Inmate beats female prison guard to death

A female guard at a jail south of Stockholm was killed on Monday after being beaten by an inmate, police have confirmed.

Police received a call shortly before 11am on Monday that the 25-year-old female guard had been severely injured in an altercation with an inmate at the Flemingsberg remand facility south of Stockholm.

Exactly what sparked the fight remains unclear, according to police.

According to the Aftonbladet newspaper, the attack occurred when the prisoners were on their way out to the prison yard for recess.

The paper cited unconfirmed reports that the guard was beaten with her own baton. She was taken to hospital and died less than an hour later.

“A minute ago we received confirmation that she has died. We're now carrying out an investigation into what actually happened,” Gunilla Terner, regional head for the Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården) in Stockholm, told the Expressen newspaper.

Terner confirmed that the incident occurred in the prison yard, but was unable to say if the guard's own baton had been used against her in the attack.

“We're investigating that,” she told the newspaper.

“We've heard the same information. But I can't confirm it.”

The inmate suspected to have carried out the fatal beating has been transferred to another remand facility and police have launched a preliminary investigation into suspected murder.

"We're conducting interviews right now and police investigators have started a forensic investigation," police spokesperson Hesam Akbari said in a statement.

Criminology professor Jerzy Sarnecki from Stockholm University said the incident was a "unique event".

"I can't remember a similar case like this and I've been working in criminology for 35 years now," he told the TT news agency

He added that Swedish remand centres are some of the most dangerous workplaces around.

"I can't emphasise enough how desperate these inmates can be," he said, pointing out that many of the inmates live under very restrictive conditions and may not have contact with anyone but their lawyers and jail employees.

"Many of them are in very poor mental shape and they are in for long periods of time," he said.

I wonder if the inmate was a 90-year-old woman from the Ukraine.
15:54 October 3, 2011 by Svensksmith
Now the inmate will have another year (or less) added to his sentence.
16:51 October 3, 2011 by Abe L
@Svenksmith, no that would be out of hand. I'm sure two voluntary counseling sessions will make him reflect differently over his action.

Kidding aside, he should get the same thing in return. Which is also positive for the taxpayer as locking people up is an expensive governmental hobby.

Was the inmate a He or a She? It doesn't say anywhere! And if it was a He, do prisons in Sweden have female guards for male prisoners? In such a case I can't help thinking of what kind of "movies" this would inspire to be made!!!!!

"Police received a call shortly before 11am on Monday".

Say what ?

Who was guarding them then?
18:51 October 3, 2011 by Migga
@ ?????

Yes it`s a 28 year old male.

The guard was a 25 year old female.

Why a 25 year old is guarding older criminals who are in jail for attempting murder is beyond me tho.
20:17 October 3, 2011 by jostein
@AnonCoward

Nope, 28 year old male swede from Södertälje.

My heart goes out for the guard and her family. My disdain is reserved for those who made this whole thing possible in the name of equity. What rational individual thinks a woman guarding a man, who cannot abide by societies rules, is a good idea. We are all equal before the law but not all equally qualified for all positions. Even a large muscular woman would be a target in this type of environment. The quote "Exactly what sparked the fight remains unclear" is a ridicules statement. This was not a fight, this was an attack. Guards do not "fight" with inmates, they manage them.
20:55 October 3, 2011 by boppe
The person had a record of unprovoked attacks. years back he used his sister to lure a guy out a bar and stapped him. And the reason his in there now is a few weeks ago he randomly stapped someone on the street..

Also it was 2 female guards with him. but during the attack insated of help the female her partner ran away and cost her the life most likley.

Staff in those facilitys has been undermanned for a time now but noone seem to care. maybe this case will open ppl minds.

Also allot of ppl is creaming after cases as this that guards need more weapon or way of defend themself. consider that she got overpowered and killed with her own nightstick. My point being the more weapons guards carry the more dangures it can be when inmates gets their hand on them. If she was unarmed she might lived today.

But I still don´t understand why you put a 24 year old female weighting 98LBS (taken from her facebook) to watch a 200 LBS guy who had previous record of randomly assaulting ppl with knives.
22:40 October 3, 2011 by zooeden
well my heart does not go out for the guards family, but I can tell you that it does not make sense that a 25 year old is alone with inmates older and meaner and basically are ticking bombs!!!! And then it goes: that they are in poor psico health and all and then they are set back to society!!! what a joke!
22:51 October 3, 2011 by shiraz
Why are people often mocking the compassionate and merciful legal and judicial system of Sweden ? It is a sign of their innocence that they are so lenient with crimes of the most horrendous nature and that is how the rest of the world should be. One horrifying crime is not justifiable by a horrifying punishment. Eye for an eye is the way of thinking of a broken and unfortunate people from a part of the world that has yet to catch up (or has been rather traumatized). We ought to be asking for an end to capital punishment now that EU has gone ahead very bravely and embraced compassion.
23:58 October 3, 2011 by johnoleson
@shiraz

Your compassion is misplaced. How about compassion for the random victims of those you are so compassionate for. This is the primary function of any government. This might sound cynical, but I doubt a judge or legislator would allow these things if it were them or their loved ones having to be in close proximity to these criminals who don't mesh with others.
08:11 October 4, 2011 by skogsbo
shiraz, you maybe a nice wine, but you have no idea of reality at all.
08:53 October 4, 2011 by jostein
About tragedy itself. I recon its hard to always succeed in having a full take on the inmates when they have just been arrested. I mean, the system works and we hear nothing. And then it works and we hear nothing. And then it works and we hear nothing. And then it works and we hear nothing. And then it fails and we hear alot.

(and i cant believe and respectable publication still use that "scientist" Jerzy Snackisnacki. He has thoroughly soiled his reputation by habitually claiming up is down and down is up and by habitually making bold statements without a shred of support in science. Or by deceitful and selective presentation of what science there is)

I'm sick of the fact that in Sweden everybody have to be the same; none shall be neither richer nor poorer than the other; none shall be neither smarter nor dummer than the other; none shall have neither white nor black skin; none shall be neither prettier nor uglier than the other.

Or in this case: none shall be neither stronger nor weaker than the other. Sure it's a good idea to let small females guard dangerous big males! Cause neither should you have a male nor a female sex - everyone in this country has to be exactly the same! It is as boring as it is insane.
10:33 October 4, 2011 by Streja
jostein is right. We never hear about when the system works, only when it fails as in this case.
10:37 October 4, 2011 by Jes
Who ever took the decision to let a 25-year woman work in a prison that is ful of male criminals must have his head examined .

I think that Sweden is taking this "equality" thing too far .

I would even say that men should not work in women prisons as this might cause sexual tensions.
10:43 October 4, 2011 by Kibitz
There it is.....as always in Sweden. An investigation??? Which we all know will amount to absolutely nothing. Why wasn't this guard granted the right to carry a fire arm? and where were the other guards during this altercation? Nothing unique about about putting unarmed and undermanned guards in a dangerous environment with violent offenders and the worse happens. If Sweden were as compassionate and understanding of the guards as they are to providing more rights and priviledges to criminals she might be alive today. When the humanitarian treatment of prisoners and their rehabilitation undermine the safety of workers and their safety, it would be a good approach to reevaluate conditions and prodedures and better training. I would imagine they could afford to do more with the working conditions, if they cut back on prisoner privileges like this prison which has private cell equipped with the following accomadations, bed, desk, chair, bookshelf, wardrobe and TV. There they never lock the cell doors. They only lock the door to the floor at nine in the evening and unlock it at eight in the morning. During all the other hours you are free to walk outside, go to the gym, etc. Actually sounds pleasant.

Well as sad as it is I'm not suprised - Feminists want equal rights and they are then entitled to do jobs that a man should have been doing. Sh*t happens I'm afraid
16:16 October 4, 2011 by johnoleson
When Sweden's policies clash with reality, reality needs to know its place and back down.
22:35 October 4, 2011 by crudstud
in my state jail in USA, the guards carry no weapons at all. seems to work out, but they certainly don't let woman guards in with men.
11:31 October 5, 2011 by Robbie619
As much as the US is becoming more and more feminist we aren't dumb enough to have females guarding males.....yet. Someone posted earlier that in Sweden everyone has to be the same which led to this situation and it's funny because it's so true. When I went to Stockholm in the summer during conversations with people they would bring up politics (I guess because I'm American) and I noticed they all had the same opinions.....and they thought I was brainwashed LOL Yeah I know there are some brainwashed Americans but I guarantee there is a much bigger difference in opinions here than in Sweden.
17:12 October 5, 2011 by t64
Au contraire, the US does sometimes use female prison guards to guard males. (http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/01/30/1523744/guard-killed-at-monroe-correctional.html) . Last January we too lost one due to equal opportunity. But unlike Sweden where everything is equal, 90% of our inmates and criminals are male. We have a lot to learn about equality. We still separate male and female prisoners. These biases can only be overcome by education.
