6,000 pre-school kids hurt each year: report

Over 19,000 children attending pre-schools in Sweden 2008-2010 were injured so badly that they required emergency care, according to National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) figures.

The figures have been compiled by TV4 investigative reporting programme Kalla Fakta and Swedish authorities have described them as "alarming".

The most common cause of injury is falls, but there are also a large number of crushing and cutting injuries.

Furthermore the number of accidents reported at Swedish pre-schools would appear to be increasing.

In 2009 5,900 accidents occurred, which required treatment at a hospital emergency department. Since then, the numbers have increased steadily.

Figures from the National Agency for Education (Skolverket) show that groups are expanding within daycare providers, with 18 percent consisting of 21 or more children.

This can be compared with 2003 when the figure was 15 percent.

Staffing levels have at the same time declined. In 2006 there was an average of 5.1 children per pre-school staff member, compared to 5.4 in autumn 2010.

"Of course, group sizes and staffing levels have an impact on the safety of children in pre-school. The staff have a huge responsibility for children within the operation," said Ingegerd Johansson at the National Agency for Education.

According to Johansson's colleague Carina Hall, the trend towards increasingly large groups of pre-school children is "alarming" because group sizes and make up are a defining characteristic of quality.

This shocks me. I am from America and a childs care in school or daycare is of the utmost importance. Since moving to Sweden I have heard so many horror stories of teachers, camp consulers and day care providers being complete morons with a total lack of patience allowing many kids to be bullied (no wonder Sweden has so many people with mental issues) and injured kids to be ignored because it's more convienant for the adult. Is there no pride in being a teacher in Sweden? Just another easy paycheck? For shame.

While the statistics are alarming and require thorough investigation to ensure the welfare of the children; claiming that Sweden has so many people with mental issues is ridiculous and not pertinent to the story above. There has been numerous instances in the United States where individuals who have been let down by the system including teachers, who go on to retaliate and shoot their classmates or commit suicide (Consider Jamey Rodemeyer). Every country has their issues including your own.

You are right. All Swedes are bullies and have mental issues. Hardly any children survive their education here.

You must leave Sweden immediately and return at once to the US, where you will be safe.

We will all miss reading your posts here on The Local forums, but that is the price we must pay for your safety. On behalf of The Local forum community, I wish you a hearty bon voyage. Don't waste your time posting your thanks, or indeed anything else here again. Taxi for GeoC!

I tried to stay away from that kind of answer, but you have really articulated my initial reaction to such an inane post.

I am a Pre School teacher and we do our best to protect the children, but they are children, they fall,they run,they run into things,they pusheachother they fall on eachother they are small, they are little people with no idea or perceptions yet of being hurt. It can be a very difficult job at time actually and with alot of responsibility and GeoC it is not a easy paycheck at all and the money isnt great either. You think they would pay more as we are looking after peoples children day in and day out, so people should think about that more.

GeoC please go back to America where your education system is so much better.. ;)

@GeoC:

Many Swedes with mental issues? What about US? The country where you find the recommendation "not suitable for pets" in any microwave's instruction manual.

And I do not have any conflict of interest: I'm not from Sweden.

I can imagin the pile of responsibilities on pre-school teachers in taking care of children.

@GeoC

Sweden is the only best place on this planet where small children are well taken care of !!! Why did you come to Sweden.........

One of the great things about Sweden is the fact they let kids be kids.

Other western countries are so pre occupied with litigation that they end up wrapping their kids in cotton wool so as to avoid any litigation when one of life's accidents happen.

This in effect breeds overweight neurotic unconfident adults.
