King slammed over award to Saudi monarch

Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf has kicked up a storm of controversy after giving a medal to Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah during a recent visit to the country.

Last Friday, the the Swedish king gave his Saudi counterpart the Wolf Bronze award, given by the World Scout Committee to acknowledge "outstanding service by an individual to the World Scout Movement".

King Carl XVI Gustaf serves as the organisation's honourary chair.

According to the Asian Tribune news website, the Saudi King also welcomed Carl XVI Gustaf in his private residence in al-Janadriyah.

“It's betrays a complete lack of judgment to, at a time when people in the region are demanding democracy, give a medal to the region's foremost dictators,” the Left Party's Hans Linde told the Expressen newspaper.

Social Democratic foreign policy spokesperson Urban Ahlin also found fault with the king's actions.

“It's extremely bad timing to travel there and honour the Saudi king. It's a bad signal to the people fighting for democracy and freedom,” Ahlin told TV4.

The Swedish branch of human rights organisation Amnesty also joined the chorus of criticism over the king's visit.

“We feel that the king, or any minister on official business, should adhere to our official position when it comes to human rights,” spokesperson Elisabeth Löfgren told the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

“In Saudi Arabia, there are incredibly serious human rights violations. The list can get very long and to honour King Abdullah, who is the utmost responsible, just gives it legitimacy.”

Prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt refused to comment on the matter on Monday.

“I don't think it's within my role to have opinions about medals connected to the Scouting Movement,” he told the TT news agency, adding that Saudi Arabia and Sweden do have diplomatic ties.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Anders Jörle also downplayed the visit, telling Expressen he “didn't see anything wrong” with the Swedish head of state offering a medal to the Saudi leader.

Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt also defended the king's actions.

“If you want to change the world, you have to go out in the world,” he told TV4.

"King Carl XVI Gustaf serves as the organisation's honourary [sic] chair."

Does that mean we can sit on him?

Very astute observation.

oppress a nation for decades, treat women like crap = get a medal from a swedish king?

dictators should only get one medal around their necks, a noose.

Just exactly WHAT message IS Sweden sending? What message has Sweden EVER been sending as a 'neutral' nation of contradictory flip-floppers, from its government to its monarchy to its people?
11:52 October 4, 2011 by rouzi
Come on! It is not the first time that western countries support a dictator. Previously it was in conceal, this time it is open. Who care about people. Sweden needs oil plus number of poor people to come here and drive buses. Theses are the only important things.
12:30 October 4, 2011 by truthworthy
What is the outcry ? Sweden and western countries support worse dictators such as Melez Zenawi.

The Saudi King at least feeds his people.
12:37 October 4, 2011 by Douglas Garner
@70 and others... The message the King is sending... if you do good things, such as support the scout movement (which supports wonderful ideals) you can be recognized. Any reasonable person will reward good behaviour, and this has no relationship to bad behaviour other than to encourage more good.

#16 Juste to clarify, im really not opposed to the king handing out medals to saudis in any way. Nor am i opposed that the royal family follows the rules of conduct in the country they are visiting. Its just common curtesy and respect for other people.
21:50 October 4, 2011 by Ivan Juric
When you think about it both are quite similar, one is a king of a nation that treats women like crap the other a king of a nation that treats men like crap.
21:51 October 4, 2011 by crunchy2k
@jostein (#16) A picture released by the(?) Saudi Press Agency shows the queen. I see this insignificant gesture that just tickles the Saudi Kings ego as a way of keeping this home of terrorism close. Remember the old saying, 'Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.'

The King did recently say woman are going to be able to run for local political office.
23:35 October 4, 2011 by wxman
This would be OK with me if the medal had an explosive in it.

The left's party slams the King. That's what leftist do. Just a bunch of haters.
04:33 October 5, 2011 by RaycerX
The proper response wouldn't be to give him a medal, but to puke all over him instead.

@#20 Actually he treats both women and men like crap, only different classes of crap.

Russia and China mean two groups of unwise guys in leaderships-who are scared of being challenged in the same manner for upcoming brutality on their part as there will be no more tolerence of production of arms, violent crackdowns on public etc., otherwise why do they should care for kings that are are bound to be powerless, in the naturally created demand of the time.
18:51 October 6, 2011 by graceolsson
I did not see any sense with the KIng Attitude. Those who deserve a medal in Saudi Arabia are the women who live under the power of a dictator.

As a Swede, I feel that it´s time to dethrone the King Gustav.
21:34 October 6, 2011 by Dave N
I wonder if that "sorcerer" who was executed by having his head cut off in Saudi last week was in the Scouts.
18:13 October 7, 2011 by Ranger
The King should stay home and clean up his own house first before he parades around with his phony medals and peace prizes. Start by cleaning up Sweden's corrupt courts and dishonest politicians.
01:02 October 8, 2011 by Catarin
I believe the king is one Saudi who deserves recognition. During his time as king, he has advanced the rights of his people more than anyone else.

He has encouraged co-ed university schooling, acted against clerics in their treatment of women (women will get to vote in 2015) and has reversed some sentences of citizens as unfairly harsh.

The wahhabi version of Islam practiced in Arabia is a mean spirited version of Islam. Funny how in the land of Mohammed this sect does the opposite of what Mohammed did. Mohammed had respect for women which doesn't exist with these Wahhabi clerics.

Eventually they will lose power. I admire King Abdullah for doing as much for his people as he has.
07:14 October 8, 2011 by JohnBrianShannon
Since Abdullah became King, there have been 2 successful municipal elections with EU monitoring, he has cracked down on terrorists in the Kingdom, foreigner's are now allowed into the country to conduct business, own companies and property.

The rule of law is being strengthened and more evenly applied.

Also, many people have been pardoned or had severe sentences reduced - for expatriates who break Saudi laws, they are now allowed to go home and serve their sentences there - if their own country will take them back.

He is building Universities at an astonishing rate and hiring the best Profs. available from Europe, Japan and North America.

Unbelievably, for the world's largest petroleum producer, he is changing electrical-power-generation away from fossil-fuels - to solar & nuclear.

Women can own their own business and work in stores (previously they didn't).

Things have been a certain way there for many decades. It will take time. Keep informed by reading the Arab News - The Middle East's leading daily online newspaper. arabnews.com

It seems ludicrous for Sweden, being one of the most liberal of countries towards the rights of women, to bestow any form of medals to one, it not, the most oppressive of countries against the rights of women. A hand shake would have been enough.

And if anybody had any doubts about europe falling to islam, this should be your answer!
09:44 October 9, 2011 by dreddie
Is this medal for the successful oppression of the Bahrain and Awamia protests, or in approval of the sentencing of Bahraini doctors to 15 years in prison by a puppet military court over the charge of treating injured protesters?
09:47 October 9, 2011 by JohnBrianShannon
#36 Skip --- FYI -

It's hardly a scientific survey encompassing all of Europe.

Since 1960 the number of Muslims world-wide has tripled (presently at 1.8 Billion)

Since 1960 the number of Christians world-wide has doubled (presently at 2.0 Billion)

I don't think the Muslims want Europe, there are far, far more people in Africa and Asia to convert, by the way, these two continents are fertile ground for Christian Churches to find converts also.

Or, can you? Stand up like a bc ferry, or whatever you are -- AND STATE YOUR CASE.

Try using you're real name in order to be credible. Put your name to your accusations. I do.

TO: bcferry re: your post #39

On the World-Wide-Web website named thelocal.se you posted a comment at 13:58 October 9, 2011, in reference to an article entitled, "King slammed over award to Saudi monarch" which was published 4 Oct 11 08:45 CET.

The "post number" for your comment is #39. I feel the comments you made within that post are offensive and those comments of yours are what I hereinafter refer to.

You quoted part of my overall comment contained within my post #38 as saying; "Since 1960 the number of Muslims world-wide has tripled (presently at 1.8 Billion)." Those are my words and opinions and I stand by them.

To which you replied; "It's simple, breed like rabbits, threaten to kill apostates."

I find your sentence offensive. You insinuate that Muslims have been "breeding like rabbits" in order to reach 1.8 Billion. You further assert that Muslims "threaten to kill apostates" - does that mean all Muslims "threaten to kill apostates"? All 1.8 Billion of them? Do you really believe that?

It is my opinion that such statements breach the decorum expected of civilized human beings. I think that most humans would agree - although I have been accused of having high standards and expecting the same of my fellow human beings. Why not?

You have been asking a lot of questions of me in this forum. I think that I too, have the right to ask questions of you. And, if not, why not?

Further in the same post you again quoted part of my overall comment contained within my post #38 as saying; "I don't think the Muslims want Europe, there are far, far more people in Africa and Asia to convert, by the way, these two continents are fertile ground for Christian Churches to find converts also. " Again, those are my words and opinions and I do stand by them.

To which you replied; "C'mon, they want it all, and will settle for nothing less."

What does that mean? They want all of something, according to you - but what? What is that something that "they" want, "and will settle for nothing less." Do you mean Muslims and Christians - because my sentence referred to both religions?

It seems like an accusation. If it is - name it! Inquiring minds want to know. You are the one who posed this statement. Is there something we should know? Why the mystery? Do tell.

You continued onto your last line of post #39 by saying; "Religion of peace Forced Conversion".

It looks like some kind of slogan. Is it? What does that mean? It obviously means something to you, or you wouldn't have said it.

It seems to me that the general theme of your post #39 is (and I do apologize for paraphrasing your words here); 'Muslims (and possibly Christians) are breeding like rabbits in an effort to take over the whole world by forced conversion, whilst pretending to be religions of peace.'

Little school girl,

84%: of Egyptians believe apostates should face the death penalty.

Majority of Today's Muslims favor Death for Apostates For almost 1,400 years, the punishment for apostasy has been death. Only recently has this been challenged, mainly by Islamic apologists in the West.

A Pew poll released on December 2, 2010, found that even today "The majority of Muslims would favor changing current laws in their countries to "allow stoning as punishment for adultery, hand amputation for theft, and death for those who convert from Islam as their religion".[18][19][20] To give you an idea of the kind of figures we're dealing with, we'll use Pakistan as an example; the 2010 poll found that 76% of Pakistanis agree apostates are to be killed. In a country with a population of 172,800,000[21] (96% of whom are Muslim)[22] that would be 126,074,880 individuals in a single country. Conversely only a mere 13% of Muslims opposed killing apostates.

If we are to assume the politically-correct position that, Muslims who espouse such views are extremists who misunderstand the 'peaceful' teachings of Islam, then we must also concede the fact that the majority of Muslims in the world are extremists. They are not simply a 'fringe group'.

Multiculturism and Weak Governments"

Excerpt,

"One would think at these rates, the population of Europe would be in a freefall. But it isn't, it's growing by leaps and bounds. So who are these people supplementing the population of Europe? Islamic immigrants. Since 1990, 90% of all immigrants to Europe are muslims. Across the 31 countries that comprise the European Union, the fertility rate is an average of 1.38.

France: Fertility Rate is 1.8 per family, while Muslims account for 8.1 children per family. In southern France, there are now more mosques than churches. In small French towns, 30% of children under the age of 20 are Muslim. In the larger towns, that number jumps to 45%. In 2027, a mere 16 years away, 1 in 5 Frenchmen will me Muslim. In less than 40 years, France will be an Islamic nation.

England: 1.6...In the last 30 years, Muslims have increased their population from 82,000 to more than 2.5 million. There are more than a thousand mosques, many of them former Christian churches.

In the Netherlands, 50% of all births are Muslim. At this rate, within 15 years, half of the population will be Muslim.

In Russia, 1 out of 5 Russians are Muslim, which means that 40% of Russia's vast army will be comprised of Muslims within just a few years. Belgium, 25% of the population are already Muslim, and over 50% of the newborns are, too.

According to Germany's Federal Statistics Office, "The fall in German population can no longer be stopped. Its spiral is no longer reversible. It will be a Muslim state by the year 2050."

It's simple, breed like rabbits, threaten death to apostates.
