'40 years of dictatorship over': Reinfeldt

Published: 20 Oct 11 16:23 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/36870/20111020/

Following the news of Muammar Qaddafi's capture by Libyan rebel forces on Thursday, several Swedish politicians have welcomed the demise of the Qaddafi regime.

“Forty years of dictatorship are over. Now we can build a new Libya,” said Swedish prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on Thursday to daily Dagens Nyheter (DN).

The news of the ousted leader's capture broke during the day, and was quickly followed by reports that he had been killed in the scuffle.

The Libyan opposition later confirmed that their soldiers had seen Qaddafi's dead body.

Although Fredrik Reinfeldt had been hoping for a trial, where Qaddafi had been held accountable for his crimes, he told DN the most important thing was that he had been found.

“This is a victory for the Libyan people and a victory for all the Swedes that have participated in making it happen,” he said.

Foreign minister Carl Bildt was quick to comment on the capture of the former leader of Libya, tweeting about the capture shortly after the news broke.

However, he too had been hoping for a trial for the ousted leader.

“I would prefer it if he was alive so that he could be tried in court and held accountable for his crimes,“ Bildt told daily Expressen.

The Social Democrat spokesperson on foreign affairs, Urban Ahlin, agreed that a trial could have made public the offences committed by the former Libyan leader.

"It is important that the offences of a dictator are made known, that people get to know, it is vital for the rebuilding of the country," said Ahlin to DN.

According to Ahlin, difficult times lie ahead for the Libyan people.

"We know how hard it can be to organise a democatization process. But it is a good starting point," he said.

Shabal Elgale, spokesperson for the Libyan opposition in Sweden was overjoyed with the news that the regime had fallen.

“This is a great victory for the Libyan people, for the Libyan nation. After 42 years, the country is finally liberated,” he said to newspaper Expressen on hearing the news.

Elgale told the paper that he had already spoken to people at home in Libya and that the party has already started there.

“It is a great feeling. They are very happy and are out celebrating victory. This is a big day, “ he said.

Prime minister Reinfeldt was pleased to be able to say that Sweden had participated in the liberation of the Libyan people.

“I am very proud to see that the Swedish efforts have played their part, we have participated in making a difference,” Reinfeldt said,

Europeans leaders are just a gang of hypocritical savages. I just can't understand how this shameless celebration of a murder can fit in their human rights rhetoric.
23:03 October 20, 2011 by apelsin000
Just need to point out that... they are not "Libyan opposition" anymore... but oppositions...

I wonder when will NATO go and help free people from dictatorships in China, North Korea, Venezeula, Eritheria and etc.

Euro leaders are a bunch of thugs and nothing more than that.
23:55 October 20, 2011 by nyag
I truely don't understand the so called uprising, revolution and war against terror its all alias for "we kill all those who stand in our way",,,,

I agree with Vitas, yet another country and its legacy destroyed by some other power hungry and money greedy politician,,,,

Whenever there is an uprising and a topple of a leader, USA is the first to scream "war crimes"... My question is why isn't Bush behind bars for what he did to Iraq?? Why isn't some Israeli leader behind bars for what they did to the Palestine nation???

Its a shame that the European leaders are hand puppets of USA and Israel... They shamelessly dance to their tunes... Wake up and grow a pair...

USA should clean its own mess before being the boss to other countries...they should have a "war on child abuse" "war on debt" "war on unemployment" "war on obesity" before having a "war of terror"

As a means of freeing Libya from Gaddafi, how many innocent lives were destroyed in the last 6 months? How many houses were destructed? How many human rights violations were committed?

so yaaaaaaaa Libya!! welcome to the club!
00:42 October 21, 2011 by apelsin000
really isn't everyone agree with PM Reinfeldt? surprising! I agree with him.

""I would prefer it if he was alive so that he could be tried in court and held accountable for his crimes," Bildt told daily Expressen."

Yep, he would have gotten at least 14 difficult months behind bars.

Why doesnt the local show the savagery of people carrying his body around in a parade?

He should have been brough to trial, but it just shows what kind of people will lead Libia, a bunch of vultures and savages that were already fighting eachother for power before ghadafis death .

How can the world media show the video of libians parading with a dead body and not condem the savagery in it?

sure the guy diserved to get his head blown off, but that really isnt how you rebuild a country and start fresh. Just goes to show how much of a bs this whole arab spring is.

Now more than ever people been cleansing minoritis in egypt and irak it will get alot worse before it gets better specially when the kind of people fighting for freedom are the kind of people capable of parading with a corpse and celebrate.

@apelsin000 I would assume we have evolved a little bit since then.

And since people have been condemning usa for shooting its enemies they should condemn Libyans for parading with a corpse.

my comment was mostly about the videos i saw on cnn and euronews, and im actually not disturbed about them , im more disturbed at how no one is disturbed by them.

Shouldn't we be disturbed by those things?

"you are just disturbed" as if its im the abnormal one for thinking parading a corpse shouldnt be seen as ok...?!

I guess well see what happens after all this sugarcoated freedom fighting, the funny thing is when people rebel against dictatorship its freedom, but when people protest against banks they are hippies and get beaten up lol
09:44 October 21, 2011 by nyag
I am not sure why CNN keeps broadcasting such graphic images repeatedly... Yes he was a dictator but the man was a proud leader it was a shame that he was killed and dragged around like a dog, no human being should be treated like this... even Bin Laden was spared this shame why didn't this man. I am not a fan of Gaddafi but I am not a barbarian either. The people of Libya have anger towards Gaddafi but what is the grudge that the news media hold against him.

You can show one snapshot of his corpse and period...

NOw they are out with Gaddafi now we can all fight for the massive supply of oil.. maybe as a gratitude they will supply free oil to France and USA... yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa mission accomplished

I guess I am just not very sorry to see die the man who promoted the following anti-European genocidal hate speech:

"There are signs that Allah will grant Islam victory in Europe - without swords, without guns, without conquests. The 50 million Muslims of Europe will turn it into a Muslim continent within a few decades." --Muammar al-Gaddafi, 2006

Unfortunately this evil hate ideology does not die with him, it grows and perpetuates with Muslims everywhere.
10:51 October 21, 2011 by Vitas
jvtx3232: Where is anti-European genocidal in that speech? It is true! Go to Rinkeby station in Stockholm and look around - who is responsible for that? Gaddafi or swedish politics?

Hate speech? Better look on that http://www.thelocal.se/36866/20111020/

You are looking for european enemis too far - a lof of them are here - in Riksdag.

This fighting for democraty is funny for me after I was in Burma. There is real dictatorship. Or North Korea. Who is going to help them? No,no, no - there is not oil!

I assume those critical of Qaddafi's mode of death, couldn't find room for criticism of the mode of execution of his tens of thousdands of victims.

Here's one for you to think about. Abdulhakim Khaditha al-Kabir, a bee keeper and father of three was arrested in September for breaking a curfew while on his way home from tending his hives. He was put in a small cell with 150 other people who made do with one bottle of water every three days - between them all. He was killed when Qaddafi's men threw hand grenades into the cell, and then machine gunned the survivors; on orders of one of Qaddafi's repugnant sons. His body was burned.

There you go guys, now you have just one awful murder committed on behalf of Qaddafi to rant about. There are tens of thousands more, going back over 40 years. I expect to read your comments expressing your outrage, written with at least an equal level of condemnation to that in your above your above posts. If I don't, I'll just have to assume you think it's OK for poor Abdulhakim Khaditha al-Kabir to meet his end in such a ghastly way, but not OK for Qadaffi.

I am afraid we have traded the 'Devil We Know for the 'Devil We Don't Know.' At this point it looks like whomever replaces him will have strong ties to Al Qaeda.
17:07 October 21, 2011 by AHA
Libya will fall apart just like Iraq. Pity he was killed before standing a trial that would have exposed many a European and American polititian. Maybe the Arabs are people that need a dictator to lead them.
19:06 October 21, 2011 by nyag
@AHA

Maybe that is the reason that he was killed.... Those who REALLY have suffered in the hands of Gaddhafi wanted closure, wanted to know answers to many questions, but now no one will ever know.....

Whole thing is so mysterious, H.Clinton travels to Tripoli and says catch him "dead or alive" within 2 days they catch him ALIVE and the shot him DEAD... It was brutal the way they were treating him... talk about sucker punching....

He is bad, but we dont need to have in the face coverage of the brutality of his death.

I wonder how many of those who express regret over gaddafi's death have ever lived in a country like Libya. There is no free media, no independent justice system, everything in universities are dictated from above, country's wealth is spent on stupid wars and wishes and whims of the "highly wonderful supreme leader" who is God's representative on earth. Every aspect of economy is controlled by smart "Seif ol islams" of the dictator in addition to 30% unemployment. Turkey with no oil reserves gains power and becomes richer while under "smart leaders" leadership your country becomes poorer and poorer.

Libyans and Nato did a great Job, and Gaddafi would have had the same end as "Ceaușescu" if he was offered the luxury of a trial.

And by the way, no country hands out free crude oil to another country. Oil price is known for everybody; However those countries who sided with Gaddafi shouldn't expect special treatment from the new government.

@nyag

What's so mysterious? Minutes after a gun battle, heavily-armed, heavily hyped-up fighters get hold of a man responsible for thousands of atrocities, some of them to the relatives of said heavily armed men. In a lethal combination of rage, revenge and combat stress, someone shoots the evil little worm through the head before he can be passed on up the chain of command to calmer souls.

Personally, I would have been more suprised if he hadn't been excecuted in those first few extremely dangerous (for him) minutes. Put your conspiracy theories to bed on that one.

Great steps but we have to extremely careful about imposing harsh judgment without giving the suspects benefits of doubts, if there is any and honestly show the evidences before the World, so that these blind heads will follow the upcoming trend of peaceful surrendering of power to be set, beginning with Syrian ruler-ship.

It must be a fool who pulled the trigger that killed Gaddafi but the advisers were surely terrorist-minded Libyans: the 'wanna be heads of power'-freedom fighting guys, who eventually, at least on a very personal level will face same or similar justice either by the CC (cosmic Creator) or indirectly through other creations. Examples are in the historical events of all killed (internal or external suffering ended) or still alive but suffering from conscience (Protected by man-made laws) leaders starting from the East to West (e.g. India to US).

If 'we-the good part of the West' could become fast enough to already declare amnesty for Gaddafi, then we could bring the leadership-hungry bad Libyans under justice now and donate Gaddafi's oil-money to secured UN funds to peacefully remove many bad ruler-ships and convince the world how great is the West.

However, we shall still have more opportunities in the near future, therefore, no-one to be blamed, as ultimate reality is at the whim of playful Cosmic Creator beyond human understanding or judgment of being right and wrong.

But the creations that become killer of other creations shall not be spared of crimes of direct killings; and the game of "Bacteria and Anti-Bacteria @ 50% rule" to be continued forever.

Now what will be happening is: Libyan cruel guys will start fighting or killing each-other soon and then, when we honestly will help the isolated portions of the Global Public to non-violently get rid of fake Tigers, our role will be silently noticed and welcome with wide open arms not only in some Countries but in a few Continents.

The reason why Gaddafi needed to be overthrown was because he was treating his people wrongly,ill-treating his prisoner and oppressing his citizens.. but the pictures that are emerging via media, shows no difference between these so called freedom fighters and Gaddafi.

When Gaddafi took power in 1969, he did it without sheding blood, but what happened now???

How many of Libyans were killed?? what was these people's mistake? They supported Gaddafi... they don't even want to give the man their leader for 42 years not decent but religious burial. Isn't the new Government oppressing those who loved and admired Gaddafi??? Who is going to defend the freedom of opinion and speech of pro Gaddafi Libyans???

The news media has done it once again to just broadcast what they wanted the viewers to believe and feel...They did it with Iraq, they did this with Sri Lanka... but why are they not exposing the oppression and discrimination done by USA and Israel???

Who made the US king of the world? When will Bush be prosecuted for the War crimes he did in Iraq?

When will the Israelis be questioned for what they are doing in Gaza??

Dictator or not, you execute him or not, stop flashing such graphic images repeatedly on tv, websites and newspapers...

We get it he is dead!
00:25 October 23, 2011 by Uncle
nyag

Purely statistically, Israelis are "guilty" of 0,5% of all killed muslims in the middle east and africa in the past 50 years.

The movie of a muslim who killed thousands of other muslims in bigger amounts than Israelis did in 60 years of existence of Israel in just half a year is all over the internet. Also, the way he screams "Haram" by calling to their religious mercy and getting a bullets instead is a wonderful picture of the "peaceful" Islam. Also the happy and laughing faces of those who come to take a pic of his bloody corpse is a clear vision of the religion of death.

That is why they show it on TV, you dummy. Not to show that he is dead, but to show the laughing "good" muslims who beat, slap and shoot a 70 y/o guy while he is calling to Islamic law. Media wants to showe the teeth of you - predators, who will not rest until you submit the entire world to your barbaric and medieval philosophy that you have the guts to call religion, whether by word or by fire.

It wants to show your sense of VENDETTA, lack of mercy, emotionless strive for blood. How you rip a body of an enemy like hyenas - while barking and hitting each other in order to get to the meaty peaces.

The violent, half crazy Gaddafi and his death are a SYMBOL for everything you represent. And rightly so.

After reading the kind of death of Muammar Kaddafi, we can clearly see that the so-called new Lybia will be in the hands of savages and ruled by a government composed of savages with the sanction of savages such as Obama, Sarkozy, Cameron and the blessing of Sweden.

It is true that Kaddafi was a sort of a savage himself who for 42 years ruled a country composed by savages, but, he certainly did not deserve to be executed the way he was and certainly he did not deserve to be exhibited like an animal in a butcher's house.

Good for the NATO and all the savages inside of this organization. With their so-called protecting Lybians lives, they showed that they were protecting only a bunch of savages and canibals looking for blood.

Here is what I posted to Yahoo-news Re: Saif, if you'd like to read.

: Saif Gaddafi surely deserves a fair trial by the ICC in a very transparent way and hereditary leader-ship should be banned by immediate implementation of new ICC laws (need to be made and passed unquestionably ASAP) so that for the sake of facilitating non-risky and healthy United Nation's new Global politics; Sons and Daughters, regardless qualified or not, of proved greedy, unwise, bad leaders can never ever participate, as heirs apparent, in the continuation of political power handling again, under any circumstances.

Many lands of belief-blind public have got themselves confined in suffocating grips of childrens of bad leaders with "no way out" for decades after decades (e.g. Assad of Syria and too many others to become notice-able soon but for now "attitude of Amnesty' will work fine.

Mosquitoes have killed millions of humans but can we catch and kill a actual killer: mosquito? Cosmic power through inferior class creations, such as wild animals can kill other creations including humans but humans-gifted with conscience cannot or shouldn't kill other humans including killers (suspended death sentence with a condition of fighting wars against terrorists world-wide, when needed) for any reasons, instead, place them inside hard-labor camps to produce or earn their own food.

Human Rights and freedom is not applicable to other humans' Right violators: the killers of humans and innocence.

-Laws under new impartial UN power should be that simple with no arguments entertained.
