Palestinians hopeful of Swedish UN vote

Published: 15 Sep 11 13:07 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/36160/20110915/

The new Palestinian ambassador to Sweden, Hala Husni Fariz, is hoping that Sweden will vote in favour of the Palestinian territories at least getting non-member permanent observer status in the General Assembly, the same as Vatican City, if the matter is brought up before the UN' next week.

”I would be surprised if Sweden doesn't vote yes,” she said in an interview with news agency TT, adding that she thinks the majority of EU countries will do the same.

Things are hectic for Hala Husni Fariz at the moment. It wasn't until last week that her status as general delegate was upgraded to the role of ambassador to Sweden by the Swedish government.

”It was proof that the Swedish support for our efforts in building up our own state and civil service,” said the ambassador.

The government, as well as foreign minister Carl Bildt, were slammed over the decision by the Liberals' and the Christian Democrats' spokespeople on foreign policy.

”It is regrettable that Carl Bildt has made this decision and it is unfortunate that it happens just at the time when the UN is set to discuss the recognition of the Palestinian state,” the Liberal's Fredrik Malm said to TT at the time.

It was feared among government parties that this upgrade precluded Sweden’s vote in the General Assembly discussion on the Palestinian territories.

“I am surprised that the decision for the change comes now when the issue is such a hot potato in the UN,” Desirée Pethrus of the Christian Democrats told TT lafter the news broke.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has time and again explained that he will demand a full membership for the territories in the UN next week. But the United States has made it clear that such a demand will disrupt peace talks with Israel and that the US would veto it in the security council.

”I am only partly informed as to what he is going to do, and not at all in what order. But yesterday he said when meeting with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton that we are going to the UN to get our member status and that there is no return,” Hala Husni Fariz told TT.

If the road to full member status turns out to be closed off due to a US veto, the Palestinians could demand the same status as the Vatican city in the UN.

The Vatican City is recognised as a sovereign state, but not a s a UN member. Currently, the Palestinian territories are viewed as a non-member entity.

Carl Bildt is just a hot shot.

It is well known that Bildt have personal hatred for Israel. He must remember he is representin Sweden. If he is not happy with EU n swede's stand, je should resign.

Don't care, don't care, don't care......let them all sort the Palestine issue out amongst themselves. Sweden has plenty of problems to deal with closer to home. Why bother nosing into the unsolvable quagmire of the Middle East?
19:05 September 15, 2011 by Iraniboy
Recognition of a country that was suppposed to be a UN member 50 years ago is a humanitarian move and lingering any furthur is merely immoral. I wonder how this so-called liberal party can justify their position!
20:17 September 15, 2011 by motti
Iraniboy, that the Arabs rejected everything continually is a problem of their own making.

Nearly one million penniless Jewish refugees from Moslem lands, where Jews had lived for thousands of years - including modern day Iran, formerly Persia.

Prior to 1948, the Palestinians were the Jews, not the Arabs.

Jordan is Palestine, it includes 78% of the British Mandate of Palestine that was to be a homeland for the Jews. This after the Arabs had various new countries, including Lebanon, Syria, Trans/Jordan etc.

By the way Iraniboy, when are you going to come clean and own up to your green Islamic map of ther world. please tell the liberal innocent Swedes exactly how the m,ap has changed in thed last 40 years. now there's a good lad.
21:08 September 15, 2011 by Iraniboy
@motti

I'm neither suggesting anything to Swedes nor advocate anything in Iran. According to wikileaks Palestinians Authorities wanted to give up nearly all their rights for current occupied territories and right of return for Palestinians but Israel rejected the deal. Neither of them have commented on this claim since it is equally disgraceful for both sides. It clearly shows that Israel looks for nothing short of totall annihilation of Palestinians. As a result it is a moral objective to recognise and support Palestinians and future of Jews since this path of Isreali government is unsustainable for the future of the Isreal.

Iraniboy

you repeat over and over the same fantasy which has nothing to do with the reality

The Palestinians reject by now any recognition of Israel, the different between Hamas and Fatah that Hamas calls for immediate destruction of the state of Israel trough Jihad and Fatah says: first step is 2 states solution, second step is the right of return and a demographic elimination of the Jewish state
22:06 September 15, 2011 by Iraniboy
@guilver

My FANTASY is based on what is revealed on many news and medias including Isrealis news agenices but your FACTS is based on your gut feelings and it can vary to make your point!

You are in state of denial. You don't want to accept the fact that Isreali government rejected the peace deal with Palestinians despite Palestinians gave up eveything! Because you know that it will make Isreal nothing short of an apartheid state as South Africa and it doesn't suit your agenda!

I hope someone in Palestine has read international law and realises that with statehood comes international obligations.

Once Palestine is recognised as a soverign state, another state can legally declare war on them if they commit an act of agression. Firing thousands of rockets counts as an act of agression, which Israel could legally allow Israel to declare war. The Palestinian authotiry could also be brought to the International Criminal Court for for agression after 2017 when the rules of the ICC change.

The sooner there are two states the better. The problem is, there are so many lunatics on all sides trying to turn the place into a permanent war zone. Palestinians need to have a think about this and deal with the rocket firers, in case they backfires on palestine by there actions.

The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) ambassador to the US, Maen Areikat, told reporters in Washington on Tuesday that the Palestinian state his regime is trying to gain recognition for at the UN next week should be free of Jews.

"I think it would be in the best interest of the two people to be separated," said Areikat. Of course, any talk by Israeli politicians of removing Arabs from the Jewish state is immediately branded as racism and aggressively dismissed by the international community.

Israeli and Jewish leaders were incensed by the Palestinian official's remarks.

Turning the tables on those who want to make Israel synonymous with history's most racist regimes, Minister of Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs if Israel Yuli Edelstein noted:

"After an unending de-legitimization campaign and attempts to brand Israel an apartheid state, it appears it is the Palestinians who seek apartheid. [Areikat's] comments conjure up Judenrein motifs."

Judenrein was the term used by the Nazis to describe the goal of their campaign to cleanse Germany and Europe of Jews.

Speaking of the Nazis, former US National Security Council official said that it appears the planned Palestinian state will be the first nation since World War II-era Germany where Jews are forbidden to live by law.

Poor Israel.

They just lost their only two "friends" in the region; Turkey and Egypt, and are about to face up to Palestinian nationhood as a consequence.

Note to Israel. Murdering the citizens of Turkey and Egypt is not the best way to make friends and influence people. A world without friends is a lonely place indeed.
14:51 September 16, 2011 by prince T
Israel is loosing nothing from these developments. On the contrary Palestines will loose more. I suspect is holding Israel from reacting to Turkey. Escalation of crisis will favour Israel. It will also encourage building more settlements and right to deal blow to some percieved enemies. Kevin Harris, i hope u see my point.

@Iraniboy. Under Arafat Israel was willing to give up 75% of Jerusalem against the wish of the Jews under Barak. Arafat rejected it and helped to vote in Sharon. We dont need wikileaks to know this. That was the closest to success peace deal initated by Clinton. Who iis to blame.

1.You know exactlly that if the Marmara would have obayed to the Israeli navy, the vessel would have been stoped, the passengers would have been sitting with their hands on their heads, nothing would have been happened to the passengers, but they decided to go on versus Gaza and to attack the soldiers with cold and hot weapons.Arduan minance with all media that he is looking for occasion to attack Israel, ignoring that the violent people on the Marmara came from IHH group which is a Turkish radical Islamic terrorist group supported by his party.

2.Eygpt signed a peace agreement with Israel ,the condition was that Israel will give all Sinai till the last cm and withdrown all its settlements and army-it was done, but Eygpt after Mubark broke her side in that bilateral agreement: Let terrorists from its land attack Israeli citizens travelling in tourist bus in Israel,

Let its citizens attack the Israeli Embassy in Cairo.

With such friends who needs enemies?

HAMAS has been firing rockets against Israeli citizens.

IRAN has been speaking against ISRAEL and against the JEWS.

And SWEDEN acts against ISRAEL as an ennemy, a very hypocrital ennemy: how is't possible for Carl BILDT to set up diplomatic ties with " ? of Palestine" without

the governement's agrement ?

A lot of people don't want no more to go and visit SWEDEN!

Or to go and to work in SWEDEN !

I just say you "SHAME ON SWEDEN !"

Remember that LUTHER wrote terrific words against the JEWS: This explains that the Church of SWEDEN has been condemning ISRAEL a lot of times.

Have you ever been under the firing of rockets ?

You must try it.

@Gulliver and Prince T

Yes you are right. Everything is going swimmingly for Israel. I expect they will hold some celebrations after the UN vote.
18:37 September 16, 2011 by guliver
Iraniboy

The truth is one,,your newspaper are no serious evidence but the evidence are known in all over the world,

Israel offered the Palestinians a very good offer in Camp David in 2000 with the mediatore Pres. Bill Clinton, it included withdrown from most part of west Jordanland ,Gazza, and the muslem parts of est Jerusalem,

Arafat rejected it and opened the first Intifada against us,Clinton was angry with Arafat and told him that the Palestinians did twice mistakes in 1947 by rejecting the decision 181 on the division of Palestine in 2 states an Arab one and Jewish one, the second in 2000 rejecting Barack 's offer.
20:18 September 16, 2011 by prince T
I wish ii will be there to celebrate with them. Voting will most likely go against Israel. Jokes apart i am on the side of common sense. The middle east will become unmanageable soon if they dont stop this madness. Hate israel madness no matter what .
22:08 September 16, 2011 by guliver
Kevin Harris

They got that decision from the UN allready on 29.11.47 with resolution 181 which decided the divion of Palestine in a Jewish and a Palestinian state-they rejected it.

Between 1948 and 1967 Gazza and West Jordan land were in arabs hand-why did not they build a Palestinian state then? [PLO came to world in 1956]

The answer is because the issue was not Palestinian state but eliminate Israel, then they attack us again in 1967 and lost these territories in war,and then came the demand for Palestinian state, how come it did not bother them between 1948 and 1967,there was enough time for them to build a Palestinian state inside 1967 borders.

Israel agreed to Palestinian state again in Oslo agreement and Barack offered Arafat withdrown from most parts of weast Jordanland and Gazza in 2000 in Camp David ,Arafat rejected it and left Camp David ,Clinton was angry with Arafat and said:''the Palestinian made twice the same mistake-1.on 29.11.47 by rejecting resolution 181 and in 2000 by rejected Ehud Barack offer
05:22 September 17, 2011 by motorsports
the only comment i can offer is would the swedish seek blessings or curses?

the answer to that is how your country votes for or refrains to acknowledge the Palestinian statehood issue at the N..the choice is yours.

There is only one truth and that is Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life.

His truth said this land is Israels forever.
05:35 September 17, 2011 by johnoleson
News flash: Sweden will vote for the Palestine territories against the well being of Israel. The UN vote will cause the Palestinians to riot and take some cheap shots at Israeli citizens and many Palestinians will die as Israel defends her people. Thank you Sweden for your part of this. Doing are part to make the world a better place?
19:02 September 17, 2011 by motti
Iraniboyboy, you really do not understand the meaning of truthful, accurate and factual information. You have been well answerde by others. I note that you again have ignored the facts that I posted here inaddition to one simple question. what is wrong with you? Read the above again and please comment on what has been written.

Kevin, First of all Egypt was not a friend. since Israel gave up all of the Sinai, for a scrap of paper, there has been a cold peace only, manipulated by the Egyptians. Mubarrak made sure of that. Turkiye is now ruled by an Islamist that has caused the relations to sour between israel and Turkiye (correct spelling). The present turkish leader has imprisoned the remainder of the Armed Forces High Command that did not resign. The turkish military has really ruled the country since Ataturk, to try and keep the country fairly secular. Sadly, Turiye has now become Islamist and what you have today is the result of that. Nothing more and nothing less.

Israel has very good relations with many countries including Greece, Cyprus in the neighbourhood, Canada, Australia, many other countries in the expanding industrialised countries further east. and most important. The USA. Russia is still Jew hating and anti Israel, China is playing both cards at the same time.

I suggest that you ignore your mass media for "news" and check out debka.com for realtime hard facts. MEMRI to understand what the moslems say to their own, rather than to the western media. Try the JerusalemPost. You might learn something, before you exercise your own biased opinions.
