Man charged for playing Dylan song for his ex

A 50-year-old Swedish man has been charged with harassment after he played a Bob Dylan song for his ex-girlfriend hoping to reignite an abandoned love.

It was around 11pm one evening in June 2011 when the 50-year-old would be troubadour stood outside his ex-girlfriend's balcony, guitar in hand, the Metro newspaper reported.

The love-sick man had also cobbled together a group of five other men to serve as vocal accompaniment for the late-night live performance, each of whom donned hoodies with their hoods up.

But soon after the man began to serenade his ex, who had previously taken out a restraining order against him, she called the police, leaving 50-year-old guitarist blowin in the wind.

According to the woman, she perceived the sidewalk concert as threatening, even if, at the time, the man was only standing near the doorway.

“I had the idea that I'd play a Bob Dylan song for her. I thought I was doing something nice,” the man reportedly told police during a subsequent interrogation, although it remains unclear which song he had in mind.

According to the ex-girlfriend, she and Dylan-wannabe had a court date scheduled for the day after the mid-evening musical interlude.

She also claimed the man had threatened her new boyfriend in connection with the incident.

When police arrived on the scene, the 50-year-old had no time to think and quickly ran and hid in the bushes, an escape attempt he later described to police as “tedious”.

On Monday, the man was indicted in the Gothenburg District Court on suspicions of harassment and making illegal threats.

While the 50-year-old man denies having committed any crime, it remains unclear if he wishes he'd thought twice before thinking it was alright to try to win back his ex.

An ex-boyfriend, against whom a restraining order was taken out - clearly there was some past history of harassment and/or violence, they don't get granted just because you'd like to have one - turns up at 11 pm, accompanied by five men who don't show their faces.

The woman did the only sensible thing, calling the police. The situation implied that he might not accept rejection, and had brought backup.

the woman has a new boyfriend and a restraining order against him and he thinks its reasonable to turn up at night with a bunch of shady figures....

they actually should send him for psychiatric evaluation. clearly he is unable to process and accept what has happened and needs some medical help.

This man wasn't "charged for playing a Dylan song for [sic] his ex" as suggested by a profoundly, and likely deliberately, miss-leading heading of The Local's article. The man in question was charged firstly, for violating a restraining order placed against himself by his ex-girlfriend. A very important measure -not lightly granted by the courts-to prevent, at the very least, unwanted harassment, and more seriously (though unfortunately not uncommonly) to provide aid, relief and security from threatening and possibly violent individuals. The man's intent and the material form of his actions are immaterial. Period. His companions, I would suggest, could also be charged with aiding and abetting his unwarranted violation of the court order. At the very least they are grossly negligent and willfully stupid in assisting in his supposedly 'romantic folly'. Clearly the opportunity for romantic gestures in this relationship ended long ago.

What if he would be singing Rolling Stones - I cant get no satisfaction? Would it be marked as aggraviated harassment ?

DPM: you're long winded & correct pointing out the obvious. We all know it was simply poor song choice. he got the wrong 'BOB' .. 'No Woman, No Cry'.

Her obvious comment was of course: "You got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend".

...why show a photo of the great man himself at the head of the article?

It makes it appear that Bob Dylan is, in some way complicit, in this heinous crime!

Not every Dylan song topped the charts. Some of them were criminally bad.

This whole article is dumb. The man wasn't charged for singing a Dylan song but for violating a court order to leave this woman alone.

"According to the ex-girlfriend, she and Dylan-wannabe had a court date..."

The guy sings one song from Dylan and all of a sudden he is a Dylan-wannabe.
