Cat attacks owner, gets stabbed

Published: 29 Sep 11 09:55 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/36428/20110929/

Ann-Britt Granström, 57, of Södertälje, south of Stockholm, had just curled up in bed next to her cat, her beloved bedfellow for the last 13 years, when the cuddly companion suddenly jumped down from the bed and started attacking her.

”The cat flew at me unprovoked and bit and scratched me all over my body. It hung by its mouth from my arm,” Granström told the local Länstidningen (LT) daily.

Granström tried to defend herself and managed to reach a neighbour who helped her phone the police.

But the emergency services were unwilling to help, advising her instead to clean the gashes and scratches on her arms by herself. This is not a matter for the police, they told the shaking Granström.

”They thought I should make my own way to hospital,” said Granström to LT.

But before she could do that she had to deal with the still furious feline.

The neighbour, who had donned rubber gloves, tried to lure the aggressive animal out from under the bed to where it had retreated hissing and spitting.

When the attempts to entice the cantankerous cat out were unsuccessful, the pair called on the help of some other neighbours, and three men came to their rescue.

“I hid in the bathroom and after the guys had all suffered bites to the arms as well, they finally managed to overpower the cat with a knife and kill it,” said Granström to the paper.

She phoned the police?? Jesus, what was she hoping they would do? Arrest it? !

I see that the Local's roving reporters are scouring the city for breaking stories...covered by other papers. Keep up the great work! I would rather read about this any day of the week then read a story about the Swedish economy. But one critique if you don't mind, could you include a picture of maybe say the cat in its rage, or the shocked Granström. By the way my cat did this once when it was protecting the other cat when we had cat sitters when we were away on vacation. The hid in the closet with ovenmits on. Thankfully they did not kill the cats though.
10:43 September 29, 2011 by RobinHood
She should have told them she had been attacked by her hedgehog. She would have have had half the Stockholm policeforce there in a flash.
10:47 September 29, 2011 by crofab
Something is very strange here. Rabies? What self-respecting cat owner would allow their cat to be killed after having it 12 years? And it does seem kind of funny to me that some Swedes expect the government and society to do EVERYTHING for them (and I am a socialist saying this...)
11:30 September 29, 2011 by Already in use
Brain tumor?

But why call the police? Even so, they could have been a little more sympathetic.
11:35 September 29, 2011 by sjuttiosjusköterskorpåsjukhuset
This is why I prefer dogs. So many say that cats are loyal. I don't know where they get that from. All the dogs I ever owned have always been loving and loyal. Can only say that about one cat that I owned, and it was the only female cat that I had, the other six were all males and unpredictable like this one in this story. And I'm all through changing litter boxes.
11:41 September 29, 2011 by pepsionice
Older cats go through a dementia-like phase on occasion...maybe ten percent of them. If the lady had simply left the cat for a couple of hours....it might have recovered somewhat.
11:42 September 29, 2011 by Kstock
Thanks for adding the picture The Local, now the article is complete, good work.

Horrible :-( Cant believe they killed him with a kitchen knife, in the flat...
11:49 September 29, 2011 by glenquagmaire
Cats are not domestic pets... what excatly do they do which makes the owners happy..other than looking cute( to few..i hate thier looks too)... but still i find people looking at cats going awww.. also cats here are seriously fat... they can hardly walk.. dogs are anytime better..

@glenquagmaire: You are just a cat-hater. You are fully entitled to be this way. But stop posting crappy comments.

And my friend thought his girlfriend's cat was a kitty assassin because it was rubbing up against him annoying his allergies. I think this one wins that title.

nanna picked the wrong mushrooms in the forrest again. no other reason for tripping out and killing your own cat...
13:52 September 29, 2011 by andyron2
@Robinhood....lol...looks like calling police or ambulance telling the true reason would never work here.......just say attacked by a hedgehog or python or cobra would work perfectly. I have a female cat of 13years which is always well behaved....even if it gets mad,i would have left in a room for few hrs alone.....Hard to believe, she killed her 13yr old bedmate.A gruesome murder news.wonder why it isnt on TV.

Animal rights activists on vacation?
14:37 September 29, 2011 by philster61
They should have thrown the cat out in the forest where the elk hunters could have "hunted" it.....

murderers!!!!
16:06 September 29, 2011 by soultraveler3
I can't believe someone would allow their pet of 13 years to be killed like that. It's horrible!

All responsible cat owners know that they sometimes can spaz out (vaccum, new people, a strange noise, brain ghosts etc. )and if you leave them alone for a bit they're fine. If they aren't okay after a while or if it's out of character for them, they need medical attention.

My guess is that she probably moved her arm weird and the cat thought that she was playing or something, many cats will hop under the cover to go after toes, arms etc. As a cat owner you need to be aware of and okay with the occasional scratch or nibble. If that's not what happened, there was probably something wrong with the poor thing.

Either way, she seriously overreacted by calling the police for some scratches and then having neighbors come over and murder the poor cat. It's sad.
17:04 September 29, 2011 by Douglas Garner
This is certainly a sad story. I will admit to angering my 12 year old cat over territory disputes on which of sleeps where in bed with my spouse.

Regarding the kind and loving dog comment... many years ago I had a corgy attack one of my stepsons friends, presumably unprovoked... he went right for the face. I was all for euthanasia, but the rest of the family wouldn't hear of it. The little dog lived out his remaining years in harmony with the world.
17:08 September 29, 2011 by anonymous4
Some woman in the USA had a pet chimp that she slept with. The chimp turned on her. She called a friend for help. The chimp tore the face and hand off the friend. The friend cannot see, had a face transplant, still has no hands. A human life is more valuable than that of an animal.
17:31 September 29, 2011 by Twiceshy
So the cat was hiding under the bed, instead of waiting to see what it does when it comes out they "overpower" it and kill it?

This story is just weird...

Get a dog instead.
19:50 September 29, 2011 by sherkovic
must be charged with animal cruelty.
21:15 September 29, 2011 by city_walker
It is very sad that this b**** allowed her pet of 13 years to be killed like this. And yes, she should be charged with animal cruelty.

It is a cat, not a fighter dog, it can't kill you! She should just have given the cat soe time in another room to call down. She was playing probably, got too far.
00:17 September 30, 2011 by Kevin Walker
I would just like to say to all of you,who think the cat should not have been killed. You do not

have any expierience of this situation, but I have.

We had a cat 10 years ago and one night ,I was playing with my 18 mth old baby boy,It was about 10 pm ,My mum and dad were over here for 2 wks.Anyhow all of a sudden our cat ran over and attacked my little boy .,the cat was trying to claw out his eyes and biting him on the chin,my father had to literally rip the cat off his face and chin.We were lucky that the cat did not claw hes eyes out. There was lots of blood and the attack was so ferocious ,that it felt like a murderer had come in my house and tried to kill my son.It was like the cat was pocessed with evil or something.I was so enraged and shaken with freight, that I went after this damn killer cat and strangled it to death.

Was I going to give the cat,the benefit of the doubt , was i,or take a chance with my sons life some other time,or give the cat

to another home ,and risk it happening again to some one else.So to all you Kat lovers out there, dont make comments, based on,that you think it is cruel to have killed the animal.

To the Woman ,I know how you feel, and the

right actionss were taken.
00:18 September 30, 2011 by Da Goat
They say women are like cats ! this story proves it, 13 years happy bed fellows then Bam they turn nasty and try to kill you! So don't trust cats or women.

she should have not panicked and grabbed the cat by the scruff and threw it out the window (does not matter which floor you are on) then sorted out her wounds.

The cat would have got a fright and the message (not good behaviour) and would have meekly returned home again when it was stabled out again. (and hungry)

07:59 September 30, 2011 by karex
I believe that I understand the move of calling the police. It is the police in Sweden who have the proper contacts and know who to call when there is an incident with an animal. If there were groups dedicated to this sort of thing (like animal rescue) people could call them instead. But here it's normally done by private citizens who happen to be specialists in some kind of animal disturbance or other. Hard to find out all the specialists in your area and then put them all in your telephone book.

#5, Brain tumor?

Sounds more like 5 brain dead swedes, overreacting bunch of blood thirsty idiots.
08:16 September 30, 2011 by Kevin Harris
Would some of the cat experts above enlighten us with the correct way to handle an unhinged cat had just bitten four people, one without provocation. Just so I can be prepared for when my cat turns into Norman Bates.
08:22 September 30, 2011 by budaboy
@Karex.

I bet it would only take a few minutes on the phone to a vetinarian to find out who to call in such a case, but that would cost money of course, makes more sense to kill it with a knive...
08:59 September 30, 2011 by anonymous4
This article has hopefully made people think before getting a kat for their children or themselves.
09:55 September 30, 2011 by Da Goat
Kevin the trick is not to be shy just grab it by the scruff and whip it into a bag or a towel before it gets its thoughts together, they will not attack if they are flying or falling (instinct). my local vet just reaches out and grabs them and they just behave themselves (they must know somehow that she is the boss and will not hurt them) if you are in charge they are not funny enough!

normally I just get bitten and scratched but "gentle persuasion" works also!

as the others have said if she had just left it be it would probably have settled down again .... if not call your local hunter ! Cats and women have the occasional brain snap whereupon you leave them be for a while (judging this time is the tricky bit)

better still open the door and release a terrier dog that will teach it a lesson LOL
10:18 September 30, 2011 by glenquagmaire
@ Tysknaden

1st. I am not a cat hater, I just dont like them as pet, i like dog's... and i love animals... and cat are not pets...they are cat..like thier other's in their species.. leopard/tiger...

So no matter how much we may try, someday they will show their true color.. this is based on common intelligence to all(except you)..

2nd, who the hell are you to tell me to do something.... or are you like a cat..though you live in a civilized society you act like someone who does not care for other's...

"the cat lived with a lady".This is not the same as saying"the lady lived with the cat".animals were born free!
13:14 September 30, 2011 by CCVB
Im sure that there was no need to kill the animal!!!! Just leave it alone for a bit so it can calm down, no need to kill it...again, that is not done to humans who attack humans nor animals so why does this happen when its only a cat after all, its not like it was a lion or tiger...and now, look at all the nasty comments about cats pppfff pathetic people!!!! Humans are far worse!!!!!!
15:31 September 30, 2011 by Tanskalainen

by the way , the polis are there to protect human life, not just bullen
22:01 September 30, 2011 by edvyan
That story creeped me out.

An adult couldn't even deal with a cat, and need the help of the police, how spectacular the evolution of human race. Why not give the cat a lethal kick? If you think your life is being threatened.
00:09 October 1, 2011 by crudstud
I know a man who was about 60 at the time that his cat attacked him after he came out of the shower. the attack was unprovoked. The suffering that man endured because of blood poisoning was incredible. Truth is, his suffering will never be over until he's dead. Terrible thing. and to the last commenter, you can't kick a stark raving cat in your bare feet!!
10:33 October 1, 2011 by Kevin Walker
I cant believe the rubbish people write on here

about safe guarding the cat and lertting it calm down, what a load of toffee.Did anyone take in my story ,and how serious it can become. If the cat has turned ,it should never be forgiven, just because it looks so cuddly and cute.Do like I had to do kill the damn thing. After all there is another 10 billion of the damn things in the world.

And no, Im not a cat hater,I have another cat now, years later ,after my terrible freightning expierience.with my baby boy.

I have a right to comment on here more than all of you because ,I went through what this woman went through, with my son,not to mention the terrible injections and medicine he had to endure.Cas have so much horrible poisonous toxins in there saliva.the treatment is horrible, specially for a 18month child.I rest my case.

I wonder if Swedish police have a special unit regarding animal trouble. In my country there are usually a local unit and a nationwide unit.

My girlfriend's grandmother had some trouble with a huge iguana that suddenly appeared in her living room. After she rang the emergency number it took less than an hour for the special unit of the local police to get there and take care of the animal.

A cat is a small feline and, whether this story is true or not, dealing with an irate animal should always be the duty of an expert. I suffer from cynophobia so I wouldn't be able to deal even with a docile puppy. I can understand this woman's fear.
