If Swedes are so anti-religion, including anti-Christian, why do you take Sunday and other traditionally Christian holiday's off? Hypocrisy … typically Swedish. I would like the ice mosque to cool down Islam in Sweden. Perhaps more than 1000 ice mosques will be needed and then, and only then, Sweden will become to what it was many decades ago. Wishful thinking.

If there's a church there already then why not let them build a mosque and attract more tourists with money?

They'd have to do something special if they're expecting people to take off their shoes, but that could be worked out. Also does migga's question in comment #6 about gender equality matter in this case? There are other mosques in Sweden that keep men and women apart without problem so I'm guessing that it may be protected under some freedom of religion law.

Tyrants like to use religions (superstition and sorcery and ostentatious display of religion) to extend their reign (ref. to Pisistratus of Athens) along with the use of brute violence and armed force. The rationale here is flawed. There are tons of American tourists that go to the Taj Mahal every year. Should you build a baptist church next to it? (Made of white marble?)

Islam moves ever northwards, establishing a cultural and political presence that no other foreign religion currently seeks. I don't understand why this pairing of an ice mosque with the traditional ice-church needs to happen - and if it does, then why Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism etc. are also not included in the equation of culturally relativistic pandering. Let people, tourists included, appreciate the local culture, traditions, religious heritage, whatever, without needing to transplant everything from home to appease people's feelings or make them feel included. It's as bad as those stupid British enclave towns in Spain. I love visiting foreign countries with foreign cultures, I wouldn't dream of imposing upon anyone to purpose build a house of worship for me. People of my particular culture have done the likes of this in the past however, and it's now remembered with disgust as 'the horrors of colonialism'.

If it does go ahead though, perhaps the shoe issue can be solved by allowing snow shoes with an ambiguous sign outside the mosque that says: 'SNO SHOES IN THE MOSQUE.

They could then make an ice-kiosk next door that says 'There's no Ice-pork, we just have Ice-lamb'. Those from the Ice-synagogue could also eat there, but they might have a hell-al of a time accepting that Ice-lamic meat preparation methods had doubtless been observed. When the Buddhist Ice-Stupa is finished they can make a vegetarian ice-hut that sells vegan frozen-fried-rice with frozen peas (non-violently picked and ever-so-gently snap frozen). I truly hope as the climax to all of this there is an ice-mead-hall bigger than all the other structures, where pagans can come and toast the ancient Nordic gods. If this doesn't happen some may feel very upset and violated. :(

When Christians want to worship they "have to" go to a church. It is not possible (or more really practical) to just drop to their knees and start praying.

I have worked with many Muslims who carry a prayer mat with them. When necessary (and that is several times a day) they excuse themselves, find a quiet room to lay down their mat and make their prayers. Job done!

So why is it so necessary to be "politically correct" to build a Mosque out of ice? How many Muslims would "need it" during their stay at the Ice Hotel anyway? I could well understand the desire to make a large Mosque as a permanent structure, presuming that there is a large population in the area who could be expected to use it (as with any religious structure). But, given that a physical structure would not seem necessary to practice the religion, what would be the point when it will melt back into the river each spring?

Great rational and thinking. Along those same lines, if someone wants to experience REAL muslim culture and religion, then travel to a real islamic country. It is really easy and cheap to fly. No need to experience some quasi-form of subtle of muslim colonialism.

If I travel to a foreign country to experience its culture like Japan for instance, I don't want to see a bunch of mexican restaurants and mariachi bands outside a buddhist temple. I don't go to a Japense restaurant and expect to be served by real japanese in traditional grab. Not some cuacasian or Filipino dressed to look like a japanese. This is NOT diversity.

I don't want to go to a Ice Church and hear some muzzein making a call to prayer at this ice mosque and fears that I am entering a "Sharia" zone nad have to empty out my hot toddy drink to comply. Multiculturalism is stealing my ethnicity and culture...or at least diluting it.

I will point out first I'm a totally atheist. But, if you want a good read for a few weeks, Bernard Lewis's 2000 years of middle east history is pretty good at giving you some background. I read it whilst working out there for while, it shows the birth of islam and it's impact through the centuries.

It's certainly the cleverist main stream religion so far, but being one of the last to be created the developer was able to learn from others mistakes. You take an existing religion which has had previous messenger, then create the last prophet, swearing there will be no more prophets, you then condemn all other non believers etc.. cunning plan to control the people me thinks, when your inspired messenger can't be replaced with another. Even when it came to Mosques, they knew they were up against it at Jerusalem, so they built a massive new mosque on what was then the high ground over looking the place, completely over shadowing any of the other faiths buildings, dominance? this is now one of their most holy places. All very good tactics for controlling and dominating the people. All created and developed from the thoughts of a few people!

In my view all religions are cults, some are just more popular than others. The world would be much more peaceful place without them. Plus, logically they can't all be correct in what they beleive, so logic says there is no religion.

I think if you ask a true moderate muslim, they would discourage the building of this mosque.

First it would be for more or less show purposes.

Any money spent on maintaining it should rather be sepent on maintaining a real mosque or if not then a real community center. If that is not the case just donate it to any other charity working for well being of humans (not just muslims)

The first mosque was made out of mud, and tree leaves. It was a community and learning center. All the grand mosquees were later built by people trying to stroke their egos.

This is crazy the government of Sweden reported that after 3 years only 50% of immigrant men and 1 in 5 immigrant women have jobs. Why should we invite them to build "ice mosques" in our nations we dont even need them.

educated western immigrants are a good thing though.

It is crazy how many churches there are in Sweden and no one attends. It would be nice to see a Mosque built, as least there will be people using it.
