A 30-year-old Swedish man has been sentenced to death in Thailand for manufacturing methamphetamine, in what the man called a “political” ruling.

A Thai court sentenced Kim Eriksson Sirawan, 30, to death for possessing and manufacturing narcotics, the Aftonbladet newspaper reports.

But a judge immediately changed the sentence to life in prison, which is common for foreigners sentenced to death in Thailand, and corresponds to 45 years in prison, according to the Aftonbladet newpaper.

“This is a political ruling. They're out to get me,” Eriksson Sirawan told the newspaper.

The 30-year-old Swede was arrested in his home in Bangkok in July of last year. Police discovered Eriksson Sirawan had a drug lab in his home as well as 53 grammes of methamphetamine.

He is now set to be transferred to a special prison for inmates who have been convicted of drug offences.

According to Eriksson Sirawan, he plans to appeal the verdict.

“The Thai legal system is a joke. I'm disappointed that the court didn't consider the evidence I presented,” he said.

In court, Eriksson Sirawan claimed that he was set up and that a Swedish individual was used as an informant.

He said he simply wanted to learn how to make methamphetamine and shortly thereafter a Swede turned up to help teach him and – Eriksson Sirawan claimed – reported him to police.

According to Aftonbladet, it can take up to four years for Eriksson Sirawan's case to be heard on appeal.

"He said he simply wanted to learn how to make methamphetamine.." So he wanted to learn how to make a illegal drug. And there for he claims to be innocent when the court accuse him of making an illegal drug?

"I just wanted to learn how to shoot somebody, so I shot him. But I'm not guilty of murder" :)
09:31 September 22, 2011 by Abe L
If you want to learn how to make methamphetamine, you're best off going through the learning bits in a country that doesn't apply the death penalty to drug offenses.
09:38 September 22, 2011 by sjuttiosjusköterskorpåsjukhuset
I think this smart a$$ is a joke and really should have gotten the death penalty, no less.

"Swede sentenced to death in Thailand"

Kim Eriksson Sirawan, yes 100% native swede.

53 grams....wow what a criminal. But I agree with Abe L. Don't travel to a country that has these harsh penealties for drug offences. There are many cases known of people that got drugs put in their bags at the airport (without them knowing)and subsequently got harsh punishments.

If tourists stop going to Thailand just see how fast they start changing their ignorant laws.
10:09 September 22, 2011 by Nemesis
Maybe this incident might get into the heads of a few Swedes to stay within the law when not in Sweden.
10:53 September 22, 2011 by philster61
Somehow I have absolutely no desire to visit Thailand. Not before not now not ever.....
11:10 September 22, 2011 by crofab
Thailand is a wonderful country. The people are super friendly and helpful, the food is delicious and cheap, amazing wildlife everywhere, lively and fairly safe cities, and there's a very laid-back atmosphere everywhere you go. I am not just saying this as a tourist, but as someone who has lived there. Meth effs up people's lives, it is not a safe drug like weed or shrooms. This guy was adding to what is already a big problem in Thailand, and he should have known the penalty for this kind of thing is very high. For everyone else, if this kind of heavy-handed sentence makes you not want to visit Thailand, then by all means don't go. The last thing Thailand needs is more meth addicts and/or Swedish tourists.
11:29 September 22, 2011 by bolababu
hahaha, judging from the comments above, Swedes seem to be angry that Thai laws are too harsh so it is the Thailand government's fault that this guy got caught and sentenced. We Swedes are too big for your laws but you must obey ours when you visit our country ...hehehehe
11:39 September 22, 2011 by philster61
The last thing Thailand needs is more meth addicts and/or Swedish tourists.

AndnI for one will most certainly not be one of them..... I think there are better places and far more exotic places in Asia to travel to....
12:52 September 22, 2011 by Imperor
Thailand is a fascist country that really shouldn't be supported by our tourist-money until they start respecting human rights!

They're kind of like Iran or Israel, with no freedom of speech, sectarian violence and so on, but that's not exactly reported in the Swedish news now is it? Try Al-Jazeera and Asian/Australian news-networks...

Of course this guy is guilty and if he's that stupid as to get caught making meth in Thailand he deserves to die! Natural selection and all that...
13:12 September 22, 2011 by GLO
Good ruling.... Destroy others life, you should pay with the same.
14:27 September 22, 2011 by canuk
AWESOME ruling, too bad the swedes dont have more balls, kill someone here and you get community service.
15:01 September 22, 2011 by useronthenet
It amazes me why foreigners (farangs) come to Thailand thinking that their ways in Europe are as equally acceptable in Asia ... well they are NOT !

Doing drugs especially in Thailand is a no no.

If you disrespect the laws of any land then you can expect serious consequences.

In this case this particular individual can look forward to a miserable life of being in custody at the infamous Bangkwang (Bangkok Hilton). It's reputation is well-known throughout the world, and I can assure you it'll have a lasting effect for the rest of his life. If there is a hell ... it's Thai jails !

You have been warned !
16:00 September 22, 2011 by Svensksmith
If this type of penalty was adopted in more countries, that would put an end to the meth trade.
17:28 September 22, 2011 by SockRayBlue
I sure do wish the USA would do the same. We might as well clean our country up once and for all.

The only way to stop illegal drug use is to criminalize the user.

Drug users just don't like feeling normal, they are not sick and are not victims.

I hear it coming!!!......Alcohol is accepted and legal, at this point there really isn't a need to discuss it.

It is not without fault...but legal just the same.
19:09 September 22, 2011 by rybo1
This guy is stupid and a complete dork. He wanted to learn? Well now he´ll learn a lot more.

All but one, committing of capitally punishable crimes are deserved to face suspended death penalty with one option only of serving in the possible New UN military power.

Whether it is Saddam or Bush or Davis or any human on earth found somehow guilty of killing another human(s) with evidences beyond doubts, then there is nothing helpful to stop the balancing actions by the Creations of the religion-less Cosmic Creator.

A first time killer for the sake of honoring public opinion should receive clemency with a suspended death sentence only to serve in the front line UN military force but never a second time commissioner committing repeated crimes.

@Crofab & Useronthenet & others: Thanks for telling it like it is. This a$$hole knew what he was getting into. Meth has screwed up the lives of enough Thais who are a beautiful, warm, caring, and expressive people. The last thing they need is yet another "unhappy-with-the-world" Swede to enter their country and their lives. Just like little children, most Swedes never like to take responsibility for their OWN actions, as well as one of their own. Blaming Thailand, their government, and their people is an easy and convenient cop-out.

@Useronthenet: The last time I was in Thailand was back in the mid-1980s. I do hope that the Thai government has put an end to child prostitution. Can you PLEASE give me an update on this matter? It was very disturbing to see white men (pedophiles) from western countries, including Sweden, seeking to have sex with very young girls and boys (I'm talking pre-pubescent at that!) and not even being ashamed of it, sharing the same cocky attitude like the a$$hole Swede in this headline. The death penalty should also be applied to these pedophiles.
11:50 September 23, 2011 by cogito
Thailand is a wonderful land with a rich culture, lovely people and the world's best cuisine.

The tourists (Swedish and other men, mostly from the northeast quadrant of Europe) who buy cheap sex from little girls and boys are disgusting.

If the drug tourists are too dumb to know about the draconian drug laws before they go, they deserve to do time in the Bangkok Hilton.
15:05 September 23, 2011 by jacquelinee
@ cogito

I'm with you totally on this one.
15:22 September 23, 2011 by Chris Persson
Evrin, to be fair, Imperor is mostly correct and Thailand sure has some issues. His views on "natural selection" are a bit odd however, so we'll disregard that.

However, Thailand is still an amazing country. But I still can't find one country on this planet without it's own issues.
17:28 September 23, 2011 by graceolsson
Is it joke, Eriksson . If you wanted to learn about it why did not create a laboratory in Sweden?

Bad arguments.

He´s an irrational animal. An intelligent person not to travel to Thailand to make experiment with illicit drugs, knowing the Laws of Thailand...Rules are rules.

Now, he´s in the helll because the prisons in Thailand aren´t like the prison in Sweden, where you have gym, restaurant, library, etc...

I don´t know what happen to human being...they live in a good country, with freedom, etc...but, not..they want adrenalin and so..they take the bad decision to break RULES..in a foreign country like Thailand...

God´s sake! If he wanted to do it, why did not do it in Sweden? After all, here, has no death penalty.
15:48 September 24, 2011 by jamesblish
If he's a Swede, why was he living in Thailand? Must be a thai guy who got swedish citizenship and then moved back. Surname suggests it. Oh well, it's his own fault..
