Wrong to sack cop for lewd blog posts: court

A Swedish police officer who blogged about how he and a colleague secretly dabbed the tips of their sex organs against parts of a car driven by female cops should not have been fired, a Swedish court ruled on Wednesday.

The case involves a police officer from Skåne in southern Sweden who used a blog written under the pseudonym Farbror Blå (Uncle Blue) to describe an occasion when he and a fellow officer "bell-ended* the door handles, window buttons, gear stick, steering wheel, stereo buttons and the police radio buttons, as well as the receiver used to talk to the operations room.

The practice of bell-ending, or ollning in Swedish, involves a man touching an object with his glans and has established itself as a recurring form of practical joke in Sweden.

The term comes from ollon, the Swedish word for glans.

"When the girls had driven around for an hour or so in the bell-ended police car we had a chat with them and revealed our bell-ending exploits.

"Now we know what a facial expression of bleak anxiety looks like," he wrote, ending his post with a smiley face.

The posts first gained attention in March 2010, and after the identity of the blogger was confirmed, the officer was fired from his position on the police force in June of that year after following a ruling by the National Police Agency's (Rikspolisstyrelsen, RPS) staff disciplinary board.

But police unions, objecting to the officer's termination, argued that it constituted a case of unfair dismissal and filed an appeal with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers (Arbetsgivarverket) to have the decision overturned.

"We demand that the decision is overturned. The Police Union does not consider there to be factual grounds for dismissal. We demand general and economic compensation," the union wrote in its application on behalf of the officer.

In addition to blogging about touching different parts of a female officer's car with his penis, 'Uncle Blue' also wrote in lurid detail about a call-out to a student residence where a mentally unstable young woman allegedly made sexual advances towards both him and his partner.

"We decided we couldn't force her into institutional care. Being horny isn't dangerous, after all," he wrote.

Further blog posts included details of how he shook hands with a man who had just hanged himself, provoking guffaws from his colleagues. He also claimed it felt "damn good" to punch somebody in the mouth.

The case was eventually taken up by the Swedish Labour Court (Arbetsdomstolen) which ruled on Wednesday that the Skåne County police department didn't have the right to fire the man because of his blog posts.

The court ordered the police department to reinstate the officer and that he be receive 125,000 kronor ($19,500) in compensation.

However, the court rejected the officer's request for reimbursement for lost wages.

*Translation note: Bell-ending, a neologism derived from a slang term for the glans, is not a word in common English-language usage.

I agree, don't fire the guys, just let the female police officers smear menstral blood all over there patrol car's door handles and steering wheel and call it even. What's fair for the bull is fair for the cow.

Polisen is a clown. I am sure he learnt a lesson after being mischievous.

what are they teenagers doing pranks? maybe firing them will set an example for any other person who does that kind of stupid thing.

What? How is it wrong to fire these guys?

The Police have a role model obligation. Given that I'm pretty sure I'd get arrested if I'd flip out the one-eyed wonder muscle and slap it on their cars, they should not be encouraging this and job termination is more then justified.

So this is how adults are allowed to behave without consequences? Hmmm...let's see here...teenagers want to be adults...how are adults expected to behave...hmmm...no wonder teenagers and young adults in Sweden are so messed up.

WOW,,, What is now bad behavior, sorry this is wrong. They should be working in a Whore House.......

The headline is correct. It is wrong to sack them for blog posts. The right thing to do is to sack them for misconduct. The blog post is just their way of revealing that they are not worthy of the public trust.

That's ALL I had to read: "a police officer from Skåne," and I KNEW it would be about another pervert cop there. What do they put in the drinking water of that county? Then the police union wants a mentally disturbed SOB like him re-instated, AND he demands Kr125,000 for lost wages? He's a juvenile delinquent, not a police officer, and certainly not a man. He is also a sex pervert who will only continue to sexually explot others, knowing that all he will ever get is a little spanking on his arse, which he probably gets even more sexual "kicks" from.

I thought it was funny. And a lot of things that are funny are usually not appropriate or politically correct. If I have to loose a large part of my sense of humor to always be appropriate or always be politically correct then just shoot me now. What is life without humor. And since when is a cop not human and allowed to have fun. Ya to some I could see it not being funny. But these people got to understand that not everything is funny to all people. So to those who are not laughing I suggest taking the stick out of your rears and smile.
