Okay for carers to deny patients sex purchase aid

Personal care assistants cannot be forced to help their patients to buy sex while on vacation, concluded the National Board for Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).

"The personal care assistant has every right to say no to such a cooperation," wrote the board.

The board's Council for Ethical Issues investigated a case in which a disabled man planning a vacation to Denmark announced his intentions to buy sex whilst in the country. Buying sexual services is legal in Denmark, as opposed to Sweden, and the patient asked for his assistant's help to dial the phone number to the service.

"In general, if the patient asks for help to dial a number, it can't be considered reasonable to check where the phone number goes, or find out what purpose the patient has with the call," wrote the board.

However, as the patient had already informed caregivers of the purpose of the phone call, the National Board of Health and Welfare suggested following one's own moral compass.

"Regulations for employees in the public sector are clear, when representing their organisation they aren't allowed to aid actions that are forbidden in Sweden," they added.

"But it's important to not simply act as a robot, without reflecting on the issue yourself. The personal care assistant must make their own judgments in every situation," concluded the board, noting that in tricky situations, the assistant must follow his or her own moral conviction.

looks like typical hand washing from Swedish Administration. Regulations are clear but the personal care assistant must make their own judgements...then depending on the result the board can always claim a clear conscience, whatever happens...and the employee will be to blame.

the employee should have waited to get into Denmark then called. he/ she would not be breaking Danish law..If the situation was reversed, would a Danish care worker be prosecuted for calling a sex worker in Sweden for a danish invalid? ...sorry i forgot there are no sex workers in Sweden since Swedens illuminated sex trade laws...

Ya Think???? If they are healthy enough to be looking to buy a bit of the nasty, I¨m thinking they are probably healthy enough that they don't need a personal care giver assistant and are healthy enough to hunt down and purchase their own "jollies".

what if he is a quadruple amputee with a fifth member intact?

@old git, so true.

I can agree with the fact that a personal care assistant is not allowed to assist someone in breaking the law. I do not understand why such an assistant would travel with someone across the border, unless she was privately employed and not payed for or subsidized by the Swedish government.

However, if there is a sensible reason for him/her to travel to another country with their patient then they obviously have to respect local law. Which in return might allow things that are illegal at home or disallow things that are legal at home.

I fail to understand why this has to be such a big deal.

As the entitlements grow, so do the demands. If Swedes only knew how shockingly ridiculous this looks like to others.
01:05 September 11, 2011 by Indignerad
johnoleson, your comment makes no sense. What in this article has anything to do with entitlement?
04:41 September 11, 2011 by johnoleson
Indignerad, this may offend you but a personal care assistant is definitely an entitlement. The man is disabled so he is entitled by the system to a personal care assistant. Had this assistant been privately employed by the recipient this would not be a public issue.

Jeez, the Swedes are such a narrow-minded prudish illiberal lot.

The Dutch have long since understood that even the severly disabled may have sexual needs and desires, and provide special prostitution services for them.

Personal carers in Sweden are employed directly by the person they care for. If the employer discovers that the carer want to impose her moral standards on him, he should simply fire her.

Someone else said it better than me. Puritanism, the fear that, somewhere, someone might be enjoying themselves.

Are you kidding!!!! Is this for real........The Mommy State a its best.....

I suppose women who have no legs are of no interest to you as there aren't any men for sale for them to buy in Denmark.

Sex is not a right that should be fulfilled by others. Disabled people are just people and they are perfectly able to make people tick so they can go to bed with someone. Don't patronise them.
02:21 September 12, 2011 by old git
well i don't know about Denmark, but i wouldn 't be surprised if there are men for sale there as you say. there are male prostitutes for other males and for female clients in plenty of places, maybe even in sweden , though of course for who i cannot imagine as all swedish citizens should have no problem in getting free consensuel sex with the partner of their choice, should they Streja?...and for your info if it had been woman invalid in the article I would have had exactly the same opinion...but i think you probably cannot accept that with your naive idealogical mindset , on this topic at least...
