Swedes bask in late summer heat

Just when all but a few hardy souls had fished out their thicker coats from their wardrobes, the city of Hudiksvall measured a record high temperature of 25.6 degrees with the weekend promising more of the same.

Last time it came close was in late September 2006, when 25.3 degrees was reported. Normal temperature for this time of year is between 13 to 15 degrees, which makes this a truly unusual happening.
And there is still time to enjoy the bracing sun, at least in some parts of the country. Eastern Götaland, including Kalmar, Karlskrona and Växjö can expect temperatures of between 20 to 25 degrees the coming days.
Malmö and Stockholm will also see some of the high pressure that has been parked over central Europe in recent days, and experience temperatures of up to 20 degrees Celsius for another day or two, whereas people in northern Sweden might still need to keep their woolly jumpers on hand.
The warmer weather will linger until early next week, according to SMHI, with a few rainy interruptions, to then give way for what might be the official start of autumn.
SMHI defines the arrival of autumn as five consecutive days with a daily median temperature of 10 degrees Celsius or below.
"In a few days the weather will get cooler and more unstable," said Frost.
