"Hej! How is your Swedish coming along? I have received many questions on the Facebook page and in my email lately and it seems like a good idea to post the answers here. Enjoy! More sporting than hunting tofu.
I agree with johnjohn, it doesn't even sound like sport. :/
Elk, (Cervus canadensis) only exists in north America/Asia. Not in Sweden, proper translation is of paramount importance.
An elk was an elk long before columbus discovered america.
Anybody who engages in this primitive pursuit is clearly doing it to anesthetise their deep feeling of low self-worth. Sad.
One elk can feed a family with two children for a year!
Hey Mum...what about "LAGOM?" ....enough IS enough....moderation lady!
(elks, TL, not eolk) in four hours.
Kill 20 kitty cats in one afternoon in the same neighborhood.
Run over 5 neighborhood dogs with your car in 24 hours.
And to the religious nut who has educated us about King Salomon....please tell me why Noah didn't swat the last two mosquitoes when he had the chance??
Sick hunter...sick story....the editor of this news should be ashamed.
The 37 year old Mum is too self centered to get any of this.
You write the finest 'justification' of hunting I have ever seen or heard:
"Anybody who engages in this primitive pursuit is clearly doing it to anesthetise their deep feeling of low self-worth. Sad."
Finally I get some handle of understanding about 'hunters'. Many thanks.
"...they were so calm, and I could just take them down."
Well, my congratulations to you, Mum of 37 !! You much feel so proud of taking away the lives of five magnificent conscient creatures.
Is this a value which Sweden finds acceptable? Perhaps it's time to start building bull rings? And then we could throw christians to the lions. And what about public hangings in the main square. All good clean fun.
That's an awful lot of lies to have hanging around you. What's the attraction?
All you people condemning about this are you vegetarians? you dont use products where animal testing is involved, starting with medicines? and you dont own leather products?
Animal testing and industrial farming of animals for meat is much more cruel, the environment in industrial farming is nothing like the animals natural habitat.
so .............
"One elk can feed a family with two children for a year!"
Yes, that is what these elks will do. The hunting companies/teams usually divide the meat between the member according to some rules they have set. Sometimes it is a lottery and sometimes the person who shot the elk gets a free lot. In any case the meat is cut up into fine parts and deep frozen and eaten during the rest of the year. Elk meat is a substantial part of the householding in many families in Sweden.
Someone asked how the carcasses are transported out of the forest. The hunting companies/teams either carry them out with manual power or have a small tractor to pull them out. The elks are then taken to a cool place to hang for a few days. Sometimes a refridgerated container is used. Then the hunting companies/teams gather to butcher the bodies and divide the meat.
The reason that so many elks are show during a short period is that this is the hunting season. We don't hunt elks in the summer because the elk cows have small calfs then and during the late winter there is too much snow and often bad conditions for the elks.
From my point of view, elk meat is ethical and environment friendly. I prefer to eat it rather than any animal from the meat industry.
1. to control the elg population - for their own good.
2. to feed all the starving families in Sweden with food that has no hygeine regulation controls on it.
3. to lessen the degree of cruelty we inflict on the animals in the world.
4. to teach a lesson to all those armchair (vegetarian) critics.
Ah well, tradition is tradition!
"Wow, a lot of you have no idea about elk hunting in Sweden!"
Agreed
"The hunting companies/teams usually divide the meat ... sometimes the person who shot the elk gets a free lot...
The person who shoots the elk is always rewarded the heart and the head.
