Navy deployed to probe suspected sub sighting

Several Swedish naval ships were deployed in Gothenburg harbour on Thursday in a hunt for a suspected submarine thought to be spying on Sweden.

Suspected “foreign intelligence activities” are being investigated in the waters west of Gothenburg harbour, the Swedish Armed Forces said in a statement.

A number of ships have been sent to the area to investigate a reported sighting that came from a “credible source”, according to the military.

“We're now analysing the report. Among other things, we have a number of ships in the area which are involved in the analysis work. The area is also heavily trafficked and therefore it's important that we also go out with information about what we are doing,” naval inspector Jan Thörnqvist said in a statement.

Ships from Sweden's 3rd Naval Warfare Flotilla, based in Karlskrona, as well as the 4th Naval Warfare Flotilla, and the Amphibious Regiment from Berga outside of Stockholm are currently patrolling the area in an attempt to verify the report.

“At this stage, we don't want to make any comment whatsoever about what was observed,” Törnqvist told the TT news agency.

“We're using all the resources we feel are appropriate and which are available.”

He added that he sees no reason to speculate about the basis of the observation but rather to wait until the Navy has completed its analysis.

A sub, spying on Sweden, varför?
14:30 September 15, 2011 by isenhand
@sarcastrix

Varför? Good question, given the Russian military build up in the Arctic and their recent acquisition of an amphibious assault ship (I wonder what they need that for?).

don't panic it's probably just the british navy, lost about to run abround again.

Or perhaps it is some other nation sneaking ashore then they'll travel over land and steal technical data from one of the world's premier car manufacturers Saab ! More probably a bit of drift wood and ex sea dog starting on the bottle too early.

How do you spy from a submarine? What are they going to do, send frogmen ashore to poke around Gothenburg? Would have been easier to get a fly&hotel package.

Wow! Really. News such as this is so unexpected. (Let's be clear that's sarcasm.) There was a time (maybe 20 years ago) when reports of Soviet subs in Swedish waters were common place on the news --- being regularly featured in the news in England. Of all those claims only one appeared to be substantiated when a Soviet sub became stuck on a sandbank. Something that the British Royal Navy has emulated with its latest subs getting beached while on proving trials. But seriously reports of Soviet subs in Swedish are no different to the folk-tale of the boy who cried wolf.

"Sub!"

"Sub!"

"Sub!"

that when there really is one (and it is actually a danger) the rest of us will have become so bored by it that we won't care.
21:16 September 15, 2011 by swedejane
They aren't spying on Sweden as much as they're merely testing the NATO perimeter....and yes, it's Russia. Subs don't spy. They lie in wait and launch missiles when given the orders.

What do we have to get (SPY) ? in a few years all the country will be Made in China !!
21:48 September 15, 2011 by summo
subs spy in the sense that they listen to all radio traffic etc., or drop people off in little boats (very rarely) , more likely just playing games, testing reactions, counting scale of response and how quick .

Why do i have have a bad feeling that the Swedish navy is going to depth charge a lost whale or lost basking shark?
15:56 September 17, 2011 by willowsdad
Don't forget the USA. Our Navy has subs cruising all of the world's waters just in case we have to intervene (for humanitarian reasons, of course).
02:34 September 23, 2011 by sunnchilde
Do they still make depth charges? hahaha What are you going to do if you find it? Are you going to fire on it? Are you sure? Because that might not be such a good idea, depending on who it is.
08:42 September 24, 2011 by rise
@ sunnchilde

Some 20 years ago the navy DID fire. For example dropping depth-charges from helicopters (it was all shown on the TV-news). Probably at some poor seals, but anyway, that I believe answers your question.
15:56 September 24, 2011 by sunnchilde
@rise I'm just saying, espionage is one thing, it's all nice in fun and games, but you destroy a multi-billion dollar asset and kill 50 odd sailors - now there is blood involved. What if it was a Russian sub? What if it was North Korea? What if it was a nuclear sub? What if it was a Russian nuclear sub? Sweden might now have a serious problem, regardless of who was right or wrong.
22:27 September 24, 2011 by rise
@ sunnchilde

Yes of course it would mean serious problems. Very serious indeed. But the one to blame is, in such a case, the nation that's arrogant enough to risk a whole sailor crew and an astronomically expensive sub by entering Swedish water.

One can laugh at the navy if it's dropping depth-charges at fishes. But I think it's better safe than sorry. No arrogant "super power" of a nation is going to come here with their games without suffering consequences. Sweden has to make that nation in question think och feel that it is way too expensive a game not to leave us alone.

And Sweden that isn't member of for example the powerful NATO has to be able to take care of itself. But of course Sweden wouldn't be able to stand for too long of a time against some super power, but again; the cost for an aggresive nation has to be so incredibly high that never should it be worth the attempt.

Anyway I'm very glad if our navy is only catching fish and nothing more serious than that. :P
