a nightclub in the Stureplan district of Stockholm following a crayfish party, the Aftonbladet newspaper reported.

But when Almqvist attempted to gain entry to the club's VIP-room, bouncers blocked his way, resulting in a confrontation which the bouncers claim turned violent.

According to a report filed with police, Almqvist pushed one of the guards and then punched the guard in the face.

The sitting member of Sweden's parliament, the Riksdag, then allegedly dealt out several blows to the bouncer before being taken away by agents from Swedish security service Säpo.

In an interview with the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper, head of marketing for Stureplansgruppen, the company that operates the nightclub, said that Almqvist behaved “extremely aggressively”.

“We think its extremely unsettling that he became so violent that the Swedish Security Service was forced to remove him from the area,” Johan Rydervärn told the newspaper.

Police who were called to the scene placed Almqvist under arrest and took him in for questioning.

He was also ordered to leave a urine sample before being released later on Saturday morning.

In a statement on the Sweden Democrats' website, Almqvist disputes the bouncers' version of events, claiming that he was the one who was attacked.

According to Almqvist, two bouncers “jumped” him when he asked why it was taking so long to gain entry into the club's VIP-area.

“There was no verbal altercation and not the least big of violence from our side,” he wrote.

Speaking with Aftonbladet, Almqvist said he plans on reporting the bouncers to police for attacking him and for giving false statements.

“They accused me of doing something I didn't do. That's a serious crime,” he told the newspaper.

In addition, Almqvist has filed a libel complaint against Stureplangruppen's Rydervärn, according to the Dagens Media newspaper.

“Firstly, he caused me great harm when he went out an lied to the media. Secondly, this is a way to make sure he doesn't dare to continue lying,” Almqvist told Dagens Media.

Speaking with SvD on Monday, Sweden Democrat spokesperson Martin Kinnunen emphasised that Almqvist still had the support of the party.

"We have total confidence in him. We know him well and think that his account is credible," he told the newspaper.

Almqvist, who was born in Stockholm but was elected to the Riksdag as a representative of Västra Götaland County in western Sweden, served as the head of the Sweden Democrats' youth wing until shortly after gaining a seat in parliament following the 2010 elections.

In parliament he sits on the Social Insurance Committee and is also a member of the Nordic Council's Swedish delegation.

Although I dont have anything positive for SDs but I am sure the bouncer is lying, being an ex bouncer i know a bouncer's mind set, if he pushed a bouncer, in the next 30 seconds 4 bouncer would be bringing him down and smashing his head on the floor, and after resolving it then they would have asked who he is and not waiting for him to push him again on the face? Abouncer will wait for that after the first push :-)))) crap
17:13 September 5, 2011 by jacquelinee
If he did nothing, why did the government police arrest him? Since they were there, it must have been obvious where the problem was. It is quite possible too. that it was a fabrication. After all, I read "The Girl With The Dagon Tattoo"

:-) But I also was not born yesterday, and in many cases and in most countries, the political anthem when in an unfortunate position is..."Deny, Deny, Deny."

The SD and their supporters have the lowest Swedish behaviour amongst themselves! They brag about their typical Swedish behaviour which is common among most Swedes except SD and their supporters!
17:46 September 5, 2011 by Migga
He was taken to the police station to do a drug test because the bouncers said he had taken drugs. He wasn`t arrested. And of course the accusations about him taking drugs wasn`t true. But the police rather takes the word from a bouncer then a SD politican.

This is perfect drama: you take two sides, both with poor credibility, and you present them as opposites. You have to decide now who to believe: politicians or bouncers? If only I'd care enough...

BREAKING NEWS: BREAKING NEWS: BREAKING NEWS

An SD politician was not arrested this weekend. Heinric Goebelsson said yesteday "I'm ashamed. I had a quiet Saturday night at home with the wife, and walked the dog on Sunday morning. I was neither drunk nor involved in a fight with anybody. SD spokesman said "Heinric has been suspended, his behavior does not reflect the SD party or its values".

Theres no use in explaining or argueing with brainwashed illiterates, because they will never understand that these racist are idiots who hate everybody plus their own supporters if they dont follow their propaganda of spreading hate and lies , why would anyone want to smear thier name ,if they are already smeared, the media is writing news even if was from an another party they would write that too, SD Violence is increasing before few days a SD MP beats a bussdriver ,now a security guard . All Sd supporters on thelocal are Asskissers and are not even swedish,
18:09 September 5, 2011 by jostein
Well, since 2 SÄPO bodyguards were there to protect Almqvist and have given testimony these bouncers are toast. I think SD will push the "false accusation" charges and the libel charges hard. They have lots of practice from several lawsuits (both ways) the last couple of years.

Normally a bouncer can do more or less what he wants since whoever they beat up tend to be drunk and no neutral or sober witnesses are around. So, the sober bouncers always have their way in court.

Obviously the local will be mum when the ruling comes that exonerates Almqvist in 6 months to a year or however slow the courtsystem operates.
18:33 September 5, 2011 by skumdum
The bouncer, Armen Ararat Mnaskanian is an outspoken SD hater. He saw an oppertunity to beat up an SD politician. What he didn't know was that the guys standing behind him was Almqvist's personal SÄPO bodyguards.

All this does become ridiculous. This is mobbing. I do not believe in all those accusations, anymore.
20:29 September 5, 2011 by jamesblish
Nothing to do with smear tactics, bouncers are just bad people that love to harrass and physically abuse others.
21:23 September 5, 2011 by godnatt
Anyone who's ever been to a Stureplan nightclub knows that Stockholm bouncers are the scum of the earth.

No doubt these thugs attacked him. Happens every night. He just happens to be famous and gets a shot to fight back.
21:33 September 5, 2011 by Svensksmith
Must have been sissy bouncers.
23:33 September 5, 2011 by stenhuggaren
The one glaring factor that just doesn't add up in Almqvist's defence is that if the Säpo officers "rescued" him and were thus "witnesses for the defence" so to speak, why did they then hand him over to the Stockholm police for arrest?

Everything else is word against word, but if he had been innocent and received a beating then his security staff would have taken him to the hospital if necessary and home if not.
01:00 September 6, 2011 by jostein
@stenhuggaren

It is explained in Almqvists statement by the bouncers being "tjänstemän". Bouncers have policemans authority (if they have a black badge which says "ordningsvakt") within a restricted area.

My guess is that if a person with such authority makes a report then a police followup is inevitable. Since almqvist is a politician, he can hardly ignore rules and regulations and due proceduure? If you aim to make law, a first step is to follow it?
02:57 September 6, 2011 by Raggare
There was no arrest, Eric Almqvist was accused by the bouncers to have taken drugs, and consequently had to leave a urine sample at the police station.

"Almqvist pushed one of the guards and then punched the guard in the face."

"...then allegedly dealt out several blows to the bouncer".

Really?! So does anybody think the Säpo agents just stood back and let this happen? Not likely.

I really don't believe for a second that a Sweden Demokrat member of parliament would be stupid enough to start a fight.

Knowing full well the media is on a Sweden Demokrat witch hunt, he is aware it would be all over the media.

Well, I guess the incident s all over the media anyway. But when the truth comes out and he is aquitted (found innocent) I doubt it will be in the media at all.

I just wish who ever wrote this gave it to someone else to proof read, so many missin letters! Dreadful English and editorial work as usual.
07:52 September 6, 2011 by stenhuggaren
stupid definitely, but unprecedented? It seems not. Search for: Träffade SDs Pressekreterare Erik Almqvist på stan.. on YouTube. The street brawl scenes are from 50 secs onwards.

While I'm sure that there are two stories to this one as well, there is no doubt that EA is an MP that has been in a scuffle or two and that he is engaged in assaulting someone who is clearly in retreat.

The video is from last year. While EA was not an MP at the time, he was a senior member of SD in an election year.

Geeeez! are there no cameras in nite clubs here!? in my line of work i compare security guards to dogs... sit, attack etc...! they do as the establishment wishes and no more... no less! this Almqvist prob did push buttons dropping names to get into the VIP room. what sort of guy is he??? would he abuse authority and act like a tool out in public on his own time...?

and the security here Stockholm... the "bouncer" ( a term that shouldn't be used any more unless u run a slaughter house rather than a respectible venue) I personaly haven't had any issues with guards... but then i haven't been a tool!
15:20 September 6, 2011 by eppie
So why does the swedish state pay Säpo to be bodyguards so that some parlementarian (and there are many for such a small country) can go on a night out at Stureplan? Or does he pay for them himself?
18:41 September 6, 2011 by jostein
@eppie

Because the violent left attack SD systematically. Just last week stones were thrown through a window on one parliamentarian and arson was comitted against another (with her four year kid in the house).

This has the support of the primeminister. I think the idea is to keep the violence and harassement at such a level as to discourage people to represent SD but avoid actually killing anyone. Even if it was touch and go for the SD representative that was stabbed during the election-week.

"Anyone who's ever been to a Stureplan nightclub knows that Stockholm bouncers are the scum of the earth.

Second this sentiment! Worst bouncers in the world.

@ stenhuggaren:

The youtube video clip you are refering to is taken totally out of context.

If you watch Eric Almqvist's response to this very selective video clip you will find out the background.

It shows how Eric Almqvist tries to kick the beer/pop can away from his antagonist, as well as the antagonist being held (arrested?) by the police afterwards.

So let's stick to the truth, please.
10:40 September 7, 2011 by stenhuggaren
@raggare

I think anyone who watches the clip can decide what they are watching for themselves. They don't need you or Erik Almqvist to explain it to them.

Referring to your previous post - Almqvist was in fact arrested (gripen in Swedish). He was released several hours later.

Let's stick to the truth (where the truth is verifiable) please.
12:07 September 7, 2011 by Streja
The reason why SD have SÄPO protection is because we have had two political murders in Sweden and SD politicians have been threatened, like many politicians have.
19:02 September 7, 2011 by jostein
@streja

"Threatened", that is the understatement of the year. "Regularly attacked" is the truth. With the approval of the PM and the Church and the media and, well, most functions of state and society really. During last election campaign there were regular hate-rallies against SD. And for what? Having the audacity to have a program of normalizing swedish immigrationpolicy with the rest of europe? For having the audacity of having a program that people that move to sweden should try to make as little a fuzz as possible and normalize into swedish society and culture? This is a crazy country.

I personally left SD since i simply cant share their enthusiasm for an "open swedishness" and "culturally swedish", id feel like a hypocrite if i was speaking for that idea, however noble and constructive it is. And i believe we are passed the point of no return and i think us swedes should prepare for the clansociety of old. But i wish them the best of luck, they are better people than me. Or more hopefull and constructive at least.
01:58 September 8, 2011 by Raggare
@stenhuggaren

I stand corrected: I interpreted arrested as "anhållen" rather than "gripen". I have checked, and arrested can be translated both ways. Please excuse my poor Swenglish.

Still, the fact remains that he was "gripen" only because he was accused of being on drugs, and had to submit to a drug test (urine sample). Nothing to do with beating up the bouncer.

And I do think people should not watch only the short video clip, but rather watch the long one -which shows what happened before the kick. Otherwise it's kind of like just watching a cop shoot and kill a man, without knowing that the man first opened fire on the police and killed one police officer.

I think it's time to end this, since we will obviously not get any further because of our differing opinions. Thanks.
