Confidence in Juholt falls further: poll

Only 12 percent of Swedes have confidence in Social Democrat head Håkan Juholt, according to a new poll showing that support for the party is continuing to dwindle.

“We are taking this very seriously,” party secretary Carin Jämtin told daily Expressen.

In the wake of party leader Håkan Juholt's accommodation subsidies scandal and internal squabbles about the shadow budget, the party has had a tough start to the autumn.

In the latest poll from research company Demoskop, the Social Democrats only received support from 26.6 percent of voters, the worst result the party has ever received in the history of Demoskop polls.

According to survey, the support for the Social Democrats continues to be weak in the large cities and among professionals.

“The great task at hand was to regain ground among these, which just hasn’t happened. Instead they have lost support among other groups, especially women and young voters,” Demoskop CEO Anders Lindholm told daily Expressen.

Confidence in the Social Democrat party head is also at an all-time low, with only 12 percent of respondents indicating they believe in the abilities of Håkan Juholt.

Among white collar professionals, the result was even lower, at 10 percent.

As a comparison, former Social Democrat head Mona Sahlin’s worst result was a 20 percent confidence rating

Meanwhile, 58 percent of those surveyed said they had confidence in current prime minister and leader of the Moderate party, Fredrik Reinfeldt.

Lately Juholt has been touring the country trying to combat the lack of confidence following the last few months’ turbulence.

“It is going to take time to regain the confidence. People want to meet our party chairman and discuss matters with him,” Jämtin told the paper.

Despite the Social Democrats’ bad result, the opposition parties' combined 45.9 percent support nevertheless managed to close the gap with the centre-right government Alliance parties, which received combined support of 46.6 percent.

Here's a suggestion, Social Democrats: Fire Demoskop.

Another suggestion: Change the party system so that lifelong party apparatchiks don't get moved up the ladder to the party's top posts based on time in service. Try this instead: Implement a primary election system and then raise money to spend in general elections on competent politicians who campaign, govern and represent the party brand well. A political party must first sell itself to its base before selling to the broader electorate. The Social Democrats can't make the first sale.

Juholt exemplifies the lifelong party apparatchick who's never held a real job and knows squat about how the private sector works. Reinfeldt appears to have a clue about how things work outside of government and could hold his own working in the private sector. This puts him light years ahead of Juholt in my book.

The man is a walking tragedy a parody of political corruption leading a party that once put people before profit first; very sad and very dangerous!

At least he's not profiting from genocide in Africa, tearing apart the welfare state or killing the old and sick as a result of cutbacks in health spending. I don't particularly like Juholt but anything he's done wrong is nothing compared to what the Alliance are inflicting upon Sweden every single day.

eah well if the Social Democrats ever want to get into power again they had better start representing ordinary people and stop protecting privatisation, unregulated financial transactions and diminished workers rights. The buch stops with them and their corrupt leadership - the other crowd are merely crooks dressed up in lies the social democrats have managed to position themselves as crooks dressed up in empty and meaningless rhetoric.

Couldn't agree more conboy. Noone should delude themselves into thinking everything will be great again with the Social Democrats back in power - probably the best we can hope for is that the pace at which the welfare state is being dismantled and workers' rights undermined will slow down a bit compared to under the Alliance. It took decades of hard struggle by ordinary working people to build up the welfare state and win their most basic social rights and that's what it will take again if we're going to make the politicians of all parties take notice and force them into changing things for the better.
