Here's hoping that Johnston is rather more down to earth and focused on representing Britain interests.
The diplomats that I have met have all been incredibly intelligent, hard-working, sober and professional, and have been entirely focused on representing their countries' interests. Hoorah Henries they are certainly not.
As for the 'white tie dinner parties', I would imagine that many diplomats would rather spend their evenings at home with their families or down the pub, rather than hobnobbing with some tedious industrialists or politicians out of office hours on behalf of their governments.
Have you met any Swedish ambassadors?
I have had the pleasure to have met many Swedish ambassadors in some 40 countries who always came to receptions I held. I agree with lurker that they where all sober, professional and always prepared to help in promoting Sweden and Swedish companies.
Looks like you have not met any
Since you seem to think that having met a few ambassadors is some kind of status symbol, I'll go with your values and one-up you:
I have been a dinner guest at several Swedish embassies. Four family friends, and one family member, are or have been ambassadors. These all, privately, lament that the intelligence and educational level of their colleagues is embarrassing compared to diplomats of other nations.
As for "sober," let's not go there.
