Dog owner sentenced after attack

A dog owner in western Sweden was sentenced and fined after her Rottweiler viciously attacked two joggers in a wooded area last summer.

Local courts found a Borås woman guilty of causing grievous bodily harm when her Rottweiler attacked and severely bit two joggers in a wooded area on separate occasions last summer.

The convicted dog-owner is on probation for 100 days and must pay 25,000 kronor (about $4,000) in damages, according to local media Borås Tidning.

The district court held that the dog-owner neither had supervision or control of her four-legged companion as required by law.

In one incident, the dog allegedly charged a female jogger, tore through her arm muscle and continued to attack her legs and face. The victim finally fended off the dog with a sharp stick.

As the investigation pursued, authorities discovered that the Rottweiler had previously attacked another jogger in the same area without the owner being able to stop the animal.

During the trial, the dog-owner denied accusations that she had been negligent, maintaining that the dog had managed to tear through and escape both a leash and muzzle.

The courts could not validate such claims, noting that she neither had supervision or control over the dog as required.

The dog has since been put to sleep, at the mandate of local police.

Am really shocked how people here have large dogs with no muzzles. There is no way they can control the dog should they turn nasty, get frightened by something and attack etc.More shoced though that there is not any rules to say they have to.

easy way to solve this...

if your dog bites someone you the owner are charged with assault.

If your dog kills someone you the owner are charged with murder.

If a person wants to have a dog they have to take on full responsibility and punishment for any of it actions as if they themselves had done it.

Maybe these irresponsible, mentally challenged people will be a bit more careful in future.

and for those who think "oh...not my dog, mine is gentle and not aggressive"...

That's what most dog owners whose dogs maimed and killed also thought..you can never know what a dog will do...even after years of showing no signs of aggression at all.

If you think you do know..you are one of the mentally challenged.

Vancer: So you hate dogs and those who own them...??

Animal lovers are often accused of loving animals and disregarding people, but perhaps it's easy to see why.

Rottweilers are very passive dogs, especially ones with a little mixed blood. People will always own dogs, cats, birds, fish , reptiles .. perhaps joggers should also beware of Boa Constrictors and Pythons that have been released into Swedish woodlands by reckless owners who don't want them when they get too big .. these snakes attack dogs .. while we're at it we should tag Moose & Elk with giant reflex red triangles and decree that they don't travel faster than 30 k's.

Rottweilers with a little mixed blood are no longer rottweilers.

Excellent to read that the Swedish Judicial system is following through with these types of irresponsible dog owners.

It's really not the dog that is the criminal, it comes down to the dog owner and how they handle their animals in public places, and are to be held accountable.

Most owners of Rottweilers, at least the one's I've seen, are not very responsible dog owners. These animals are a special breed and need more attention than other domestic pets.

If the dog bites someone the owner fined/sued for the first offense and for the second, a 6 month jail term.

If the dog kills someone, it should immediately be put down and the owner sued and sent to prison for involuntary manslaughter as Swedish law permits, which seems close to what has happened in the article.

Rottweilers account for about 30% of dog bites in the USA. Pittbulls account for another 30%. Both breeds have no place in a civil society. Increasing the liability for owners of animals breed for violence is a good first step.

I looked at the picture in Google. Now, I know. I see this kind of breed very foolish dog. It never obeys to the owner. If the owner says to sit. Then it will sit. But, in 1 second again it behaves to it's wolf nature. It gets up again and keeps barking. It behaves like as if it got infected with rabies. It is like taming an wolf. Can a person tame a wolf?

Nice analogy Boar, so the owner is the U.S. and the dog is Israel right? :P

I think two factors are at play here. First, the nature of dog is naturally aggressive but we tend to focus on rotts, pits, dobies, shephards and other large dogs simply because they are big and harder to control. Many very small breeds (and mutts) are equally aggressive but we tend to laugh them off because we could stomp them into a puddle of goo if we had to. We take the natural, instinctive aggression of big dogs more seriously because they have the real capacity to kill us or seriously injure us. Therefore, it is not the dog species but rather the dog's size and strength that intimidates us; if we encountered a Pomeranian that weighed 60 lbs I don't think too many of us would consider it cute. Our natural sense of fear would kick in and we would see it as a threat.

Second, and perhaps more importantly, the dogs that scare us the most tend to be sought out by people that wish to scare us. Rarely do I see a rott, dobie, pitt, presacanaria, dogo, etc in the company of a mature, well-educated, responsible adult. Most of the time, I get the sense that owners of these dogs are a bit off-kilter, somewhat aggressive or uncontrolled themselves. We have this innate ability to sense that about other people and I think people who own the kinds of dogs that scare us the most are the least willing to control the dog's aggressive nature. Instead, they want to cultivate it and use it as a tool to boost their own power in the human-to-human relationship.

They are sad, sad people who own these dogs. The law should stipulate that all dogs over a certain weight/size limit should be required to wear chest harnesses and muzzles. And the owners should have a special license that requires a training program for both dog and owner.

Dogs become vicious or uncontrollable because their owners choose to make them so. Penalizing the owners is the proper thing to do. It is not the breed or size of dog but the irresponsibility of the owner. Perhaps there should be a test and licensing requirement for owners. However, one should also take many of the above comnents with a grain of salt, since they appear to come from members of a sect that beats fear of dogs into their children from an earlt age.

A test and a license for being a dog owner? What's next, a test and a license for being allowed to enter Systembolaget?
21:58 September 18, 2011 by Corvinus
No, a test and a license for children would be nice though....

In answer to Boar, no a wolf cannot be domesticated even if raised from a small puppy, they tend to act as you say, they will not learn obedience at all. and yes it is the owners fault, most dog owners treat their dogs wrong and love them more than they discipline them causing the poor dog to think they are in charge and puts the responsibility and stress on the dog to defend the owner, a calm submissive dog does not worry about its owner and will not attack! Normally rotweillers are dopey stupid dogs i have found so yeah they may not be trainable/stable dogs suitable for any useful thing apart from frightening people!

B*tchslap might have a point too about the owners being the same!

Just put the owner to sleep!
