Juholt to SVT: don't have Åkesson stand so close to me

Published: 7 Oct 11 16:10 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/36616/20111007/

The leaders of the Social Democrats and the Left Party on Friday declined to participate in an upcoming debate to avoid having to stand next to Sweden Democrat party leader Jimmie Åkesson.

“We have taken the logical decision to decline participation,” Social Democrat spokesperson Nina Wadensjö told the TT news agency in reference to a televised party leader debate on Sveriges Television (SVT) scheduled for Sunday evening.

“We do not want to stand with the Sweden Democrats, it is unthinkable for us.”

The Left Party spokesperson Ted Bergdahl concurred.

"The placement that SVT wants gives the image of a united opposition, which we aren't," he told SVT, arguing that the placement should be decided by lottery.

On their website, the Social Democrats explained that they couldn’t accept how the show was arranged, since the placement of the party leaders implied that the Social Democrats formed a “common opposition” with the Sweden Democrats.

The Social Democrats' arguments, however, didn't sit will with producers at SVT.

“We see these parties’ actions in this case as difficult to justify, and unacceptable in principle,” SVT Programme Director, Jan Axelsson said in a statement.

"What would the parties have said it it had been the Sweden Democrats or the Alliance which had demanded changes in the studio?"

Before declining, the two parties had demanded a change in the arrangements for the show, but without success.

Axelsson explained that the party leaders would be standing in a half-moon formation, with their own separate desks, and not behind a long desk where one might seem that all the opposition parties were cooperating.

“No viewer could misinterpret that situation.”

The Sweden Democrats' Åkesson found humour in the actions of the Left Party and the Social Democrats.

"I laughed at first. I was really surprised," he told SVT, adding that “their sandbox behaviour has reached new dimensions.”

SVT head Eva Hamilton defended the broadcaster's stance.

“It is unthinkable for us to allow political parties to pose ultimatums and dictate arrangements in our shows,” she said in a statement.

Invitations for the debate were sent out last spring and all the parties accepted without comment. It was only after SVT presented how the leaders would be arranged in the studio that the parties started protesting.

I support Juholt in this, kinda brave to just give SVT the finger. The rule of the journalist has to come to an end. They wish our destruction.
20:15 October 7, 2011 by calebian22
"Axelsson explained that the party leaders would be standing in a half-moon formation,"

Juholt should just pull his pants down to full moon and wait for more defectors to the Sweden Democrats in the next election. What a fool.

One of the problems with the democratic system of government is that, from time to time, you don't like the politics of the other parties. However, significant numbers of Swedes have elected the SD into Parliament, and their votes must be respected.

Both the Social Democrats and the Left Party need a lesson in basic democracy. No news there I suppose.

Juholt should just wear loose pants so his excitement at being close to Jimmy won't show.

Great disrespect of the so called "most democratic" party.

He's definately not doing himself a favor by this childish act but maybe he knows he's going to get a lot of flak for his "Mona Salin stunt" and doesn't want to see the led coming his way.

So why not blame it on someone else.
09:14 October 8, 2011 by Grokh
isnt that discrimination? lol
09:29 October 8, 2011 by Attestupa
Like it or not, the democratic system has shown its preferences. If the Social Democrats wish to be seen as being worthy of their name they have to accept that, or else they are devaluing democracy.
09:35 October 8, 2011 by OUIJA
Åkesson dresses better than Juholt and has proven to be smarter. It would be a good idea if Juholt learns something from Åkesson. Juholt should be grateful to SVT for the time given to exposes his "political ideas". Good for SVT for not letting this clown to try to change the rules of the program. Good for Hamilton.
09:48 October 8, 2011 by Frank Arbach
Maybe Mr Juholt just didn't have anything important to say, and was scared of a debate...?
10:02 October 8, 2011 by OUIJA
Juholt having something important to say? Juholt?
12:04 October 8, 2011 by Smile123
Juholt is right,

Standing beside fascists does not make any leader comfortable. You cant convince an extremists/fascists because they are sick in their mind. So it is better to avoid speaking with them.

"Standing beside fascists does not make any leader comfortable. You cant convince an extremists/fascists because they are sick in their mind"

Totally agreed. That is exactly why Jimmy wants to stop the flow of hundreds of thousands extremists/fascists into this country. Because you cannot convince them, since they are sick in their mind.

The Captain Kangaroo look-alike says he supports democracy yet feels some people have no right to participate in democracy.

Who has a sick mentality?
14:16 October 8, 2011 by jostein
@Smile123

In a debate you do not try to convince the person that you are speaking with. You are trying to convince the listeners.

Like right now when i comment your post for example, I do not make you believe any more in the democracy and the peaceful battle of ideas. I do, however, make you look ignorant and I do expose you as an enemy of democracy. See how that works?
16:53 October 8, 2011 by Iraniboy
Juholt and his party have got the vote of 30% of Swedes mainly due to their strict policy against any right wing party and that sort of ideology. So for those of you whining about democracy, this is actually the result of democracy! The main question remains why they had sometimes similar votes with SD against Alliansen!!!

Thousands of people died as a result of delayed peace talks in the Viet Nam War. The reason for the delay: They argued for months, over the shape of the table!!! Square or round? Unbelievable.

Get your act together, use some common sense.
00:57 October 9, 2011 by Uncle
ctinej

It was a negotiation move of the Northern Vietnam to show that they are not in a hurry anywhere, while the pressure on the american politicians was mounting exponentially. They pre-paid for a villa rent in the US for 2 years forward to stress the US.

This is taught in any negotiation tactics course. As a result, N. Vietnam got 100% of their demands. This is #1 common sense example and unfortunately does not fall under your criteria.

Just felt that I need to clarify this.

Julholt is as good as toast. His party has now had two fraudsters at its reign. Steal from the poor and pocket themselves.

The only ammo they have against SD is racism. How pathetic isn't that.

SD wants to have the sam immigration politics as in the 60's and guess who was in power at that time. Yup the cronies of Julholt.
12:24 October 9, 2011 by Iraniboy
@bells on the knight

It's not just Socials who think SD is Xenophobic, if you read the news correctly you'll notice that all right wing parties in Sweden say the same thing about SD!

Many things have changed since 60s, for some of us in Iran and the US and vast majority in Sweden(ca. 95%) the moral values have changed so we have learned to respect other people's way of life as long as they don't pick on others!!!
21:38 October 9, 2011 by Uncle
"so we have learned to respect other people's way of life as long as they don't pick on others!!!"

Spot on iraniboy. Nobody has a problem with asian immigrants, with latin americans, or the christians from muslim countries.

However statistics show clearly that MAJORITY of swedes avoid areas dominated by muslim refugees, do not put their children in the schools where muslims are a significant percentage, do not buy the cars that are associated with the "pizza boys", generally refrain from hiring muslims and have their "kumbaya" moments only in theory - as long as your countrymen are invited to an area FAR AWAY from where the 95% actually live and work. (You see, on other forums your muslim buddies whine non-stop about "cold and racist" swedes while you are singing songs of love and respect of 95% here. Choose.)

Why are the swedes so reluctant to hug you and sing "we will overcome", while making you bank managers without even checking your background?

Because "as long as they don't pick on others" theory ceased a long time ago in islamic world and this population somehow constantly "picks on others" in one way or another.
00:06 October 10, 2011 by rumcajs
@uncle,

I'm not muslim, but it's realy annoying the way you put all muslims in the same bag. I'm a musiciant who wanna have peacefull job to pay my bills and give a good time to people on friday and saturday nights (when given the chance)........... but people like YOU might think I'm a drug dealer or a hitman just because I was born in Colombia. all Chinese know kung fu, all Japanese are IT gurus and make robots, all Americans are stupid, etc............ GIMME A BRAKE!!!!!!!
11:23 October 10, 2011 by Uncle
rumcajs

" it's realy annoying the way you put all muslims in the same bag"

The problem is that some people do not read the comments they are responding to, rumcajs. If you would read, you would actually notice that I do not discuss muslims, but swedes. Now, you would also notice that I am very careful with the terms "statistically" and "generally".

One does not have to be a genius in order to comprehend that muslim immigrant areas are not the most desired areas on "Hemnet" and immigrant dominated kindergartens are not the most favourite in swedish society. Which is an argument about swedes.

This is just to prove that iraniboys "statistics" based on lack of mass voting for SD are not based on the hard reality.

In addition, it would be also great if you would not mix islam with origin of a person. It is like saying "one cannot put all nazis in one bag" or "one cannot assume things about communists". There are default concepts in muslim philosophy that are by definition shoving all ideologists in this same bag and therefore could be discussed in general as something that people DO, not ARE.

You follow? If you would not be brainwashed with "racism" slogans, you would notice that I never mentioned Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan or Syria in the previous post.
12:16 October 10, 2011 by Jes
Eva Hamilton called it "our shows" !!!

I show like the one about who can eat 34 hot dogs in 5 minutes !

We have come to this ? No wonder somebody boycotted the whole thing .

Personally , I would only stand next to stan in hell . While I am still free , I would chose to stay away and change my tyres instead.
