Bildt makes shock Palestinian envoy move

Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt has angered his coalition partners by unilaterally recognising the Palestinian representative in Stockholm as ambassador.

Bildt received the new ambassador on Thursday, making her the first Palestinian representative to be formally welcomed at a ceremony at the foreign ministry.
Fariz, born in 1955, is the highest ranking Palestinian representative in Sweden since the delegation arrived earlier this year.
According to Fariz, the Swedish government has been an important aid giver in the development of the Palestinian state and institutions as well as having made a clear stand on wanting a peaceful and fair two-state solution in the region.
”This is the climax of a long relationship with the Swedish government and we appreciate the support and help that we have received,” she said to TT.
According to a statement from the foreign ministry the upgrade of the Palestinian representation follows ”great advances made in the development of the Palestinian state”.
”It is now important that the parties resume negotiations leading to a two-state solution and the creation of a democratic and sustainable Palestinian state, side by side in peace and security with Israel,” said Bildt after the meeting with the new ambassador.
In two weeks the UN general assembly will gather in New York and the Palestinians are anticipated to demand independence through the representation of president Mahmoud Abbas.
If the question is raised on the security council, the US is expected to veto the demand.
Fariz did not want to comment on what the new status of the Palestinian representation in Sweden will mean to the UN process.
”It is, of course, up to Sweden to make their own decision,” she said to TT.
Spokesperson on foreign policy for the Liberal party, Fredrik Malm, said on Thursday that he regrets Bildt's decision to upgrade the Palestinian representation in Sweden.
”It is regrettable that Carl Bildt has made this decision and it is unfortunate that it happens just at the time when the UN is set to discuss the recognition of the Palestinian state,” he said to TT on Thursday.
According to Malm, Sweden should take a more balanced stance in the Middle Eastern conflict and work for a two-state solution and a peaceful settlement of affairs.
Malm also says that the decision has been taken by Bildt without consulting the other government parties.
”Not that I am aware of anyway. I just found out,” he told TT.
The spokesperson for foreign policy for the Christian Democrats, Désirée Pethrus, is also surprised.
“I am surprised that the decision for the change comes now when the issue is such a hot potato in the UN,” she told TT.
According to Fariz, however, the timing for the upgrade has nothing to do with the closeness to the UN talks.
“We were informed of this step a few months ago,” she said to TT.

Alternately, to downgrade the Israeli Ambassador would be less welcome.
Israel in it's turn should treat the new neighbour as an enemy foreign country, meaning disconnect electricity and water supply, as well as canalization. Close the borders to workers.

For an israeli, you are awfully naive. Not so long a go I have read an interview with a romanian ex-securitate Ion Mihai Pacepa. He claimed to be involved in ideological preparation of Arafat and palestinian government.
According to him, USSR felt that it needs to create a fierce natural enemy to the US, since it did not actually believe to win in a conventional war. It wanted to use the easily inflamed muslim world to create a good anti-US force and the first target was Israel (as a front base of USA).
USSR paid for translating and distributing "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in the entire arab world. After that, a work was done to present US as ruled solely by Jews.
As for Arafat, his extreme ideas were rejected as an acceptable way to undermine Israel. It was forbidden to Arafat to mention the size of Israel (in fact statistically, most arab children draw a map, where Israel is the size of Saudi Arabia) and that it surrounded by enemies.
To suppress Israel he was allowed to talk ONLY about palestinians as a suppressed minority, where in fact in all the documentation of Israel's enemies, a "successful" outcome of war with Israel would mean a territorial division of it between mostly Jordan and Syria. Only a little cute lamb form could actually make the west support them and accept terror as a form of freedom fighting.
It is impossible to reasonably talk with them about rejecting the idea of returning refugees. They will continue attacking you with the reasoning of the refugee issue, as well as water issue, as well as Jerusalem issue etc.

It is ridicolous to to ask for direct talk as a prerequisite for statehood! I don't think you understand. The main theme of muslims is to take the knife out of muslim body (Israel). All of this is a clear view of what is planned for Israel. Of course there should be 2 countries, since Israel is not just to their own people, by feeding palestinians. However, it should accept that no peace is possible, as long Jews are not muslims. By definition. And act accordingly. I would hang it on the UN to keep peace there and if does not, burn it to the ground every time there is an attack on Jewish state.

Your analogy is irralavant. Basque and other sepratist groups are as the yare called sepratists. They belong to a country but now they want to be seperated. Palestine has never belonged to Israel. Even if they want to it is impossbile as long as Isreal defined itself as a Jewish state. The borders beween Israel and Palestine is already defined. This is an issue of occupation not seperation. The arab world started to understand just now after 63 years what does it mean democracy and good social life ,the young generations travelled to America and Europe and came with other views, but still in the arab countries there are the extremists the muslem brotherhood, the Hamas who want to have a country like Iran.

Yes ,that is what I said before the arab countries are developed countries, in Eygpt
there are young people who want to live in peace and want a prosperity, specialy those who studied and live abroad,in the western countries, but the other part still believe in the muslem brotherhood and want a country after the model of Iran,those were the people who attacked our Embassy, but also when Mubark was President there was much anti semitism in Eygpt in all the media.
Besides now the Egyptians close eyes on smugling weapons from Sinai to Gaza,therefore I passed many days in the shelter with my family last month.
The question is what will decide the Eygptian people ,if we will go back to Nasser days,it will bring certainly to a new war and we will have to occupy Sinai and Gaza strip for the 4th time...if they choose the good guys who want a western democracy the peace will be kept,

On camp david Barak and Arafat have allready reached an agreement,the practical disscussions went on in Eilat with Yossi Sarid who was a Minister in the Labour party,the plane was withdrown of Israel from territories occupied in 1967, other territories exchange, and withdrown from the Muslem parts of Jerusalem keeping the Jewish sites like the Jewish Quartier and the walling wall.
Barak offered a withdrown program after the Israeli -Eygptians peace treay,in gradual steps,Arafat rejected it and wantedit to be immediatly ,besides he addressed the right of return of all Palestinians to Israel, Barak offered return just to the Palestinian state, then Arafat broke the talks,and opened the first Intifada,Clinton said afterwards:"the Palestinian did 2 big mistakes on 29.11.47 by rejecting the UN decision number 181 on the division of Palestine, the second made by Arafat by rejecting the camp david offer.

You can deny the existence of state of Palestine on papers but you can't deny the existence of Palestinians unless you have massacred all of them as Nazis did to Jews in WW2. In fact there are millions of people who have no attribution than being Palestinian and many of them were living in an area where you call it now Israel but they cannot go there anymore!
