Swedish mum shoots five elk in four hours

Published: 14 Oct 11 11:40 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/36746/20111014/

A 37-year-old mother of two from northern Sweden had an unprecedented hunting outing on Thursday when she managed to fell five elk in four hours, propelling her to nationwide fame.

In Jana Hedin Alsin’s hunting company by Hudiksvall in northern Sweden, hunters are assigned an area by lottery, and this day she hit the jackpot.

“We had just started up the shift when the first three elk came waltzing by,” Hedin Alsin told The Local.

“There was no dog chasing them so that’s why they were so calm, and I could just take them down.”

After having felled the three animals, the mother of two started field dressing them, the procedure of removing internal organs of hunted game to preserve the meat.

She then stepped back to her designated area.

But she wouldn’t have much time to catch her breath, because about an hour later, two more animals stepped into Hedin Alsin’s sights.

Thus, a mere four hours after setting up in the previously untested spot, Hedin Alsin decided to call it day, having filled half the area's yearly adult elk hunt quota herself, which got her team talking.

“At first they were a bit reticent, but then they were just happy for me,” she said.

And her success spread fast through the village of Hassela Kyrkby, home to a few hundred people.

A couple of text messages and it seemed no one had missed the big news.

“Some people I barely knew congratulated me too, it was funny,” she said

Since then, the story has spread to Swedish wire services and a number of nationwide newspapers.

On Friday, her rifle will have to stay put at home since Hedin Alsin has a day job to attend to, but unless her team fills the rest of the quota, she will be back out in the weekend.

Does not sound like sport to me. Try shooting cows in the pasture for real thrills.

Congratulations to her!!! Kill em and grill em.

More sporting than hunting tofu.

Why does anyone in the modern world need to shoot that many animals?

I agree with johnjohn, it doesn't even sound like sport. :/

Modern Homo sapiens have been around, what ?, a 100,000 -200,000 + years. The razor thin edge of what is called modern industrial technological civilization that the 1st World nation live on has been around for a little over 100 years. ( remember a lot of humans live to be 90-95-100 years old) My point ? All you college educated, self-styled intellectual, "civilized", vegetarian, socialist, 21st century new-age folks still got one foot in a cave and a spear in your hand.......its all just an illusion of supremacy. Remember the Balkan War, Hurricane Katrina in the USA, Muslim Jihadists, the Norwegian Massacre........in a split second the illusion can disintegrate and skill with firearms, knowledge of how to hunt, could mean the difference between you and your loved surviving and thriving or dieing in the most miserable and violent way(s). As I read global news and watch TV reports I unfortunately feel it is all going to get a helluva a lot worse before it gets any better. Having some Elk meat in the fridge and a hunting rifle in the closet maybe is not such a bad idea.

20:49 October 14, 2011 by stillwatersrd
That's one hell of a lot of meat. How do you go about hauling that many carcasses out of the woods? How is the meat distributed?

Elk is not indigenous to Sweden, however moose is. The English word for "älg" is moose.

Elk, (Cervus canadensis) only exists in north America/Asia. Not in Sweden, proper translation is of paramount importance.
00:56 October 15, 2011 by JPersson
@andosh The english word for älg is elk. The american word for älg however is moose.

An elk was an elk long before columbus discovered america.

How much is The Local being paid to publish countless articles promoting Sweden as an elk-hunting destination?

Anybody who engages in this primitive pursuit is clearly doing it to anesthetise their deep feeling of low self-worth. Sad.

Sarah Palin would love her. Is this "Mum" a Sarah Palin look-a-like?
08:19 October 15, 2011 by GlennSigtuna
It is a sad day for Sweden, when a Mum is newsworthy for gross overindulgence of killing!

One elk can feed a family with two children for a year!

Hey Mum...what about "LAGOM?" ....enough IS enough....moderation lady!
09:49 October 15, 2011 by OUIJA
I would like to red about an elk, moose or whatever, making "potatismos" of five Swedish hunters. That would be a story to read about, not this one praising a "mum" killing five elks

(elks, TL, not eolk) in four hours.
10:24 October 15, 2011 by StockholmSam
Pure bloodlust. The woman could have stopped at one or maybe two but the thrill of killing was too overpowering for her to resist.

How she can become more famous:

Kill 20 kitty cats in one afternoon in the same neighborhood.

Run over 5 neighborhood dogs with your car in 24 hours.

And to the religious nut who has educated us about King Salomon....please tell me why Noah didn't swat the last two mosquitoes when he had the chance??

That's alot good eatin!
19:04 October 15, 2011 by zeulf
the NORTH American word is Moose, Please include the Canadians in this usage, and @ #19 ELK is the Plural of Elk , no "s" needed for some reason
20:37 October 15, 2011 by GlennSigtuna
Big number animal killing makes you famous in Sweden.

Sick hunter...sick story....the editor of this news should be ashamed.

The 37 year old Mum is too self centered to get any of this.

You write the finest 'justification' of hunting I have ever seen or heard:

"Anybody who engages in this primitive pursuit is clearly doing it to anesthetise their deep feeling of low self-worth. Sad."

Finally I get some handle of understanding about 'hunters'. Many thanks.

"...the first three elk came waltzing by."

"...they were so calm, and I could just take them down."

Well, my congratulations to you, Mum of 37 !! You much feel so proud of taking away the lives of five magnificent conscient creatures.

Is this a value which Sweden finds acceptable? Perhaps it's time to start building bull rings? And then we could throw christians to the lions. And what about public hangings in the main square. All good clean fun.

That's an awful lot of lies to have hanging around you. What's the attraction?
18:43 October 16, 2011 by sendia
I am not a hunter or a supporter for hunting as sport but...

All you people condemning about this are you vegetarians? you dont use products where animal testing is involved, starting with medicines? and you dont own leather products?

Animal testing and industrial farming of animals for meat is much more cruel, the environment in industrial farming is nothing like the animals natural habitat.

so .............

Wow, a lot of you have no idea about elk hunting in Sweden!

"One elk can feed a family with two children for a year!"

Yes, that is what these elks will do. The hunting companies/teams usually divide the meat between the member according to some rules they have set. Sometimes it is a lottery and sometimes the person who shot the elk gets a free lot. In any case the meat is cut up into fine parts and deep frozen and eaten during the rest of the year. Elk meat is a substantial part of the householding in many families in Sweden.

Someone asked how the carcasses are transported out of the forest. The hunting companies/teams either carry them out with manual power or have a small tractor to pull them out. The elks are then taken to a cool place to hang for a few days. Sometimes a refridgerated container is used. Then the hunting companies/teams gather to butcher the bodies and divide the meat.

The reason that so many elks are show during a short period is that this is the hunting season. We don't hunt elks in the summer because the elk cows have small calfs then and during the late winter there is too much snow and often bad conditions for the elks.

From my point of view, elk meat is ethical and environment friendly. I prefer to eat it rather than any animal from the meat industry.
21:08 October 16, 2011 by skogsbo
littlemu, good points, there is also a quota on just how many can be shot, depending on age and sex, or number of calfs with the cow.
00:42 October 17, 2011 by Keith #5083
so it seems the defence of hunting falls into roughly 4 main points:

1. to control the elg population - for their own good.

2. to feed all the starving families in Sweden with food that has no hygeine regulation controls on it.

3. to lessen the degree of cruelty we inflict on the animals in the world.

4. to teach a lesson to all those armchair (vegetarian) critics.

Ah well, tradition is tradition!

@ littlemu

"Wow, a lot of you have no idea about elk hunting in Sweden!"

Agreed

"The hunting companies/teams usually divide the meat ... sometimes the person who shot the elk gets a free lot...

The person who shoots the elk is always rewarded the heart and the head.
16:52 October 18, 2011 by Whynot8
If you are communicating with someone in American English the word "älg" translates to "moose". If you are communicating with someone from Great Britain, that obscure little island off the coast of Sweden, use should say "elk". Of course that person has probably never seen or heard about an elk, and won't know what you are talking about and care less. So keep it simple and call the animal a moose.
