Sweden looks to tackle immigrant women jobs challenge

The Swedish government on Monday announced a new inquiry aiming at finding ways to make it easier for immigrant women to enter the labour market.

Current numbers show that only a fifth of women originating from outside of Sweden are working within three years of moving to the country, which is an alarmingly low number, argues Sweden’s Minister for Integration, Erik Ullenhag.

The comparable figure for immigrant men is 50 percent after the same period of time.

The reason for the big difference is explained by a number of different factors, including a lower level of education, more domestic responsibility, less work experience, as well as the ability to claim parental leave benefits.

“One of the biggest integration and equality challenges today is to make sure immigrant women can be self sufficient,” Ullenhag said in a statement.

“As it is now many, of these women risk getting stuck in long-term unemployment and in a financially precarious situation.”

Researchers from the Expert group for public economics (Expertgruppen för studier i offentlig ekonomi) recently pointed out that parental leave benefits are a "woman-and-poverty trap" which can be used as a form of social welfare benefit for years.

People who come to Sweden with toddlers can get parental leave benefits even if the child is not an infant, and the grant is equivalent to what the parent would get if participating in Swedish language classes.

This might lead to women choosing to stay at home, with the effect that both the mother and her children learn Swedish at a slower pace.

“The recently implemented establishing reform has a clear equality focus,” Ullenhag said.

“But we need to do significantly more to give immigrant women power over their everyday lives through earning their own salary.”

I have a very easy solution:

Don't bring that huge amount of uneducated housewives to Sweden!

They spend ages learning just how to count, then stay home and get fatter by watching TV and eating cheap junk food that they bought using the unemployment aid.

I might sound harsh, but isn't this the truth with most uneducated immigrants?

Why not bring people from Eastern Europe or at least more educated people?
09:18 October 18, 2011 by Bazsy
You can not just "bring" people from Eastern Europe. They come if they want to come anyway (most of EE being in the EU by now). Maybe Sweden could advertise itself in EE so more ppl would want to come :)

But yes:

I came to Sweden from Eastern Europe, finished SFI in 5 months, and now speaking almost fluently after 9 months of being here. I'm on the way of getting a job which I plan to get before my first 12 months are over. This all without any welfare...

It all depends on which country the immigrants come from. I know many Thai women who are successfully working here in Sweden.

It just seems to be the Muslims who find it most difficult... probably got something to do with their outdated views on women in general.

Bottom line is Sweden should be more selective in its immigration.

"....as well as the ability to claim parental leave benefits."

It sounds like they have a job being a baby factory.
14:59 October 18, 2011 by Spoutcandy0702
Yes, you are right andersonking that, it all depends on which country the immigrants came from and how motivated and determined the immigrants to find work. There are smart and english speaking immigrants but can't get work right away because they have to study Swedish :-( even if the company applied for is a multi-national and would advertise the company uses English as a form of corporate communication, they still communicate in Swedish. So ??

If they really wanted to get more immigrant women to work then abolishing "barnbidraget" and "socialbidraget" seems like the most efficient option. With the total splintering of swedish society and "we" its gonna happen within 15 years anyway so way not do it sooner rather than later?

Whatever this gang of fools decide upon this time it will be just as ineffective as the "etableringsreformen" that was put into effect 1 dec 2010 and until now take credit for 222 employed immigrants at the cost of 1 billion SEK. My personal reflection on those figures is that the majority of those 222 would probably have found work anyway due to being energetic individuals.

why r people who come here with racial comment non swedes? seriously why wud think ur better than us? is it coz u got fair skin and blond hair and blue eyes?....most people criticise that these people r baby making factories, i know first hand experience what it is to be a muslim woman in the swedish society, it does not matter how much kompetence u have or university degree, matter of fact is u go to an employer and the first thing the judge is by the colour of ur clothes. i wud think that a person who is qualified to be a manager at a place wud have kompetence enough not to judge people by how they look but by their merits. but the reality is the opposite. i get so mad when non swedish people come here with their 2 cent english and think they r better than other immigrants....NEWS FLASH ur not aiigt!
19:12 October 18, 2011 by Svensksmith
NEWS FLASH, Islamist. I would not criticize anyone about 2 cents English if I were you.
19:50 October 18, 2011 by Aquos
@islamist....What you said has nothing to do with what people are commenting on! Nobody is criticizing immigrants because of skin color. You're completely off point by criticizing people's English (although if I had to correct yours, there would be loads to correct!). You are throwing accusations at everybody and not really thinking of why Swedes and other employers have that bad image of Muslim immigrants.
21:26 October 18, 2011 by jostein
@islamist

Well, then i take it you do not oppose abolishing "barnbidraget" and "socialbidraget"? Its good to find a person of likemind.

@ islamist

Try reading the book "Hooked on Phonics", your writing and choice of politica movement, oops, I mean, "religion of terrorist", have no place here.

Yes, I agree, the welfare system needs to go. These women will then be forced to work and pay taxes like 'normal prople' : )

Islamic- of or relating to or supporting Islam, a monotheistic religion characterized by the acceptance of the doctrine of submission to Allah and to Muhammad as the chief and last prophet of Allah.

Islamist- An Islamic revivalist movement, often characterized by moral conservatism, literalism, and the attempt to implement Islamic values in all spheres of life.

@Islamist,

Your user name is offensive and it is indicative of your lack of desire to integrate into Sweden. Attempts to implement Islamic values into Swedish life are not welcome.

Other than your rampant bigotry/stupdity, it is clear that none of you have anything productive to say on the topic. It is sad to see such a lack of compassion.

Having come here from the US with two graduate degrees (in Social Work and Management) and having been both a licensed therapist and director of a national non-profit I can say, integration is not as 'easy' as some of you would like to make it sound. There is a catch-22 in Sweden as pointed out by Spoutcandy0702. Few companies are willing to accept candidates for jobs if you don't speak Swedish fluently, even if you are perfectly qualified. As I have been told many times "It would put an undue burden on other employees"--nice.

Studying Swedish at SFI is in many ways a joke --if you choose evening classes it is only two days a week!!! At that pace it would take a decade to learn! Nearly all "English jobs" are in technology, sales, or finance, and in my experience through SFI nearly all immigrants to Sweden speak pretty decent English.

Finally, your mischaracterizations of who these women are is disgusting. You over simplify the case. I'd like to see your asses move to Guatemala or China and get a job not speaking a lick of Spanish or Chinese. THEN you can gripe and complain about 'immigrants'. There are so many simple public policy solutions to these problems --but ones Sweden is unwilling to face. Rather you all just love to bitch and moan about 'immigrants' rather than face the fact that Sweden has to adapt to be more accommodating to immigrants in the same way immigrants are working hard to adapt to Sweden.

So to try and get things back on topic here....I was just reading an article on "10 practical tips when you've moved to Sweden" (http://www.thelocal.se/followsweden/article/10-practical-tips-when-youve-moved-to-Sweden-/) and surprisingly enough Get a job, and Learn Swedish are far down the list. I'm a woman working in IT and I was planning to first Learn Swedish, then Find a job, THEN move to Sweden - will it even work that way?

It is a good idea to give qualified immigrent women a job than to bring a whole new immigrent family to fulfill that job requirement.

people are plain stupid these days,

most fools having a Lackadaisical attitude to life just jump up at anything islamic to enrich stupidity in the minds of innocent people. just plain calebian 22.

there is nothing wrong in being muslim but there is somthing daft in being calebian 22. i mean i aint no muslim but i dont like it when you insult people/women based on religion and expect to not get violence in return for your low IQ.

anyways point i wanted to make is that lets not incite religious hate, rather address the problems raised. its difficult to get a job without knowing swedish and SFI is a joke. SFI is just elementary swedish and thats not going to get a proffessioanl anywhere near the desk job.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand. How - or why - would a person move to another country and just live off their tax payers? I decided a while back that I want to move to another country, probably Sweden. You know what I did? I began learning the Swedish language and looked up the requirements for immigration. The very first requirement is that you have a job.

So when I hear of people getting free housing or not working for years after arriving, I am confused as to how they even got in the country. I suppose they came with a family member who does have a job, but it still seems so stupid that they would just sit around doing nothing. In fact, it reminds me of a lot of people here, and that's not a compliment!
