Sweden runner up in 'reputation' ranking

Sweden has been placed second behind Canada in a ranking of countries with the best reputation in the world, in a new study linking a country's image with foreign investment and tourism receipts.

The study, from the New York-based Reputation Institute, measures the overall trust, esteem, admiration and good feelings the public holds towards these countries, as well as their perceptions across 16 different attributes.

“The study shows that a strong country reputation requires a solid performance across three different areas: having an advanced economy, an appealing environment and an effective government,” said Nicolas Georges Trad at the institute in a statement.

Canada heads the 2011 list, followed by Sweden, Australia, Switzerland and New Zealand.

The results are compiled from over 42,000 respondents worldwide and this is the third year that the Reputation Institute has released the study.

The study attributes the countries' strong reputations due to their high GDP, focus on active lifestyles, developed political systems and perceived neutrality to political upheavals.

The lowest ranked countries were Pakistan, Iran and Iraq while the US and China were ranked in the middle and lower tiers respectively.

Financial and political turmoil in developed areas of the world took their toll on the 2011 results with countries across the board recording lower scores.

"One of the most interesting findings of this year’s study was the significant decrease in the average score of all countries measured, suggesting a growing cynicism people have towards countries, possibly due to recent developments in the world economy and a general loss of faith in politics worldwide," the statement observed.

The study's other major finding was that "reputation means money". The study indicated that a country's reputation had a very strong correlation with respondents' desire to visit a country and to invest in its economy.

“When you consider that a 10 percent increase in your country’s reputation leads to an 11% rise in your tourism receipts, and a 2 percent increase in your FDI – this is something both countries and companies might want to take note of," Kasper Nielsen at the institute said.

In Germany, Sweden's image consists of: Astrid Lindgren, Ingmar Bergman, Mankell, Abba, longlegged blonde women, the landscape.

I hope Swedes get the message and I mean that in a nice way :-)

Well, the image of New Zealand (also on the top list) is one of clean countrysides and friendly inhabitants. Despite it having 75% of its waterways polluted and leading the world in child abuse. All countries are viewed by the outside world in a limited way and based almost entirely on the manipulated image projected outwards by that country.

The return of soviets. Tonight in Sweden movie theaters.

it reminds me of history of Russian communists. at that time everybody was thinking Russia is heaven base on Russian report model
14:44 September 29, 2011 by Streja
Yes gplusa is right!

rouzi, The Soviet Union never ended up in the top ten. The propaganda inside the country is not the same thing as this.

"Despite it having 75% of its waterways polluted and leading the world in child abuse."

I think you should go there and see if you can find 75% of its waterways polluted. You will be struggling...

I'd be curious where they get this figure from.

From another worthless study, no doubt.

Wow. In other news Sweden has just got the price of the second worse place to live in Europe.
17:02 September 29, 2011 by Smiling Canuk
Well, its nice to be ranked #1, but the reality is that these "studies" are for the most part quite meaningless. I would however agree that Pakistan, Afghanistan or Iraq are not particularly high ranking countries.
17:06 September 29, 2011 by kreed_uk
Oops, I forgot the link. However, as Smiling Caruk said, these studies are pretty much pointless.

@ Smiling Canuk

Agreed. It is like ...the neighbours grass always looks greener.

I am a citizen of Canada and Sweden. Maybe it is me who made it happen hahahahah

NOTE! - For all you people who are WAY WAY too serious, this is joke and I am not that insane enough to think this....yet ;-)

Interesting comment on New Zealand's waterways. I live in both Sweden and the South Island of New Zealand.. Our lakes are quite amazing. We have a lake/waterway called Pupu springs (Second clearish water in the world) It's nowhere near 75% But Polution is always a concern..! As for Child Abuse, yes it 's a problem, mainly in the Indigeous low socio group of society! New Zealand has an education policy in place..

42 000 of the world's 6 billion population....wow I really hope those 42 000 people knew the difference between Sweden and Switzerland!....Had they asked 42 000 in every given country I would take the outcome more seriously.
10:16 September 30, 2011 by Da Goat
This speaks volumes for the rest of the world if these countries came out on top the rest of the world must be pretty much "had the dick" our sick old world must be almost passed its use by date we better throw out our anchors so we don't go down the plug hole!

Oh bugger we threw out our anchor (Jesus Christianity) and forgot to tie the rope on ....... looks like we are sunk!
12:00 September 30, 2011 by gplusa
I take my NZ figures from 25 years of working for regional authorities in the South Island of that country. On that island alone, for anyone who knows the area, all open waterways within Canterbury, Otago, and Southland provinces are officially classified as being unfit for drinking. Southland has held that glorious status for the past 15 years. Got to love those dairy farmers.

Canada is has a good reputation; but I am not sure if it is a good country to live in. One should ask why about 10% of Canadians are living outside of Canada if it is such a good place. There is a good presence of Canadians here in this forum already...
15:42 September 30, 2011 by IWP
Canada easily outstrips Sweden. But why are Swedes so obssessed with this kind of nonsense? It's always the same: Best at this or that......insecure bunch of t***ers! Good to see them toppled, God knows it's needed!

Canadians are inveterate travellers and as such are visitors in every country in the world. One thing I've noted though is that there are invariably happy to come home.
