Sweden Democrats lose Riksdag seat

The Sweden Democrats have a lost a Riksdag seat following a decision by William Petzäll to leave the party and sit as an independent as a result of his alcohol and prescription drug abuse.

The party has not yet been informed of his decision, according to the Expressen daily, and Petzäll remains listed on the Sweden Democrats' homepage.

There has been speculation in the media in the past week that Petzäll had fallen out of favour with the party leadership who harboured concerns over his parliamentary performance.

Petzäll was absent from a number of votes in the Riksdag last week without having submitted a request for sick leave.

According to Expressen, the 23-year-old plans to use his seat in the Riksdag to "push my pet issue and increase awareness. To develop more concrete measures to help young alcoholics and drug addicts."

"I am prepared to talk to all parties in the Riksdag where there is common ground for my pet issue," he said.

Petzäll was forced to take time out from politics in February after he turned up at a party in Trelleborg drunk, later spending the night in a police jail cell to sober up.

The party was being hosted by his ex-girlfriend and according to a police report Petzäll caused damage in his drunken state.

"What happened is obviously unacceptable. As one of the party's Riksdag representatives, one must always exercise good judgement," the Sweden Democrats' deputy Riksdag group leader Sven-Olof Sällström said in a statement at the time.

After a month out of the Riksdag to deal with his abuse of alcohol and prescription drugs, Petzäll returned pledging to leave politics if he erred again.

Attempts by The Local to reach William Petzäll for a comment have proved unsuccessful.

I pity Williams. I was actually in the same classl with him and I am amazed at what has become of him. Human being dont just change like dat. He is trying to be what he is not. I think that is plaguing him. It is a shame this is a person we voted for.

I HOPE HE CAN REDISCOVER HIMSELF BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

He'll get my vote !!!

I am my self in my late 20s and am not Swedish.

What baffles me is that this guy is 22 year old, so essentially just a kid. He cannot control his own life, how would you expect him to lead as a politician.

Swedish politics baffles me. Why can't you put people who have some real life experience as your leaders (you know, raised children, paid for a house, worked in a steady job for many years, can balance their cheque book, been a exemplary citizen, actually contributed back to Swedish welfare system for one).

Sweden does not need outsiders to destroy it's self. It can do so by electing more "kids" into power. Where are the union workers, where are community leaders? I think there is a very big vacuum here.
10:41 September 26, 2011 by truthworthy
Just as expected. They will vanish slowly and by 2014 they will be history.

These are kids who have no agenda but trying to ride the anti-immigrant train.

Politician in every country must be the good idol for the young generation.
10:51 September 26, 2011 by Indignerad
@hatim: Politics has become a career in every democratic, and undemocratic, country in the world. This is hardly a Swedish problem.
10:51 September 26, 2011 by Tysknaden
It is always wrong to bring persons of very low age into important positions. This boy is an example. He is misusing the voters trust. For his ongoing struggle with adolescence.
15:27 September 26, 2011 by iammucow
@hatim, it's a consequence of SD being a young party. They haven't had time to build up a roster of experienced politicians, so they take who they can get. It's one of the reasons SD members seem to be getting themselves into trouble so often. They're not used to be being public figures.
15:30 September 26, 2011 by Svensksmith
I hardly think of someone at 22 years old as being a boy. At 22 I was working and making a house payment.

That being said, this guy clearly has some problems.

this is a free gift for integrationist

now they will say we most bring even more immigrants to sweden and get them mixed to the originaries
18:03 September 26, 2011 by Tysknaden
@esvahnt: All immigrants are the same. I am an immigrant, too. I guess, this means, I do not have to involve myself into threads like this one. Spares me a lot of stress.

It is one thing to stumble. We all do, one time or another. It is another thing entirely to let down former collegues, voters and party activists by not stepping aside. That is a CHOICE, not weakness, not fumbling with life, not addiction. Just purely what we do not want in elected representatives.

@truthworthy

I truly wish we knew one another RL. Then you could put your money where your mouth is and i could earn some free cash :)

@ jostein,

"I truly wish we knew one another RL. Then you could put your money where your mouth is and i could earn some free cash :)"

i wouldn't recommend that for you!

by 2014, Sweden and the rest of the world will be seriously busy with other things then 'how many seats will SD get" ;)
20:53 September 26, 2011 by djmarko
And the cookie crumbles, the young politician probably found out his best friend was the son of immigrants and he felt guilty and decided to resign!!!
21:18 September 26, 2011 by philster61
If I was him I'd form the Gay party. He looks sooooo gay....
23:01 September 26, 2011 by jostein
@gh2008

Why not? You think it is a bad bet? Or you think @truthworthy is a boring aquaintence?
20:52 September 28, 2011 by JakeJensen
@philster61

Just in case you think it's funny or disparaging to "look gay" ... I'm glad to report that the reason he took a break from politics was one of his drunken acts of destruction in his girlfriend's apartment.

Officially, he's straight. I for one hope he keeps it that way.

I think sweden democrats, this time were taken by a surprise when they got so many votes. The problems we have seen this year coming from sweden democrats is perhaps because of them being unprepared (don't know if its un or im prepared whatever) . Perhaps their policies, members and politics will improve by next elections.

lol reminds of a political party in my country. They won the elections with unexpected high number of votes and clean sweep-ed few areas. They were taken by shock. So unprepared were they, that their politicians, who were in govt at that moment, were complaining about the policies of their own govt. :) Well I guess that was the last time we saw them in power
09:29 October 4, 2011 by philster61
Doesn't matter Jake. They all come out sooner or later. History is filled with closeted politicians and pastors and ministers.....Got nothing against gays.... especially this one...

It's good that William Petzall withdrew from The Sweden Democrat and sits as an

Independent in the Ridsdag or else he would have been asked to leave as I am

sure the Party concern is firm in their Party's code of ethics.A party that is weak in

their Code of Ethics and Rules wouldn't last long and The Sweden Democrat is

proving to the Swedish Public that the votes given to Sweden Democrat is not in

vain and I believe that more support would pour in for the Sweden Democrat in

the next Election due to the Party's understanding of what the Swedish Public want.
