Frosty night ahead for most of Sweden

The night between Saturday and Sunday promises to be cold throughout Sweden with a risk of frost all the way down to the southern coast.

According to meteorological institute SMHI, Saturday night is expected to be the coldest night thus far this season. In the northern mountains, which are partially covered by snow already, temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius are possible.

"Skies across the country will be clearing up, leading to below-zero temperatures as far south as Götaland," said Lisa Frost, on-duty meteorologist at SMHI, to news agency TT.

The Götaland coast and perhaps also the coast along eastern Svealand are the only areas which may avoid below-zero temperatures tonight.

Sunday looks set to bring rain to southern Sweden, and snow as far south as Dalarna's mountains, in central Sweden.

"Precipitation will take the form of snow in Härjedalen, Jämtland and Västerbotten, and as far south as Dalarna's mountains."

Over the coming days, several precipitation chances will be passing over Sweden.

"This means nights won't be as cold, with more clouds covering the country. In the south, temperatures may reach 10 degrees Celsius, while northern temperatures will hover around zero," said Lisa Frost.

But despite frost nights and precipitation, autumn has not yet reached all of Sweden.

Meteorological autumn, when average temperatures sink below 10 degrees Celsius for five days running, has thus far reached northern Svealand, according to SMHI. Southern Sweden still enjoys meteorological summer.
