Swede given licence to kill 'feisty' squirrel

A Stockholm man has gained clearance from the local authorities to kill a squirrel which it is claimed has been terrorizing the leafy suburb of Enskede, according to a report in the Expressen daily.

According to the application submitted to the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen), the squirrel is a particularly feisty animal, having entered the house on a number of occasions, leaving behind it a trail of destruction.

After having reviewed the case for two full months, the County Administrative Board has taken its decision and the beast might soon have cracked its last nut, if the police decide to allow the Enskede resident permission to go in for the kill.

The costs for disposing of the squirrel will however be borne by the man, should he succeed with his operation.

Jonas Wahlström, head of the Skansen aquarium in Stockholm, is among those who argue that this drawn out process to ponder the fate of an animal weighing in at 300 grammes, is a little exaggerated, and cruel.

“Just put up a small budgie cage in a tree, put in some squirrel food and open the cage up,” Wahlström told Expressen.

“The grateful squirrel will then naturally climb inside and start to munch on the food. Through a long thread attached to the opening of the cage you can then close the gate. Then you just take it away.”

. . . then with the squirrel in the cage, you throw the cage in the lake!

:S man, seriously!!! its a squirrel for god's sake.. how difficult is it gonna be to catch it and leave it out in the woods ?
13:59 October 29, 2011 by Mb 65
Catch it in a trap a drive miles away and let it go. Why is it that the solution is to kill everything.

Perhaps if it wasn't searching for food it wouldn't enter the house. Put some food out (they absolutely love sunflower seeds) some many metres from your home. If it still persists in being 'feisty', then use the cage system. It will have got used to getting food so won't be so reluctant to get in the cage for the food.

It would really be good is some way of co-habiting could be the end result - they are incredible entertainers in the winter when they come for solrosfro.

I just loved the word 'terrorizing'..is it an 'Al quaeda grey' or an 'afghanistani red'?

Killing a rat with a bushy tail is a no brainer. Squirrels are pests. Anyone who has ever had a squirrel get into their attic or walls knows the devastion these little bastards can havoc.
15:27 October 29, 2011 by duncs
it's probably an immigrant squirrel. perhaps they can deport it?
18:30 October 29, 2011 by karex
muscle, MB 65& Keith: agree. Killing should only be the solution for rabid or otherwise dangerous animals. Yes squirels can be pests. And yes, I have had them in my attic. But you don't have to resort to murder to solve every problem. We are suppsoed to be the intelligent species here, so why are we so lazy to use our brains?

Need a license to kill a squirrel..

Need to pay for disposing it...

Really? Is that what Sweden is about? It should be anybody's base right to get rid of rodents terrorizing their property. You should not need any license or approval for that. Shoot it and burry it in the backyard. No need to pay for "disposal".

Sometimes it feels like Sweden is living so far in the past it's hard to grasp.

I love them little creatures. I feed them and always carry nuts in my pockets. They are really cute. The snooty bastard in Enskede should be hung by his nuts!!!!

Why did he wait months to get permission to kill it? Just catch and release elsewhere... would have been done in a few hours....

Get a dog! The dog may need a license, but not to kill a squirrel.

And the dog will have a great time and a good feed!
