Maud Olofsson bids tearful farewell

Maud Olofsson today held an emotional speech to the Centre Party congress in Åre in northern Sweden on Thursday, as she stepped down as leader.

In her speech Olofsson challenged her successor Annie Lööf to stand up for the party's values, the importance of an open society, of more entrepreneurs and that the individual must take centre stage.

At the same time Olofsson suggested that Lööf must show a willingness to compromise. Olofsson was unable to hold back the tears as she took to the podium and proceeded to dedicat a large part of her speech to her proudest achievements.

"There are those who like to call me Mother Alliance and I say, that I am," Olofsson said, in reference to the government coalition that she did much to form.

The party will now undergo a period of renewal with a new leader and some changes in other key positions. Olofsson underlined that she has nothing against continuing in her role as enterprise minister.

"It is fun to be enterprise minister, but I can also live without it," she said and pointed out that new party leader Annie Lööf is the one to decide.

Lööf has said that she has not yet started to consider ministerial posts.

"Firstly I should be elected, it is then the new party chairperson's role to put together her new team in the government. I am going to begin my deliberations during next week, but during the autumn I will present a new team," Lööf said.

Among the names under consideration for ministerial posts are Annie Lööf herself, who is expected to replace Andreas Carlgren as environment minister, and MEP Lena Ek who has been named as a possible new enterprise minister.

Annie Lööf will be elected as new party leader on Friday and will on Saturday hold her inaugural speech.

We will miss her - all I can say is never before in the field of Swedish politics has so much insignifcance been concentrated in one political profile as has been the case in Mauds tepid contribution to Swedish society. She leaves us as she arrived ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!
19:43 September 22, 2011 by millionmileman
Interesting that she leaves the day after SAAB was granted extra time to reorganize.This also happened to another officer with the EIB the day after their loan was approved. She could have done a lot more sooner to relieve us of so much angst of late.

Hmm! Smells like Surströmming to me (Swedish Herring).

Good riddance. Pity her replacement is even more of a crazy right-wing neoliberal than she is. The one good thing about Lööf is that she'll kill the party off once and for all at the next election. I mean who in their right mind would vote for someone who admires Maragaret Thatcher and Ayn Rand and who doesn't give a damn about her party's own base who come largely from rural Sweden and have been hit harder than most by the neoliberal orthodoxy which declares that all you have to do is slash taxes and regulations and the economy will prosper. It didn't work in Argentina and it certainly won't in Sweden either.

Hm, well, seems Maud was cloned?
22:20 September 22, 2011 by AnnicaE
@millionmileman

Surströmming is fermented herring (Swedish herring is more pickled herring) and something they like up north, like in Maud-land...

Anyway, she'll not be missed or just as missed as most people miss surströmming...

@AnnicaE

I love herrings .I was referring to the retirement the day after Saab got a reprieve in court. It's the stench (like Surströmming) of the whole affair!

I am originally from England and English, English is a lot more sarcastic than the American version. Remember Shakespeare was from Stratford-on Avon. If Maud was from Copenhagen then Hamlet would say "There's something rotten in Denmark!"

@millionmileman: I do agree with you and your keen observation that Maud's stepping down takes place the day after more time is given to Saab for reorganization: obviously, there is a connection. Something DOES smell rotten here. If you hadn't have kindly explained to those unfamiliar with what Surströmming is by your parenthetical definition, I don't think Annica would have corrected you. She is correct, there is a difference, but to most of us in the English-speaking world, Swedish herring of ALL sorts seems so alien. But anyway, thanks for explaining the difference, Annica. Hey/Hej, I just noticed something so funny: With a very strange surname like Lööf, didn't it dawn on her parents that giving her a first name that starts with an 'A' was the wrong thing to do? Instead of calling her Annie Lööf, we may just simply refer to her as "Alööf," which would be more suitable.

SAABs threehunderedfiftyeleventh reprieve? Yes, what a coincidence.

There really ar some dumb people about.

Maud announced her retirement weeks ago.The Saab appeal was filed days ago.
