Swedish family reports agent after 'dream' Egypt holiday turns sour

Dead rats in the restaurant, frogs in the pool, cockroaches in the buffet – a Swedish family has reported their travel agent for false marketing after a dream holiday to post-revolution Egypt turned into a nightmare.

Despite costing the family over 30,000 kronor ($4,380) the holiday with they had booked to Egypt was nothing like the glossy brochure from holiday firm Ving had described.

According to daily Hallandsposten (HP), the family from Halmstad, in the south of Sweden, decided to report Ving after having a nightmare experience when they expected their dream holiday.

The family had booked a room at a newly built hotel with pool and all-inclusive meals.

A few days before they were to travel, the travel company got in touch with the family and said they wouldn't be able to stay at the hotel, since it hadn't been finished.

However, the family were promised accommodation at a hotel of the same standard.

When departure was imminent, the company got in touch again and said that the pools at the hotel would not be usable due to a faulty pump but that transport would be provided to a nearby facility.

By then it was also too late to cancel the trip with a refund, which had been an option before.

When the family arrived at the new hotel they were presented with a room that smelled of mould and had a view facing a brick wall. According to HP, they also found vermin in various places in the facilities.

The travel company has expressed regret at what has happened saying that the reason for the family's nightmare experience was the revolution in the country.

The family has since been compensated with 30 percent of what they paid for the trip, but the company is unwilling to pay out more.

The family has reported the matter to the The National Board for Consumer Disputes (Allmänna reklamationsnämnden - ARN).

Well, the family should have seen the writing on the wall after the first phone call and changed the venue of their vacation. They chose to go ahead w/ their plans full knowing of the political situation and hope for the best. They are lucky they got reimbursed 30%.

johnny, that's EXACTLY what I was going to write. Thanks for doing it one step before me. Political turmoil in Egypt was reported in the news often and regularly well before they even made their reservations. How stupid. Plenty other places to have chosen to vacation at. They'd be the type to not turn down a "good deal" to Libya now, then come back and cry and expect sympathy from us.

Idiots, they should have gone to Israel, as I did and even bathed in the Dead Sea. The Israeli breakfast must be the finest in the world. I stayed in Tel Aviv, went to Afula, in the Jezreel Valley and Jerusalem. This year over 4 million tourists visited Israel.

@motti

of ALL touristic destinations that could be safer than Egypt you propose Israel?

haha, I just found it funny! No offence! :)

Have to agree with others commenters here.

With all the political turmoil and unrest going on, who in their right mind would travel to Egypt now? The worst of it may be over, but it will take some time for everything to stabilize and become safe again.

It's always been a dream of mine to see Egypt, but I'm going to give it a few years.

@?????,,Actually Israel is as safe as Paris, Rome on London. You should go and check it out for yourself and don't rely much on the popular media ;-)

It's kind of ironic to read about that. I am basically from Egypt and I know that this is not the 1st time tourists get such terrible treatment there (not saying that this is a rule) but all I'm just saying is that it's hard to put all the blame on the travel agency while even in normal times in Egypt these things actually happen to some tourists!

Oh....I´ve been two times in Egypt and my experiences there weren´t so good..At the moment, I avoid Egypt...The second and last time it was something like what the Swedish family describes now...TERRIBLE....But they should have gone to Zanzibar, Tanzania. There is simply the paradise...

I´ve been in Israel during the Intinfada and I REALLY FELT ME SAFE...I waked in Tel Aviv in the midle of the night and I didn´t see any problem. There, I avoid ONLY full restaurant and bus.

A perfect vacation! Now they will appreciate home more.

Common sense has not prevailed.

Egypt is generally unclean and unsafe although its people are often nice enough.

To this family I also suggest the following amazing tourist sites:

Libya Eco Desert Vacation (sleep under flares canopy)

Yemen Cultural Immersion Vacation - for women only (you too can be the fourth wife of an understanding Sheik)

*First aid not included.

Afghanistan Hands-on* Electrical Engineering Vacation. Road side bombs will be supplied on location.

* You may be required to leave your hands behind.

In all fairness, this article does not address the fact that not one but eight families were affected. They were all misled by Ving and told they would be getting something that they were not, something they paid a lot of money for. Ving showed a glossy brochure and promised facilities that were not available. In fact, the hotel and the facilities were not even half-finished. How were the families supposed to know this in advance? If the hotel and the facilities were not up to the standard as promised, Ving should not have been selling those trips. To blame the people who booked saying they should have known better is ludricrous. Perhaps the Local can provide the same pictures that Aftonbladet showed. Then the comments would not be so critical of the family. I don't think anyone here would have accepted what those families got for the money they paid.

@?????? Why should I feel offence by someone who doesn't know what he or she is?

I feel safer in Israel than I do in London, that's for sure. you should try Israel and then perhaps instead of signing yourself as ??????. you will be more positive !!!!!!!!

At least you can eat, drink etc without worrying about rats, salmonella, delhi belly, tap water is safe to drink etc. What sort of food do you like? I guarantee you wull find it in Tel aviv at least.

I would be afraid to go to a third world country. What were you thinking? Why would you endanger your family like that? You are lucky you were not kidnapped and held for ransom. Never go to mexico ever....they are no doubt the most barbaric people on earth besides muslims....
